About this property

AN 18th-CENT HAVEN RESIDING IN ITS OWN ELEGANT BURGUNDIAN SETTING - DORDOGNE

Burgundian chateau surrounded by four medieval towers, broad moats and by extensive and well-maintained gardens.
The beautiful château has stood undisturbed in a sleepy and tranquil landscape for decades and the elaborate and complex ecosystem of man and nature, developed over the centuries, wraps the old stones in a comforting blanket of serenity. Of course there were some tense moments as one looks back: two world wars, the siege of Paris, the French Revolution, the Wars of Religion..., but there were also some periods of astonishing wealth. Château de Missery is an expression of two such periods: an 18th-century residence built on the vestiges of an earlier medieval castle. There’s a generous dining room hung with portraits; a sitting room which opens onto a wide terrace overlooking the moat; kitchen with a quirky collection of coathangers; a breakfast room; a magnificent hallway with stone flagged floor and sundry other offices on the ground floor plus a collection of high-ceilinged and light-filled bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs.

Elegant Wines, Seasonal Dining & Blissful Bedrooms

For those quiet days and peaceful summer evenings back at the Château, enjoy our mix of regional, seasonal, and fresh French and English cuisine accompanied by a glass of wine, play a family game in the salon, or take a stroll around the moat, gazing at the sky full of stars. Finally, retreat to your bedroom, a refuge of bliss and cotton linens, where you can let your soul and body come to a rest.

To learn more about Burgundy, its wine and cuisine, holiday activities at the Château and in the region, as well as to view some of our bedrooms, take your time and explore our site. We look forward to welcoming you in glorious France soon!
The Château is available for exclusive rentals, from May to October. It can sleep 14 comfortably, with scope to add a few more children, or adults willing to share.

It has 9 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, a large entrance hall with a grand piano and sweeping staircase, a grand dining room, a listed, panelled salon with French doors leading onto a rear terrace, a sun-filled breakfast room, which can also double up as small, intimate dining room, and two libraries. All rooms are light and spacious, cool and quiet, and dark at night, with the most fantastic views over the property and the fields and hills beyond. We often hear the refrain: “I haven’t slept that well in years!”.

Regenerate your Spirit
When finally it is time to go to bed, dream with the stars, the owls, the water lapping against the moat walls. Drop off after a ‘tisane’ made of flowers from our lime avenue, sweetened with honey produced by the bees in the hives in the orchards. Watch the shooting stars in August in the clearest of skies, when the dining room chatter has died down, and the harvest moon has dipped under the horizon. Listen to the enchanting song of the nightingale. This is nature as it has always been, perfectly dark and silent, bringing true sleep, rest and tranquility. All one needs to regenerate the spirit!

There are eight bedrooms, each agreeably spacious and wonderfully unique with high ceilings, some with exposed beams, all with beautiful views looking out onto the grounds of the château and beyond. Generous wardrobe space, comfy down filled pillows, latest reads, magazine monthlies, and château postcards are just some of the comforts provided, to help you feel truly at home. Each of the five bathrooms comes equipped with essential toiletries, to lighten your packing load, as well as a hairdryer and soft, fluffy towels. all the bedrooms are designed to the same level of comfort, and each has their own character and story.

At the centre of the walled kitchen garden, there is an 18th Century stone ‘Bassin’, of 11m in diameter and 1 metre in depth – perfect to splash about in, or create whirlpools in, on a hot summer’s day. There is a ping-pong tower, and croquet lawn, a rowing boat; inside fun and games include: cards, Scrabble, Monopoly, Twister, TV (with international channels) and an extensive DVD collection, to complement the time-consuming fine dining and wining that the region is loved for! For those who cannot tear themselves away from the rest of the world, there is WIFI throughout.. though we bet you’ll forget all about it by the end of your stay!

You will be well looked after too: two Château Hosts will show you to your rooms and around the property on arrival: they will be on hand during the week to assist with basic concierge needs, such as booking tables, taxis, translations, directions, etc. They will also lay out and clear up a full continental breakfast (think fresh croissants and baguettes, fruit, hams & cheeses…), undertake 2-3 hours of basic housekeeping, including freshening up bedrooms and bathrooms, daily; and turning down the beds in the evenings.

Our cheerful gardener will be present part of the time, and will deliver fruit and vegetables to the kitchen table for guests, or the chef, to prepare fabulously fresh, seasonal cuisine, depending on what’s-a-growing!

All the above is offered as part of a self-catering holiday, although to make the very best of your stay at the château and in Burgundy, of your time with friends and family, we thoroughly recommend the Chef Packages, developed in collaboration with talented local chefs – some Michelin-star trained. Depending on which package you choose, your stay will include full or half board, an enhanced, bespoke breakfast, as well as healthy nibbles and indulgent home-made patisseries, waters, soft drinks and some house wines.
