The space
Welcome to the small version of the tiny house dream that remains nestled within my new home, just east of the CBD yet a world away.
One of the joys of building a new house is that you get to imagine your dream retreat. This master bedroom and en suite has only the basics, as a tiny house would: a beautiful bed, a great bookshelf, a gorgeous shower head, an egg chair on the deck, and the ability to dream the night away in an outdoor claw foot bath under the stars.
This place was based on the many nooks and hideaways I loved around New Zealand whose cozy minimalism made them feel luxurious.
Miserable weather can be a bitch in New Zealand, so the indoors has now been plussed up with a 50-inch TV with Netflix, YouTube, a small DVD collection of New Zealand (and international) classics, cozy heating, an espresso coffee machine, and extra blankets.
There is also a park two doors down from our house, making the area great for runners. I also provide a guide to my favourite spots in Christchurch and Canterbury, which I am constantly updating. Recommendations welcome!
Guest access
Everything you see is 100% yours. You have a private entrance, which leads to the outdoor area, and the bedroom and en suite are just off the deck. There are no shared spaces and no host interaction.
There is plenty of off-street parking on our street for your car, and our driveway is available upon previous arrangement and polite request in extenuating circumstances such as when people have their livelihoods or all their personal belongings in their vehicle.
Please note that there is a narrow path around the back of the house to your area; you might want to walk it first to get a sense of it before bringing your luggage.
For your privacy, safety, and health, the door that connects your bedroom to the rest of the house will remain locked throughout your stay.
Other things to note
Extended stays may be available upon request, please message with preferred dates.
There is a microwave and a kettle for coffee and tea, but there are no cooking facilities-- similar to a hotel room. Treat yourself and eat out. You're on holiday, baby!
Please also note that your area is a separate section of my home, but as we share walls (and a door to the house side that remains locked), you will hear some sounds of life, especially when we are in the hallway between bedrooms. These times tend to be when my flatmate and I leave for work in the morning and are winding down at night. If you expect or need absolute silence, this is not the right place for you.
Being so close to the city, the outdoor area is in close proximity to other houses. Since the house is new, the landscaping in the outdoor area is a work in progress. I am working on screening out the neighbours houses with plants and other landscaping features, which will increase the sense of privacy over time. However, at the moment, when standing on the deck or in the bedroom, my neighbours houses are clearly visible and their windows are somewhat visible through the bamboo screening, too.
Since the area with the bath is at ground level, being seen by the neighbours when sitting on the bench or relaxing in the bath is a non-issue. However, they are still close, so if you are shy, you might want to limit carousing outside.
Iron and ironing board available upon request. During your stay, either myself or my lovely, trustworthy flatmate Brian will be in the house and looking after you in case you need anything.
