THE PROPERTY — The Crane at Cranes Roost is located on Florida’s Nature Coast on a multi-million dollar serene and spectacular large estate-sized and securely fenced and gated property. Located between Dunnellon (appx. 6 miles) and the Gulf of Mexico (appx. 15 mi.), it offers the perfect spot for those seeking a waterfront paradise that features the peaceful nature of Old Florida, while being close to big city amenities.

Sitting right on the shores of beautiful Lake Rousseau (appx. 4,000 acres) with 325’ of private waterfront with fishing/docking/sunbathing pier, this uniquely peaceful and beautiful property is a great jump-off spot for trips to Disney and other Central Florida attractions, as well as the Daytona Beach area, Orlando, Tampa and St. Pete. Located just outside of Dunnellon, Ocala, Gainesville, Crystal River, Cedar Key and the Gulf of Mexico are all close by. Dunnellon has Walmart, Winn Dixie and Publix stores as well as a variety of restaurants and services.

THE LOCATION — THIS is Levy County, Florida! THIS is for nature lovers who want to enjoy the peace and quiet this county offers. If you’ve never heard of it, you’re in good company as most people haven’t. Here, we have a glorious, untamed coastline – we DON’T have crowds! We DO have rivers winding through lush forests and wildlife thriving in expansive public lands. Levy has a total area of just over 1,400 square miles of which 295 are water. This relatively large county has a population of just over 40,000 people, we DON’T have crowds! Near Cranes Roost you’ll find the unique enclave of Cedar Key, with fewer than 1,000 residents, NO crowds! We DO have quaint restaurants that offer fresh regional seafood straight from the Gulf. The beaches here are unspoiled and routinely have NO CROWDS! We DO have lands that offer a prime location for hunting, fishing and wildlife watching. The Cedar Key Scrub Stare Reserve and the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge host hikers to explore salt marshes filled with grand cypress and oaks. Wacassa Bay Preserve State Park is only accessible by boat and is ideal for canoeing and kayaking in completely unspoiled landscapes filled with migratory birds, manatees, alligators and more. Levy offers both salt and freshwater fishing. For bicyclists, there is the Nature Coast State Trail, 32 miles long. NO CROWDS!

While Florida is a tourist mecca, visitors to Levy county come to get away from theme parks and CROWDED beaches; life is more relaxed here. This land has nesting grounds for migrating birds on the small islands dotting the coastal waters. Fanning Springs and Manatee Springs state parks offer warm, turquoise waters favorites for swimming, diving, snorkeling and manatee watching. The area offers a myriad of art and seafood festivals, as well as a watermelon and peanut festival. Then there is Devil’s Den, forgotten by time this is an underground spring with 72 degree crystal clear water year-round. Divers can see ancient rock formations and fossil beds 33 million years old, giving them an unforgettable underwater experience.

Catch your own dinner by joining a chartered fishing expedition, finding a stretch of waters to toss in a line, or fish directly from Cranes Roost’s private pier, NO CROWDS! Lake Rousseau is teeming with bass, catfish, bluegill, pickerel and more. Airboat excursions are also readily available in the area. Kayaking puts paddlers close to the surface of the water, giving explorers a chance to get within touching distance of surrounding flora and fauna. Paddling in the waters of Cedar Key, you are likely to encounter dolphins swimming; if you don’t have a kayak, one can be rented nearby.
THIS is Levy County, Florida! There is no place like this place, so this must be THE place! NO CROWDS!

There is room to park your car, boat trailer should you wish to bring your fishing boat and leave it at our dock (ask about availability), or your RV (there is a modest charge for RV storage, with or without electric) if you want to get off your wheels for a while.

Saltwater fishing in the Gulf of Mexico is super easy with a free boat launch just a few miles away. The Withlacoochee River runs right through Lake Rousseau, extending its reach, and the famous Rainbow River can be reached by boat just a short trip from our dock.

The property also lends itself perfectly for leisurely private walks, while the waterfront is completely outfitted with both lakefront seating with glorious views, a large fire bowl with cooking grate and picnic tables. The firewood rack is usually stocked with firewood and fire starter, providing we have supply. The pier is perfect for sunbathing besides docking your fishing boat, while the waterfront area has many shady spots.

