The cottage is fully furnished and equipped, offering self-catering accommodation for overnight or short breaks. District operators offer underground mine tours, gold fossicking, family history research, metal detecting, mini golf, arts and crafts, collectables, bush walks, museums, berry farm.

Driving directions: from Bathurst travel via Sofala or Turondale (the locals preferred route), or the Bridle Track. Note that caravans or trailers are not permitted on the Bridle Track. Various camping spots abound.

Once at the cottage, stroll to the "CBD" - the pub and the shop! - in only 5-10 minutes.

Guest Reviews

  • "This little cottage was absolutely perfect for us as a small family with pets. It was very cosy and had everything we needed. Hill End was a fantastic place to stumble across and made all the more perfect because of Cookes Cottage. "

  • "A charming cottage set on the edge of the township which means that kangaroos visit the garden and birdlife abounds. Excellent facilities. Sitting in the garden or on the veranda in the early morning, surrounded by the bush in autumnal colours was a world away from the hectic city life."
    Stephen, May 2009

  • "Cottage was well appointed and cozy all the things you need to relax and unwind. We suggest some unclorinated drinking water?"
    Belinda, May 2009

  • "This was exactly what I was looking for. My Scottish visitors wanted to have a "life in the bush experience". Cookes Cottage and the Hillend/Saffala area fitted the bill perfectly. "

  • "WE spent a fabulous weekend at this cosy country cottage. Magnificent gardens smothered in rose bushes, comfortable with incredible attention to detail and very well provisioned. Walking distance to the tiny town and pub. Incredibly peaceful. We are now devotees."

  • "A lovely old cottage within walking distance of the town. We were there in winter (huge frost!!) and the cottage was well provided with heaters as well as an open fire (firewood supplied) The decor was tasteful and very comfortable we hope to book again (in the longterm) when overseas visitors come for to stay. The road into Hill End was a bit rough but we made it without too much wear on our sedan car we just had to take our time."
