Put your finger on the cultural pulse of Bali in Ubud

Ubud is where you go to experience Balinese culture at its fullest, from traditional dances to Hindu temples. You won't find all those crowded bars and beaches in these Bali uplands where Ubud vacation rentals are located, but you will find vibrant villages packed to the brim with nifty Indonesian art galleries, ancient shrines and spectacular wildlife. From a jungle temple overrun with adorable and entertaining monkeys to primitive yet utterly impressive stone carvings, you will wonder how you ever considered any other place than Ubud for a Bali vacation.

Things to do

The Macaque Sanctuary is more fun than a barrel of monkeys

If you can't decide whether to tour a temple or a zoo, definitely go to the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, an ornate Hindu temple that's famous for the macaques who've made their home there. And if that's not the coolest thing, you can also see the intricate carvings at Goa Gajah (the Elephant Cave) and 11th-century shrines at Gunung Kawi. And you'll really feel Ubud's ancient and sacred history when you see a ceremony or dance at the palace Puri Saren Agung. The nearby Moon of Pejeng is a sacred site displaying the world's largest single-cast bronze kettle drum from 300 BC.

Activities

Upland Ubud's an uber-awesome place for art and culture

With dozens of museums, temples and sacred shrines to explore, you can really get your culture on in Ubud. This area simply explodes with Indonesian culture and art, and there are plenty of ways to take the magic home with you with souvenirs and artisan specialities at Ubud's street and art markets. And of course, your taste buds will dance at the Balinese delights you'll experience in Ubud's excellent restaurants. Bali's famous blissful beaches are only about 15 km from most Ubud vacation rentals, so whether you like swimming, surfing, boating or snorkelling, you're good to go.

Weather

Pack light because you'll literally get hot under the collar

Ubud's just slightly south of the equator, so as you can deduce, this is a literal tropical hot spot and it's almost always humid. So slap on that sunscreen because temperatures average in the upper 20s for most of the year. Ubud is a bit higher in elevation than the rest of Bali, so it's a little cooler than the coast. Monsoon winds give Bali its distinctive wet and dry seasons, with rain likely from November to March. The driest months are May to September, and epic waves grace the western coast at this time if you're here to surf.

Natural highlights

Birds in their little nests agree: Ubud has awesome wildlife

All around Ubud vacation rentals, you can revel in the impossibly lush and lovely farms and rice paddies, and thick tropical forests with tons of wildlife. You can see hundreds of macaque monkeys at the Sacred Monkey Sanctuary. And bird lovers can flap their feathers in delight over the hundreds of cool birds they can observe here, from the Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker to the red-beaked Javan Kingfisher. At the nearby beaches, you can grab a snorkel to admire the equally colourful marine life below the water too, from brilliant fish to beautiful sea turtles.
