About this property

A farm surrounded by the primeval forest on the goddess island of Miyajima

The farm is located on the island of Miyajima, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan and registered as a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. It is surrounded by a virgin forest on the sunny southeastern slope behind the sacred mountain "Misen", where it is said that the legendary Buddhist monk Kukai, also known as Kobo Daisi, trained in the early Heian period. The farmhouse is a vibrant fusion of Mediterranean atmosphere and classical Japanese interiors, where you would feel lost in wonderland.

As the owner worked as a Japanese-French interpreter in the French-speaking countries in Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mali, Benin, etc.) for a total of more than 20 years and is fluent in both English and French, he thinks visitors from abroad could fully enjoy their stay without feeling any linguistic barriers.

Kenji-San has a lovely farm that is the perfect mountain side retreat for some quiet and solitude! The Japanese cedar bath is enough reason alone to book! The best bath I’ve ever had! Not only that but Kenji-San was very flexible and accommodating with my arrival and departure. He even offered me vegetables from his farm to go along with the food I had brought. They were so fresh and delicious! This is the perfect place to get away and refresh yourself in the elements. I wish I could’ve stayed longer!

The farm has a gorgeous view of the island and inland sea. Kenji is an interesting host who will pick you up from the port and pick fresh vegetables from his farm. Be aware however that the outside furo (bath) pictured on Orbtiz/Expedia is no longer in use which is very unfortunate because it was what drew us to this property. Also, the futon (bed) has no cover sheet so you are sleeping on a bare mattress which is not common at most inn's in Japan. Also know that you are expected to bring your own bath towel which I also have never encountered in all of my stays in Japan. I thought he was joking when I was told that it would be 300 yen per towel. Another awkward moment came while we were bathing in the semi open air bathroom in the morning. Kenji decided to have a business meeting with three other men right in our plain sight. We had to close the door and block our view to avoid seeing them and being seen. Overall a unique experience but one I would not to repeat.

I had a wonderful time staying at Ken’s place and I would highly recommend it to any solo travelers or couples that are planning on staying on Miyajima Island. I stayed two nights at Ken’s place and that was enough time for me to explore around the island. I backpacked and was able to fit my luggage in the lockers at the Miyajima ferry station until it was time for checkin. Because the farm is on the other side of the island in a remote area Ken kindly offered to shuttle me to and from. If you like hiking it is between a 5-6 mile/9km walk from the property to the main area of town on Miyajima (about 2 hours), but the walk is lovely and you get to see the beaches and shrines on the other side of the island. On my second day there Ken graciously offered to shuttle me back at the end of the day after exploring which was nice! Because Ken lives on a farm he showed me what he was growing and even offered me vegetables he grew to make a salad for each of the nights I stayed, which was delicious! The property is isolated and is very relaxing with the sounds of nature. There is also a lovely view of the sea with other islands in the background. Ken has another property so you get the entire house to yourself! You can also tell that Ken has put a great amount of detail into the property, the house feels very traditional and has all of the amenities you would want. Ken said that he was inspired by Miyazaki and during my stay there I felt like I was in one of Miyazaki’s movies.

This was a perfect experience. It is so peaceful and beautiful on Kenji’s farm. The room was so warm and cozy, the property was very clean and well kept, and it was a PRIVILEGE to stay. Kenji was a great host, picking you up and dropping you off, answering questions and showing you the ropes of the house. You have to bring your own dinner because it’s a 45 minute drive up the mountains of miyajima but we cooked some ramen and fried up potatoes and onions from Kenjis farm! He has a small Japanese bath on site overlooking the farm which was delightful and perfect for an early morning hot bath. Remember - if you don’t have towels you will pay 300 yen to borrow very small but very absorbent towels. PLEASE come here!!! It was the highlight of our trip, truly an oasis and it gives you plenty of time to explore miyajima! Okay we’ll stop gushing now - just go!

È venuto poi a riprenderci il giorno successivo all’orario concordato.

Kenji picked us up from near the ferry port on Miyajima island after messaging a few days before to arrange with clear instructions. On the way to his farm, we had a lovely chat about his life and career as a translator, our lives, and Miyajima. He let us stop off to look at a beautiful view of the sea from the road. Kenji was an incredibly attentive host, showing us all around his vegetable patch, outdoor bath, and the traditional Japanese style room we were staying in. Everything was so thoughtfully considered and he explained it all, such as how the bedroom was styled in the traditional way to embrace shadows, very different to European decorations which centre on light. The evening we spent at the property was delightful - cooking our food, eating it at the table with a view over the Seto sea and reading as the sun set - later there was an incredible view of the moon above the water. The day after, Kenji picked us up from the farm and dropped us back at the ferry port. Our only regret about the trip to Miyajima is that we didn't stay for longer - if we were to do it again we'd have loved to stay another day and go down to the beach near the house or hiking a different trail. We can't recommend it more.

