Australia\'s oldest vineyard is found at the Langmeil Winery, which is one of the earliest wineries established in the region. The northern valley towns of Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Seppeltsfield, Stockwell, Light Pass, and Greenock are important viticultural centres, while the southern regions centred on Rowland Flat, Lyndoch, and Williamstown are home to some of Australia\'s premium wine labels. In the hills to the east of the valley, delightful Angaston is the commercial centre for Pewsey Vale, Vine Vale, Penrice and Bethany. Bethany and Langmeil are the earliest settlements in the region, dating back to 1842.
Well known names such as Jacobs Creek, Penfolds, Wolf Blass, Peter Lehmann, Saltram, Yalumba, and Seppelts are based in the Barossa Valley and are among the eighty-plus wineries and five hundred-plus grape growers that contribute to the on-going reputation of the region.
Most renowned for its opulent styles of Shiraz, the region also produces fine examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon and Chardonnay.
Thanks to South Australia’s relative isolation and strict quarantine regulations since the 1800’s, the Barossa Valley was spared the disastrous outbreaks of plylloxera and many other diseases that have wiped out other wine regions during the last two hundred years. Surviving old shiraz, grenache and mouvedre vines now contribute to some of the unique and exquisite wines for which the Barossa is famous, along with specially bred and selected cabernet sauvignon and other grape varieties.

The Barossa Valley lies within the state\'s coastal temperate zone. The mostly placid waters of Gulf St. Vincent are 60-70 kilometres away. From the standpoint of the grape, the valley is regarded as a hot district, similar to Portugal, with summer temperatures often rising to 30oC and more - stressful for vines unless supplemented by irrigation or watering. But for the traveller, the climate is most comfortable - cool to mild in winter, warm to hot in summer, with spring and autumn being delightfully mild.
The Barossa Valley is also a gateway to the Murray Valley and Riverland regions of South Australia. There the climate can largely be described as warm to temperate, it needs to be remembered that much of the land around it is semi arid, or desert country. Consequently, the region is prone to hot spells in summer. Winters tend to be mild. Locals claim the Riverland boasts more days of sunshine per year than the Gold Coast.
