About this property

Medieval Tuscan Castle with 8 bedrooms for 18 guests

Set on Mount Amiata in the south of Tuscany, Castello Di Potentino is a working organic farm that produces award-winning wines and olive oil. Its grounds include a private chapel and beautiful garden and a beautiful swimming pool set amongst thousand year old olive trees.

Charlotte makes award-winning wines and olive oil and Alexander makes gin from botanicals from the valley. The castle also has a large vegetable garden and fruit vegetables can be bought from us, fresh from the garden.

The rooms all have different designs, some with wooden beams and others with frescoes on the ceiling. Each one has antique furniture and plenty of old world charm.

The Nobile- which is the old Noble villa of the castle- has 8 bedrooms (all with their own bathroom, 6 ensuite and 2 with bathrooms next door). All are decorated with antique furniture.

Five of the rooms are double, one is a full double with an extra single bed, and there are 2 triples with three single beds. All have their own bathrooms.

The Nobile Apartment is on the two upper floors of the main villa and has its own kitchen, dining room as well as an ancillary kitchen for making quick meals (with a coffee machine, hob and microwave).

There are two large sitting rooms, a library (over the two floors). One can also eat outside in the courtyard under the loggia which has magnificent views of Monte Amiata.

About the host

Host profile image
Charlotte Horton has been making award-winning wines in Tuscany for over 20 years. She has restored two Castles in Tuscany. At Castello di Potentino, she has revitalized an abandoned estate, planting new vineyards, bringing back olive trees into production and recreating the castle as a cultural centre and a bed and breakfast. She and Alexander have been running food and wine pop-up events in London, Ireland and France since 2010. She is currently working on a book about Potentino Life with photographer Michael Woolley. Before moving to Italy, she worked for Vogue Magazine, Secker and Warburg Publishing House and then as a freelance journalist. In 2013, she was recognized as one of the Barclay’s Women of Achievement.

Alexander Greene was part of the team that set up the Frontline Club, a members’ club and restaurant in Paddington that specializes in Independent Journalism, hosting the likes of Wikileaks and Litvinenko. He then went on to work at the book publisher Little, Brown Book Group whose authors include J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer and Patricia Cornwell. He is now a director at Castello di Potentino and Raymond Chandler Ltd..

Charlotte has been living at and restoring Potentino since 2000 when the family purchased the ruin. Alexander gave up his job in publishing in London in 2011 and moved to Potentino.

Why they chose this property

When we first came to Potentino, it was a ruin- owned by 24 different owners, the castle had been abandoned- the roof was falling in and there was no running water, electricity or the doors and windows. It was one of the most beautiful buildings we had ever seen. It took more than 6 years to restore the main building- and we continue to restore parts of the castle every year. The castle is a labour of love.

What makes this property unique

Staying at Potentino is an opportunity to stay in a fully working castle. The winery is in the old stables. The countryside around the castle is unspoilt- there are waterfalls below the castle and at night there is a huge sky with very little light pollution.

Drink the wines from the castle's vineyards, swim in the lovely swimming pool and take walks along the valley to enjoy the peace.