Esperienza unica

Beautiful stay

My partner and I got to stay at this property for one night. Once we arrived, however, we wished we could stay another! This property is so magical, and the entire place is full of the host's personal artistic touches, like handmade tiles, and Ghibli-style lights around the bath-house.The one thing I would note is that the bathroom and toilet are separate from the main living quarters, so late-night toilet runs can be dark and cold! Bring someone to hold your hand.

The house is beautiful and Kenji-san is a fantastic host. The property is very rural, so you *need* to bring your own food/ingredients for dinner. Kenji-san will personally drive you to and from the ferry port. He also picked fruits and vegetables from his garden for us to enjoy. He even offered to take us to lunch at one of his favorite local places (normally unknown or inaccessible to tourists). Overall, Kenji-san was an incredibly kind, funny, and interesting man. He loves to talk about linguistics, art, and being a “baby boomer.” His English was great, and he is also fluent in French. I would rate Kenji-san’s farmhouse higher than 5 stars if I could!!!

Can’t speak more kindly about my experience. I booked this place last minute, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The property is not accessible by walking, so the host instead coordinates to pick-up and drop you off from the Miyajima ferry port. He’s extremely friendly and kind, and the about 10 minute drive was spent talking about the island, and friendly conversation. After we arrived he toured me around the farmhouse property, and made sure I knew how to use everything and that I had all I needed and more before he left. The property’s interior is beautiful traditional Japanese architecture, with a lot of art and spacious rooms. The main living space has a bedroom upstairs with tatami and futon beds, and a basement area with an iori-style table/center furnace that is beautiful. Next, there is a full kitchen with windows that lift up to a bar in the breakfast/living room, which has classic shoji (sliding doors) that open to a small engawa porch. It’s a perfect spot to sit, enjoy your coffee, and watch the sun rise over the view. The bathhouse area with the traditional Japanese soaking tub was also amazing, again with shoji that can be opened to fully enjoy an open air bath with the scenic view. Don’t book expecting to be able to walk to the Itsukushima shrine or shopping, but certainly book if you want to spend some time in a beautiful traditional farm home and enjoy the scenery and surrounding nature on this historic island. It feels magical. 10/10

Serenity on miyajima

This was my second trip to the island and I wanted to stay overnight this time without dealing with hordes of other tourists and looking for something on the quiet side. This is a farm on the far side of the island under the shadow of the mountain top with the most excellent view of the surrounding clear blue waters. There is a comfortable Japanese style bed, a hot bath and shower, a well equipped kitchen and a relaxing lounge. The host will pick you up at the ferry visitor info booth and drive you to the farm. Once there he will give you the grand tour and select vegetables for you to have a salad for your dinner. You have to bring your own proteins to cook for your dinner. I was able to take a hot bath whilst he sun set, then cook a chicken and pork dinner with a fresh garden salad. Then I relaxed under the stars until it was time for bed, where I retreated to the futon to sleep Japanese style. In the morning I had eggs for breakfast while the rising sun illuminated the sparkling blue waters of the surrounding sea.

Incredibly Special Place

We have travels a lot, and Kenji’s farm is one of the most special places we have stayed. The land itself is incredibly serene - the view of the sea from every part of his property, all while being at the foot of Mt Misen - the landscape was legitimately inspiring. And the house itself is perhaps even more beautiful - so conscientiously designed. Obviously, the wooden hot tub/shower and outdoor areas are a highlight (we saw snow falling from the tub!) and the kitchen is one of my favorites I’ve cooked in, but so many little touches throughout. It has everything you need, and Kenji is such a supremely thoughtful and attentive host. Went out of his way to transport us, answer our many questions about the place and land, and sincerely offer the chance for connection. We also explored the surrounding area, the beach that’s just a 1/4 mile walk is stunning, and the run I took on the road from the house was one of my all time favorites. This place was the perfect way to s l o w d o w n after a lot of big cities on our Japan trip. I sincerely cannot recommend it enough. I am tempted to book a return trip to Japan just to stay at this place. Come visit, and thank you Kenji!
