About this property

Country house with views in lovely quiet valley near wine village of Gigondas

Built in 1900, added on to in the '40s, and brought into the 21st century in 2019, our three bedroom, three bathroom house with an open-plan kitchen and sunny terrace is a peaceful base from which to enjoy your southern France holiday. It is located a few minutes away from the beautiful wine-producing village of Gigondas in the southern Rhône region, an area that is crisscrossed with hiking and biking trails, many of which are in Les Dentelles de Montmirail (the Dentelle Mountains).

Of the other two buildings in the hamlet, one used to be a tile and brick factory with ovens and the other was housing for the workers. Nearby quarries supplied the raw materials. Our house was where the company director lived. It is spacious and simple.

Many lovely villages and wineries to explore are within easy reach of the house such as Séguret, Vaison-la-Romaine, Rasteau, Cairanne, Ste-Cécile-les-Vignes, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, and Fontaine-de-Vaucluse.

Being a French house, there are no fly screens on the windows. There are two mobile air conditioning units for summer and several mounted wall heaters for winter but it is easy and fresher to modulate the temperature of the house by managing the airflow via opening the windows in the mornings and evenings. When the mistral winds kick up, you'll want to use the door stops!

Please note there are no cafés or shops in walking distance of the house.

Sarah (English) and Ben (Australian) love to travel and have always had a soft spot for France. Ben is a winemaker and has made wine in France, Italy, California and in several parts of Australia. Sarah is a media and events producer who has worked all over the world. We now own and live on a winery called Duke's Vineyard in the Great Southern region of Western Australia where Ben makes award-winning dry riesling as well as several other cool climate varieties.

Our good friend Brett (English) is our partner in managing the house. He lives in Cambridge, England and runs a small empire of very good wine shops in England where he sells a large selection of southern Rhône wines from our neighbours. Brett helps us out looking after the house when we are overseas since he is much closer than we are most of the time! Brett is also a great resource for wine tourism if you are interested in tasting what the region has to offer.

Our local friends Laetitia and Patrick are the property managers and are your main point of contact while staying at our house. Their concierge services are available to help you with anything you might need during your visit, from booking a private chef or a massage, to sightseeing planning and restaurant booking.

We all love the area and are happy to recommend walks, restaurants, wineries and other activities.

We hope you enjoy your stay!

Why they chose this property

In 1985, Sarah lived in Pernes les Fontaines for six months, a town about half an hour away from the house, with her parents, sister and grandmother. Her parents loved France and spent many holidays hitchhiking around the country in the '60s. That appreciation of the culture, the food, the history, the people and the climate of southern France was passed along to Sarah and her sister that summer, and in 2017 she and Ben had an opportunity to purchase the house near Gigondas.

Slowly the house has been updated so it is comfortable and meets the needs of the modern traveler. It remains a simple house and one that is best for travelers that appreciate peace and quiet, as well as having a kitchen for meal preparation by yourself or a hired local chef.

What makes this property unique

Gazing at the views, listening to the birds, going for long walks to nearby villages for lunch, visiting local wineries ('domaines') and taking meals on the terrace are some of our favourite things to do.

We hope that you will enjoy our house as much as we do!
