About this property

Stunning Log home in the true "Heart" of Wisconsin.

Come enjoy a stunning, handcrafted log home, situated on well stocked, 63 acre semi-private lake. Although the official description is “cabin”, visitors invariably claim “Cabin? That is no cabin!”

While nestled in a large stand of red pines and birch trees, the girth of the cabin logs outsize the trees surrounding it. Visitors are immediately wooed onto the wrap-around deck providing a great perch to view the 400+ feet of shoreline. When you first enter the home you will be awed by the craftsmanship; from the log work in the 24 ft. high vaulted ceiling, to the local fieldstone fireplace. The antiques and cabin themed décor is just the icing on the cake.

our rate is based on 6 guests, but we allow up to 10. Additional fees apply for each guest over 6.

IInside you will find one bedroom on each of the three floors, providing a bit of solitude for each. The basement bedroom is decorated in the manner of old logging camps typical of the area. A handmade, reclaimed barnwood bunk bed is outfitted with new mattresses and can fit adults or children. Also in that room is a full sized sleigh bed. The room adjoins a well-appointed bathroom with a large shower and cozy woodland feel.

The main floor has an Eastern facing bedroom welcoming great sunrises over the lake. A walkout sliding door gives secluded, quiet access to the wrap around deck. The vaulted ceiling and fan, and two extra windows, allow sleeper to control the airflow in a myriad of ways. The bedroom is joined to the second full bath, with a vintage claw footed tub and reclaimed needle work art from area antique stores.

The loft bedroom is accessed by a lovely log stairwell. The view is stunning and the square footage impressive. The ½ bath provides a private place to get ready and for convenient restroom needs.

Besides these bedrooms, there is a hide-a-bed couch in the basement, and plenty of room for an extra air mattress. All together the house sleeps 10 people in beds (or hide-a-beds). Bring your own air mattress and linens if you require more sleeping arrangements. The main living area has plenty of seating (including around the dining table) and extra chairs are scattered around the home for use as well.

The owner can provide lots of ideas of things to do, but the local area supports hunters of all types, fishermen, snowmobilers, hikers, cross country skiers, antique hounds, and people who enjoy central Wisconsin in general. Day trip ideas will be provided in a separate excursion description. The lake is a private lake, but you can launch a boat with 10 hp max engine on a shared access across the lake.

Feel free to bring kayaks, canoes or paddle boats as well. The dock is outfitted with boat bumpers, a bench and a ladder for swimmers.

Our house is the only rental in the neighborhood. All of the residents are hard working folks and they aren't always happy when guests get a little rambunctious. Fireworks, music piped outside, drones, F'Bomb balloon fights, GUNS, blow up dolls....you have no idea. If you were looking to bust loose and have a "rambunctious" stay I might suggest you look for someplace a little more remote or in the heart of a vacation town. Ours is a quiet nights and working families raising-kids kind of neighborhood. You'll have a serene stay at our house and the neighbors appreciate this way.

This property has one security camera mounted on the garage recording only the driveway and front door.

Overall the property was as described. It was however, a little more dated than we expected. We had to deal with multiple mice in the kitchen area throughout our stay including keeping all non-refrigerated food in Tupperware bins. To the owners credit, they made us aware of the issue and offered assistance which was appreciated. The property and lake setting were beautiful. The views from the porch were exactly what we had hoped for. It’s a very quiet neighborhood which we also appreciated. Overall we would not likely return as the home was not our style and the owner communication and extensive rules focused on being an “ideal renter” and compliance with the 17 page PDF rule book, rather than how they can best serve their guests. It was also concerning to have the owner text during our stay, letting us know that they were watching our coming and going on the security camera and how we should be more focused on text communication with them. If you, like me, unplug from electronics during vacation, focusing on the people you are with and desire solitude, not surveillance, this review may be helpful to you.

Cozy Fall Stay

This was the perfect place to stay for our trip to our hometown for our 30 year high school reunion. The cabin is clean, cozy, and comfortable. The neighborhood is beautiful and peaceful. The fall colors were spectacular this time of year, and the cabin was even decorated for fall. Most of all, our hosts were incredibly kind and accommodating when we needed to check in a few days early as we were evacuating from a hurricane in Florida. The whole experience made us seriously consider moving back home!

