About this property

Year round residence built in 2003 has right to use adjacent 300+ acres of conservation land private to neighborhood. Neighborhood is a private community that is family friendly. Kayaks equipped for four paddlers (one double and two singles). One person Old Town Canoe for the fisherman. Home has two upstairs bedrooms one with a double bed and one with a double bed and a single bed with shared full bath. Downstairs has a bedroom with a kingsize bed and a second bathroom. Eat-in screened sunporch. Kitchen table with four chairs and a bench seat. Handicapped friendly (first floor bedroom and bathroom, lever door handles, wheelchair wide doorways and ramp access to house, second floor staircase dual railings to help with balance).

Fall foliage and winter cross country skiing and ice fishing.

Jean, one of the owners, grew up spending vacations on the lake. A favorite spot of hers, and her father and his brothers before her was a remote sandy beach you could only access by boat. When the property came up for sale many years later, she and her husband Rob bought it. Working with a local conservation group, the character of the land has been preserved. 35 homes are spread out over the 1.5 mile stretch of the lake in a private community. Now the beach is a short walk away - and private to Jean and Rob's property. It's a very quiet spot, and remains, to many, the loveliest spot on the lake.

Great swimming and boating. Small gas grill and picnic table, beach chairs on beach. Kayaks are provided or bring your own boat and beach it on the white sand. There is a boat launch private to the community. Eat-in heated sunporch. Grocery stores, golf, hospital, restaurants 10 minutes away. Fish for bass, landlocked salmon, or white perch. Ice cream stand and restaurant 2 miles away. Championship golf course at world famous Algonquin Resort in St. Andrews, NB, CA, 45 minutes away, is open to the public. 15 minutes to Calais Golf Course. Located in the St. Croix River Valley, there are numerous river and lake trips minutes away. Two border crossings into New Brunswick Canada are 15 minutes away. Campobello Island is a one hour trip. Cutler to buy lobsters off the dock is 45 minutes away.

About the host

Hosted by Jean or Rob Lawlis

Host profile image
Jean and Rob like to kayak, cross country ski, hike, and read. Both are Mainers by birth and choice. Jean is a retired engineer and math teacher. Rob is a semi-retired attorney. Rob is originally from northern Maine and Jean's family is from the area where the cottage is located. Shown in photograph are Jean and Rob and their three kids, Sonya, David, and Robby. David is a chef, Sonya a veterinarian and Robby a hospital executive. All love Maine, but jobs have taken them away ;-(

Why they chose this property

Meddybemps Lake is where Jean's grandparents built a cottage in the 1920s and where both she and her father spent many happy summers growing up.

What makes this property unique

Summers at the lake are hard to beat. It's a cool place to ride out the heatwaves in other states. The average daytime high in July/August is 77 degrees. During the hottest day in 2022, the temperature in Calais reached 90. In the shade, on the beach we were very comfortable - in the low 80s and a nice breeze. Temperature at night usually drops to the 60s. Lovely in the fall.
