About the host
Hosted by Simon

We moved to Orange in 1979 when I was all of 4 years old. Ever since, we have been gradually converting the rundown piece of land into a commercial cherry orchard which now boasts 12,000+ cherry trees, the produce of which is picked, packed and shipped all across Australia and exported to several countries including Taiwan, Singapore, Korea & Vietnam. In 2020 we decided to utilise a small 4-acre parcel of land at the top of the cherry orchard to diversify away from orcharding and Basalt Luxury Accommodation was born. We opened the doors to our 3 luxury studios in Feb 2023. It's been such a interesting, challenging and now enjoyable process which has given us the opportunity to share this slice of paradise with guests from near & far who are seeking relaxation, rejuvenation and somewhere unique to stay. Basalt ticks all the boxes!
Why they chose this property
My family chose the Orange area originally to simply raise their family in the country vs the city. Orange's high altitude and cool climate have been the influential factors in keeping us here as its perfect growing conditions along with the rich basalt soil. Despite living in Sydney for a few years after my schooling, I now raise my family here as we love the fresh country air, the community feel and the slower pace of life.
What makes this property unique
First & foremost - the amazing views. Very hard to put into words but I still get a little transfixed whenever I'm there just staring out over the Orange Region. Being based in a working cherry orchard is unique in itself and at 1,100m altitude I believe we are one of, if not the highest accommodation offering in the entire Central West. Basalt is located 10km out of Orange - close to everything yet a world away.