Very clean, well taken care of property. We brought two boats with permission from owner and used them every day despite tons of rain. No boat landing but there was access across the lake to carry boats into water. No wake which made for a very peaceful and enjoyable experience. The fishing was wonderful- bass, pike, and bluegill. The dock access was handy. There is a steady down hill slope to walk from cabin to dock, but trail is well established. We were unable to swim due to weather, but kids really wanted to try out that raft. We did however catch several bass around it and the dock. We cooked many meals. The kitchen is well stocked as noted! Many antique and fragile items throughout the house. Bathrooms had all the essentials including plenty of towels. Bedrooms are spacious, all but the main bedroom beds could use a mattress topper as they were quite firm. Plenty of pillows and blankets. You do have to pay for your own fire wood if used - 5 per basket full. They do however supply propane for the grill. Easy access to property. Communication with owner was prompt and really appreciated the timeliness. We were able to check in early which was also much appreciated. Overall enjoyed our annual cabin trip stay here!

Great cabin

The cabin was in great condition and really nice. Very spacious. We were there in the winter so I can’t comment on the fishing or the huge deck but I’m sure it’ll be great in the summer.

Fun and comfortable

My extended family had a great time staying in this beautiful log home. It was clean and comfortable, and everything we needed was available. The back deck with a view of the lake was a great place to sit and drink coffee and chat. We particularly enjoyed the decor - wherever we looked we saw something new and interesting!

Family fun and relaxation

This home is beautiful and was the perfect spot for my family to spend a few days together creating memories. There was plenty to do, fishing, bird watching, and games for a rainy day. We brought our kayaks with us and enjoyed paddling around the very clean lake. This was my first VRBO experience, the bar has been set high.

The house was amazing! Large open layout, but very cozy for our family of 8. The home is meticulously decorated and so comfortable, plenty of room to spread out. The lake was a big hit for 4 boys who swam off the dock everyday. The huge wraparound deck

Stunning Property and Awesome Owners

Spent 3 nights at this amazing home. Stayed for snowmobiling trip. House had ample parking for our trucks and trailers. House is in a little sub division so one needs to be respectful of neighbors coming and going on noisy snowmobiles Owners were very friendly and communication was top notch. Would stay there again for sure

Better than expected

The cabin, the property, and the lake (especially if you want a quiet lake for kayaking or paddleboarding) were all above-board. I was impressed by how well the kitchen, bar, and linens were stocked. The property flows well for spending time with groups of people, and there is sufficient privacy to have fun without worrying about bothering the neighbors. Would stay here again.

I cannot say enough about the host also. She was was very responsive to my questions, and a very nice and personable person. This place would be my choice for future stays .

Nothing but wonderful things to say

This is a lovely vacation home and a great place to stay! Not only is it clean and well stocked but it is also beautifully decorated and in a gorgeous setting. Further, I found the owners of the home to be accommodating and easy to work with. If you are looking for a great place to stay in the north woods of Wisconsin, stop looking. This is it!

What a charming and comfortable place to stay in Northern Wisconsin!

This place is great. Super clean, which is really important to us, and a place that you can really make yourself at home. As soon as we walked in, we knew that we would make all of our meals at the house. We wanted to spend as much time as possible at the cabin in between kayaking and hiking. My husband and I stayed there by ourselves, because we really wanted to spread out. The house would be roomy for a large family vacationing as well. The location is central to tons of great recreation activities, and the owner was a pleasure to work with. If you are ever in the area of Medford, your must stay here!

Wonderful cabin, amazing layout!

We had 6 adults stay from Thursday-Sunday at this lovely lake home. There was so much to do, both inside and out! The lake is by far the best swimming lake I have ever been in! The water temperature was so mild, you could stay in there for hours! Plus the water was so clear – you could see the bottom of the lake nearly anywhere! We did a bit of fishing and had great luck with sunfish and bass. You could easily cast and catch right from the dock. The fire-pit is wonderful. We even had a doe and 2 fawns cross through the water right behind us one evening while sitting around the fire. The wrap-around deck has to be one of the best features of this home. You could sit outside all day and enjoy the view of the lake. The home is well-appointed and you do not want for anything when staying here. We will definitely be back!

The most wonderful place!

