About this property

Mid-Century Modern Farmhouse (Horse Friendly)

Step into a vintage explosion at one of Alberta's few remaining Mid-Century Modern country mansions, nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. While the mansion's restoration continues, phase 1 is complete, professionally designed/decorated down to the last detail. Our 80 acre regenerative ag farm is located along the highway between Millarville and Okotoks, a convenient 15 min. drive south of Calgary city limits and a 10 min. drive west of Okotoks, where all kinds of amenities await.

The 1951 mansion is divided into three distinct spaces, each named after the two sisters who built it - the north wing (Enid), the central structure (Iva), and the south wing, an indoor swimming pool. As we progress towards our vision of restoring Iva's space and the swimming pool, we are delighted to offer Enid's space - a beautifully restored wing of the mansion that exudes vintage charm. Carefully designed to retain its original glory, Enid's space offers guests a welcoming retreat that comfortably sleeps four guests. You'll have access to two cozy bedrooms with a king and queen bed, a living room with a TV, a dining area for four, and a kitchen fully equipped with all the essentials.

While the exterior of the mansion is still undergoing restoration, you won't want to miss out on experiencing the unique nostalgic charm of the interior. The furnishings and accessories are mostly vintage, giving you a glimpse into the past with perfectly imperfect wood floors, carefully selected vintage furniture (all steam cleaned and ready for your use), as well as classic collections of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books for you to peruse. From the delightful morning sound of freshly brewed coffee percolating on our 1952 stovetop to the gorgeous vintage glassware to sip from later in the day - we're sure you'll feel right at home on the farm.

BONUS SPACE - In addition to the restored spaces, we're pleased to offer a special bonus area to our guests as we continue with our restoration work. Our 700 square foot fireside lounge and 800 square foot outdoor patio with stunning mountain views are yours to enjoy as part of your booking - completely free of charge! Fun fact - the fireplace lounge and outdoor patio were shared spaces utilized by both Enid and Iva during their time here. Belly-up to the original button-tufted bar or head out to the patio for a game on the vintage shuffleboard table, either way, you won't be disappointed. While we plan to offer these areas as an add-on in the future, they are currently included in the listing price as a token of appreciation for your understanding as we continue the restoration process.

Come experience the unique vintage charm of our Mid-Century Modern country mansion and make unforgettable memories in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains!

Other things to note:
Please note that we do not allow pets in our space, but we happily welcome guests who wish to bring their horses and horse trailer for their stay. Our location is perfect for horse enthusiasts, and we invite you to inquire about our horse boarding options during your visit. We look forward to hosting you and your equine companions!

We have a washer and dryer in a shared space, if you'd like to make use of it just let us know and we'll be sure it's available for you.

For any other special requests regarding our farmhouse or property, please do not hesitate to reach out. We will do our best to accommodate any special requests you may have.

Details worth mentioning:
Parking is available on the driveway in front of the farmhouse. Tents, campers, or trailers (aside from guests bringing their horses) are not permitted on the property.

We love having children stay with us, but please be aware that we are a working farm with animals and bodies of water (seasonal creek & ponds) that can be dangerous at times. Therefore, CHILDREN MUST BE SUPERVISED AT ALL TIMES. And just a head's up - our farmhouse is not childproofed, and we do not provide cribs or baby gates.

You are welcome to explore our walking/cross country skiing trails, but please do not enter barns or fenced areas with livestock. If you're interested in learning more about our regenerative ag/permaculture farm practices and how we grow and raise much of our own food, please ask us about arranging a farm tour (approximately 1 hour long for an additional cost). Skating on our pond may be possible depending on the time of year; please check with us first to ensure it's safe to do so.

Our indoor pool and outdoor hot tub are undergoing restoration, but will be available soon. Stay tuned for updates!

Guests are not permitted to host parties, photo or video shoots, or events of any kind.

Our entire property is strictly non-smoking/vaping. A $300 plus 5% GST fee will be charged if it has been determined there was smoking/vaping inside or outside the farmhouse.

