NSWH was fully renovated in 2019 with all new appliances, a Queen bed with full ensuite bath, a second bedroom with a Queen bed, and a second full bathroom. The living and dining rooms boast large windows facing the ocean. North Sea Whale House is uniquely situated on the sunny side of Bonavista peninsula, steps from the Atlantic ocean and a commercial stage, in the quaint working fishing harbor of Summerville. A 2.5 hour drive from St. John’s, 25 minutes from historic Trinity and scenic Port Rexton; 45 minutes from shopping in Clarenville, and 50 minutes from the Bonavista lighthouse. Depending on which part of the year you’re visiting, watch breaching humpback, fin, minke and killer whales from the comfort of the front bridge (Newfanese for ‘deck’). Walk down to the fishing stage to meet the local fishermen and see the same tools of the trade, and fish cleaning and salting techniques Newfoundland fishermen have been incorporating for 500 years. Enjoy a quiet afternoon on the back bridge off the master bedroom and depending on the timing of your visit, pick blueberries in the back yard, or take a walk along any of Summerville’s beautiful coves and beaches where sea glass and other treasures abound. For bird lovers, you’ll be surrounded by blue jays, sparrows, crows, seagulls, osprey and bald eagles to name just a few. The fishing stage is a big draw for seabirds looking for a free feast following the filleting of cod caught daily in Summerville harbor. Stop by the stage and who knows, a kindly local fisherman may just gift you with a couple of filets of fresh caught north Atlantic cod! NSWH rents year round, with electric baseboard heat and snow removal in winter. Cable/WIFI is turned off from Dec to May, but can be turned on for an additional fee depending on length of stay. NSWH is perfect for you if you’re looking for an authentic, non-touristy Newfoundland outport experience. Summerville maintains the same unique traditional charm it has had for hundreds of years. Locals refer fondly to the area as being a "festival free zone." Our sincere desire is that your friendly, respectful, discreet interaction with the locals will keep it that way! Thank you! Coco and Dave NSWH shares a driveway with our neighboring vacay rental. Please park next to the side entrance. Dave works from his shed at the back of the property and is available for any questions you might have. Summerville is one of Newfoundland's best kept secrets. On the sunny side of Bonavista Bay, Summerville is an active fishing community with a busy fish plant at the wharf, where crab, lobster, capelin, cod, squid and other species are collected from local fishermen for distribution locally and abroad.