The Crane is a modern home, completely outfitted with everything needed for daily living. The house is modern, light and bright, and has both front and rear furnished decks that dramatically extend living spaces. There is a gas grill on the rear deck. 2 homes currently participate in our vacation rental program, with a 3rd getting ready for the fall season. The other 2 homes are owner’s residences.

Relaxing Getaway on Lake Rousseau

We had a wonderful time at this special property on Lake Rousseau. Carla and John were great hosts, meeting us at the gate with a bottle of wine and always available to answer our questions. We’re already planning our next hiking and fishing trip to the area and wouldn’t think of staying anywhere else. Highly recommended! Thank you for everything, Carla and John.

Cranes Roost

Cranes Roost was a wonderful place to stay. When we got there we met Carla, John, and their son John. They were so friendly and accommodating. Carla showed us around the house. It was spotless and had nice furnishings. Everything we needed was there. The front and back deck had nice patio furniture. They had a beautiful well kept yard. There was a beautiful scenic riverfront with great views. They had a nice dock, chairs, picnic tables, and a huge fire pit stocked with wood. It was a great place to watch the amazing sunrise. In the afternoons it was a peaceful relaxing place to sit and read a book or watch the wildlife, including the cranes Ziggy, Buzz, and family! Thank you Carla, John, and John you were wonderful hosts. Barb and Greg

Peaceful Getaway

We stayed at one of the 5 houses on this property which was very tidy and well equipped. It had 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms with a full kitchen as well as laundry. We went kayaking one day on Rainbow River (RR) which this is conveniently located quite close to. The water at RR is crystal clear and one of the best places for kayaking year round. We then did a day trip to Cedar Key which was a cool town on the water with great restaurants less than an hour drive away. The property itself has an amazing sunrise view with an great collection of birds on and around the property. You can also view a number gators up close right from the dock. A number of large fish were jumping if you are a fisherman. We thoroughly enjoy nightly fires around the fire pit. The owners John and Carla live on-site and are top notch hosts going out of their way to make sure you have a most excellent experience. We highly recommend this spot and look forward to our next visit!

Fellowship with nature.

House was very clean, hosts were helpful, present and pleasant. They answered every question and need even when a storm knocked out the electricity. Visits by the resident cranes were a highlight.

About the host

Hosted by Carla Skolburg

Host profile image
John and Carla purchased this gorgeous Lake Rousseau-front property in 2003 and spent their time here replacing older homes with new ones, and creating a park-like environment on it's 6.5 acres of natural beauty. There are 5 homes that share this one-of-a-kind land; 3 are vacation rentals and 2 are owner homes. There is a total of 325' of waterfront, ensuring privacy. Owners spent 10 years working for Good Sam and Woodall's, inspecting and evaluating RV Parks and Campgrounds, providing them a solid background in the hospitality industry. Since Carla was born and raised in The Netherlands, she is able to communicate quite well in Dutch, moderately in German, and can get by with French. John was born and raised in Ohio and somehow they met, raised 2 boys, and now live here together with one of their sons and 3 hypoallergenic Havanese dogs and resident Sandhill Crane couple, ready to share this beautiful piece of nature called Cranes Roost.

Why they chose this property

We purchased Cranes Roost while spending a long weekend at a Bluegrass Music Festival about 2 miles from here. On our way into town for supplies, we saw the For Sale sign and stopped. Halfway into the property we knew it . . . it took our breath away and we had to buy it; we had never seen anything like this. We made the move from relatively large town living to what was then the outskirts of the middle of nowhere. Almost 20 years later, the area has grown up somewhat, and has been "discovered". Since most of the "discovery" happened across the lake from us our surroundings have remained very private, peaceful, quiet and secure. We have NEVER regretted making the move. We think you will NEVER regret having roosted here!

What makes this property unique

The air here is crisp and clean; we wake up to the sounds of birds. The sunrises and the sunsets are usually spectacular. Nearby are lake boating charters, deep sea fishing charters, hiking, biking and riding trails, a skeet shooting range, golf courses, the Gulf of Mexico, restaurants, shops and anything else you could want, all without the nuisance of modern-day sounds.
