Great location but ...
We stayed at Wave for 8nights during the XMas (premium price) period. I'll make comments below for larger groups (don't even think about it).
Our stay started badly with no-one to meet us or provide access to the property at the agreed time. After 45 minutes in the howling wind we managed to find Ayra who explained she had arranged someone else to meet us. However that person had left before we arrived by 1pm and had not left access to the key for us to enter.
We subsequently got a text from Ayra advising the greeter had waited and we were the ones that were late - both rude and wrong. We were on time and saw no-one leaving on the dirt road as we drove in. A bad start for a premium priced property.
The property is suitable only for 2 guests, and we sometimes found it cramped. The kitchen has an extended benchtop that dominates the 'open living' area. There is a table for 6 pressed up against the window, but we still found ourselves bumping the bench.
The TV area is tiny, with a cramped 3.5 seater facing the TV, however only 1 seat faces the TV. The storage is quite limited. There is a great deck but no outside table, although there is a stack of outdoor chairs in the lounge room.
The main bedroom is OK with good views, but no outdoor setting to enjoy the small deck area. It is at the top of a narrow, steep staircase. The ensuite is tiny, with a sloped roof encroaching on 50% of the floorspace. Be prepared to hit your head - tall people will struggle.
Although the listing advertises to sleep 7, Wave is completely unsuitable for groups larger than 4, children or for long stays. Its 3 bedrooms and a common area, that's it!
The narrow table/bench arrangement is a constant annoyance. It gets more cramped if you need more than 4 seats at the table - if you pulled the table away from the window to access the extra 2 seats, then people on the other side would be pressed against the bench, and your access to the far side of the room is through the kitchen/oven side of the bench.
The TV area is unsuited for more than 2 people. 4 people could squeeze onto the lounge, but 3 are either too close or facing away from TV. True lounging capacity in Wave is only 2 people if you have a cold/windy day.
We liked the location and would consider the sister property but hope for better comms and meet/greet for a premium property if we return to KI.
Overall poor value, poor property management, sleeps 7 but houses far less, good location.
Dear Chris, I'm so sorry to hear your stay at Wave Retreat did not live up to your expectation.
Unfortunately I was unable to meet you at the property due to unexpectedly being admitted into hospital the night before. (I did explain this on the phone when your partner called)
I had arranged for someone to meet you and check you in and to set up your welcome cheese platter along with additional "Christmas goodies" that I had purchased for you.
I was advised that they were at the property until 1pm awaiting your arrival.(1 hour after your expected arrival time) I am sorry that she did not wait around any longer.
There must have been some mis-communication regarding how long she was to wait for you. If I had known that you still hadn't arrived I would have advised her to call you.
When your partner contacted me to say no-one was there when you arrived and you needed the lockbox code, I apologised immediately and gave the code and explained that I was unwell and in hospital and wished you a pleasant stay in the property.
After I had recovered from being in hospital I attempted a few times during your stay to pop in and "say hi." However I never seemed to catch you at the property when I came past. Sorry I never got to meet you.
Regarding your review about the size and space of the property, yes I agree...It is much better suited to smaller groups.
This is why whenever a larger group attempts to book the property I always contact them and explain the size of the living/dining/kitchen area compared to the number of bedrooms. Whenever we have actually had a larger group stay, they have always been advised of the size of the property and we have never received a bad review from those larger groups.
Stunning panoramic ocean views for the whole family
Roaring fire, heating, including bathroom flooring to keep you warm. Floor to ceiling windows to enjoy the two ocean views with some bushes home to birds, pademelons and wallabies.
The space slept 7 adults comfortably for our 3 day stay and was even more stunning person than in the listing. We were greeted with celebratory wine and cheese and an intro to King Island with some local tips. Pantry stocked and care taken from pre-check in emails regarding milk, bread and jam choices. Every little detail, including local flora and fauna guides, to all the amenities you would need.
Thank you for great communication start to finish, for sharing the beautiful space and making our celebratory holiday such a special memory.
Excellent location and view. Very clean and tidy.
What an amazing spot to stay. We had 3 young children (which always makes a holiday a little harder) but this property was still well suited. I would love to return with just hubby for some real relaxation. Very quiet with the double glazed windows and easy to keep warm but with the 26 degree days we had still easy enough to get a cool breeze from the Ocean. Very welcoming hospitality and excellent communication from the property manager. We were very very happy.
Thanks guys! :) So glad you and your family had a wonderful time. Hopefully we will have you back again soon.:)
Wave Retreat King Island - a wonderful holiday
We had a lovely holiday here. Ayra was really friendly and helpful, and the house was immaculately clean, a beautiful cheese platter and bottle of bubbles there when we arrived, as it was our wedding anniversary during the week we were there. We were there in the winter, but the house was very warm, plenty of heaters and a wood heater as well. The kitchen was very well-provided with all the utensils etc you could want, the whole place was immaculately clean. Outside the scenery was spectacular, great views from the house, and it was nice and secluded but only ten minutes drive from Currie. We couldn't fault it, and would definitely stay here again when we come back to King Island, thanks Ayra!
The "King Island Breaks" properties are located on Barnes Road, overlooking the beautiful Southern Ocean. We are only 10 minutes away from the local township of Currie, 6 minutes from the Ocean Dunes golf course and 35mins from Cape Wickham. On the way to the properties from the airport, you drive past the King Island Dairy and cheese tasting shop.