I can’t even begin to describe how wonderful this place is. Book it. Don’t hesitate. You will be wowed upon turning into the driveway and it just gets better from there. We are already booking our return visit. Some things worth mentioning: even though the pictures don’t show it, there is a great swim platform off the dock in the lake. My kids loved swimming there. Also, the shallow stream next to the dock is a spawning ground for Blue Gill. My kids loved watching the fish guard their eggs. You can hear loons during the day even though we never saw one. The frogs have a funny sound too. The deck was one of our favorite places to sit under the umbrella and listen to the quiet of nature. As another reviewer mentioned the walk to the dock can be steep so be careful if you aren’t sure footed. The kitchen is the best-stocked kitchen I’ve come across. We cooked all of our meals in-house and never needed for something we couldn’t find. The beds are comfortable and everyone slept well. Note: the Queen bed is the one in the loft; the others are full size. The lake is too small to really put your boat in, but nearby Esadore lake has a nice public access point. We caught a number of fish there. Esadore has hours for wake from 11-4 daily so you can tube, jet ski, etc. Lake Romeo is great for kayaking and canoeing. We rented from Dan at Silent Glide. Highly recommend. Just rent already! You’ll be glad you did.

Great Place for Family fun Vacation!!

Beautiful setting on Lake Romeo. Cabin is spacious with plenty of room for all. Well appointed as far as kitchen utensils, appliances, and plenty of extras like fans, tons of towels, lawn chairs, etc. The property owner of this place is more than helpful, she is quite responsive and happily answered all of our questions as well as adding helpful tips and a recommendation for lunch. Cleanliness of the house is excellent, you can also tell the house is well maintained and kept in tip top condition. There is plenty of space for all with the layout of this house. There is a large table dining area as well as the wet bar area in the basement so you don't feel crowded. There is 3 bathrooms, just keep in mind there is only 1 shower, not a big deal for us as we only had 5 adults. The lake is stocked with hungry fish, we caught fish every day that we tried and with just about every bait that we used. Rain shine or wind the fish were biting, lots of fun. The little gills around the dock were surprisingly tame, you can literally put your hand in the water and they will slowly come up and check it out, quite amazing! Also should mention the lake is very serene and peaceful it is private and there is no more than a dozen homes all the way around. Paddle boarding and trolling around the lake in our little 14' boat was very relaxing and enjoyable. Overall this house is great value, both as far as price and quality, and as a great place for a relaxing getaway. I do have a few observations that some people should be aware. From the house to the lake is a short walk down a slope, however the walk back up is steeper than you realize on the way down. It may be a bit too much if you have heart problems or are somehow disabled. Keep this in mind. Also at the time of this review there is no boat or canoe included with the rental. There is a rental place that delivers called the Silent Glide, he is very helpful and great value but it is an added cost to keep in mind. If you bring a boat, the boat landing is an adventurous one, I'd say be sure you have 4 wheel drive as it's a steep drop down and basically natural brush, no pavement or gravel. None of these observations is meant to be negative, but I feel they are important considerations for prospective vacationers. I would definitely consider booking here again. We had a great time and between the serenity, the wildlife, and the house itself, the whole trip was well worth the money spent.

About the host

Hosted by Krista Ruhnke

Host profile image
Phillip and Krista have been married for 35 years and purchased this unbelievable land in 1989. The home was meant to be the primary home for them and was built by a local man (who owns his own such home in the area to this day.) When Tombstone Pizza closed their headquarter in Medford, Krista lost her job and they moved back to Illinois to pursue better jobs. In the meantime, Krista's father was retiring from the Chicago Fire Department and wanted to move to the country. He moved in the home and acted as general contractor and caretaker for his last 15 years of a fabulous life. It would be a shame not to share this beautiful property with more people, and VRBO is the avenue to do that.

Why they chose this property

Krista grew up in a very humble log home in Wonder Lake, IL. They both were enchanted by the impressive log homes being built by a then-23 year old local man who acquired his skills at a Minnesota school for Swedish Scribe method log crafting.

Krista, Phill and Krista's father did much of the work on he home once the log structure was fleshed out. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into this structure and that made it very painful to think of selling when Krista's father passed on.

Krista's father is the one responsible for many of the antiques in the home. They were inherited from generations of German family members, and refinished by him while working at the Chicago firehouse. These decor items are so at home in the "cabin" that the owners can't picture them anywhere but there. Come see for yourself.

What makes this property unique

The empty piece of property was an amazing find in and of itself. in 1989 these properties were barely noticed by the locals and this piece was owned by a man in Illinois. He won it in a card game! (You can't make this stuff up.)

Krista and Phill cleared off countless trees; despite Phill having never even worked with a chain saw before. Once the building site was clear they worked with a wood foundation company to start the construction. Never heard of a wood foundation? Google it. It's fascinating. There are structures in this country that are built on centuries old wood foundations; and that was before the technology of drain tiles and plastic wrapping. In the end, a wood foundation takes away that damp and particularly chilly feeling of a traditional cement foundation. It is also convenient for when you want to add outlets, duct work, etc.. See if you can feel the difference while you stay there.