To avoid any confusion, we'd like to clarify that only the number of guests (including children) specified in your initial reservation are permitted on the property and allowed to stay overnight. If additional guests arrive at any time during your stay than originally stated in your reservation, we reserve the right to cancel your reservation immediately and the full cost of your accommodation rental will be forfeited.

Although we welcome guests with horses, we have implemented a no-pet policy for our guests' farm stays. Although we love pets, we are a working farm with several animals, and it will keep the peace for the animals that call the farm “home.” Thanks for your understanding.

We hope these guidelines make your stay at our farm enjoyable and safe. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask us. Thanks, all!

Wonderful Country Home
This historic country mansion is a neat getaway. While the exterior is undergoing its transformation, the interior is clean, beautifully decorated and holding true to its vintage charm. There is plenty of space and yet it is cosy. The panoramic views of the foothills and mountains from the kitchen and living room windows is fantastic. The kitchen is well-stocked for all your needs and the personalized touches with farm-fresh eggs, muffins, bread and coffee make breakfast a breeze. There is no microwave so adjust your meal plans accordingly. The bedrooms are also cosy and the beds are very comfortable. Communication with Travis is excellent. While the location is in the country, it is easily accessible and a short drive to Okotoks and Millarville and approximately 25 minutes to Diamond Valley and to many good hikes in Kananaskis country. Overall a great place to stay!

Beautiful Place
This is a wonderful place to stay. Away from the city but only about 45-minute drive to Calgary. Beautiful countryside. Travis and Deanna were so kind. Will definingly stay here again. They offer to give us a tour of their farm, but we ran out of time. Hopefully next time.

Welcome to our farm! We're original Saskatchewanites - a Fireman and an Interior Designer - who are serial renovators and love nothing more than breathing new life into old spaces. We've embarked on an ambitious renovation project to restore the land and buildings on our old farm in the Foothills of Alberta, and we can't wait to share our progress with you! We hope you'll come visit us and experience the perfectly imperfect beauty of our farm for yourself.

Why they chose this property

Our property is one of the few mid-century country mansions still standing today in Alberta. Despite the previous owner's plans to demolish the house (thankfully it didn't come to fruition), we are restoring her back to her original glory. Here is a little bit of history of our farm, if you're interested:

1901 - Robert Turner (one of the brothers of which the town Turner Valley, AB, was named) was on the hunt to purchase a property north of the Sheep River. He acquired a full section and built a "luxurious and substantial" sandstone house in 1908, located 2 miles from our house and since torn down. It was known as the Turner Place or Clydesdale Ranch, and "their parties were notable, decorous occasions." - Foothills Echoes book

1951 - Sisters Enid and Iva Knoepfli purchase 524.6 acres from Robert Turner for $24,685. The daughters of Swiss builder Jacob Knoepfli, their father constructed over 300 houses/apartments during Calgary's first building boom in the 1920s. He built the historic York Hotel in downtown Calgary (which just so happened to have one of the very first speakeasies in Alberta) and owned the St. Regis Hotel; Enid, Iva and their brother were responsible for the day-to-day operations at the York. Once acquiring the former Turner property, they move into the run-down stone house and begin construction of their Mid-Century Modern (MCM) home. Apparently, they also loved to entertain and were the hosts of many large parties over the years...especially pool parties.

1952 - Enid, Iva and her husband, Les, move into their new MCM home and enjoy a home with "modern facilities." Iva and Les have five boys and Enid rocks the single life - she's listed as a "Spinster" on all of the county docs.

2000 - Subdivision has occurred on the 524.6 acres and the second owners purchase 80 acres and the original Knoepfli MCM homestead. They plan to demolish the home, but thankfully, don't.

2019 - We buy our first farm!

What makes this property unique

Enid's Space (Phase 1) is now complete and available for your enjoyment. This curated collection features vintage furnishings and housewares, providing a unique experience for your stay. As we continue our renovation project, you'll also have access to the Fireplace Lounge and outdoor patio, adding approximately 1400 sq ft of indoor and outdoor space for you to enjoy. Additionally, we offer regenerative ag farm tours for an additional cost, where you can learn about how we grow and raise much of our own food. Please let us know if you're interested!
