Duga-3 was an over-the-horizon radar built near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, and was designed to detect any missiles launched against the Soviet Union.

It was nicknamed the "Russian Woodpecker" due to the repetitive sound that could be picked up by shortwave listeners.
