Culture-seeker? You might have met your matcha in Kyoto

Say 'konnichiwa' to 1 of the most Instagrammable cities in the world. Kyoto was the capital of imperial Japan for more than 1,000 years, and there's nowhere else like it. Nestled among the ultra-modern city, you'll find traditional 'machiya' townhouses, historic districts, and more shrines, temples and palaces than you can shake a cherry tree at. Kyoto vacation rentals are about soaking it all in, enjoying the festivals, drinking matcha tea and experiencing the Japanese bath houses, and that's before we get onto the world-class eateries and unique nightlife. We'll raise a glass of sake to that – 'kanpai'!

Things to do

Where UNESCO goes, the travellers will follow

With 14 UNESCO World Heritage Sites within city limits, the only problem you'll have in Kyoto is fitting it all in. There are literally thousands of temples and shrines, with the sprawling and beautiful complex of Fushimi Inari-Taisha and the 'Golden Pavilion' of Kinkaku-ji among the favourites. Kyoto's famous for its parks and trees, and among the most famous is the Imperial Park. While you're there, you might want to book onto a tour of 1 of the imperial palaces. And if it's museums you're after, then you've got a vast selection covering everything from art and manga to trains and toys.

Kyoto's activities will be samu-right up your street

Better get reading up on your Japanese culture, because Kyoto vacation rentals are an opportunity to really immerse yourself in Japan. With its many traditional festivals and customs, a good starting point might be to take yourself down to an 'onsen', or traditional bath house. It's 1 of the most quintessential Japanese experiences, though bear in mind most require you to leave your underwear behind in the locker. Another way to soak up the culture is by indulging in Kyoto's nightlife and exquisite dining, and you might even find yourself inspired to take a Japanese cooking class.

In springtime, the only pretty ring time

If there's 1 season when everyone wants to book their Kyoto vacation rentals, it's in the spring, when the cherry and plum blossom transforms the city. April and early May is your window for this, though it's worth knowing that flights and accommodation costs get a lot steeper during cherry blossom time. Summers in Kyoto can get pretty hot and humid, and June/July can be a bit wet. Winters, on the other hand, are quite chilly, with snow from time to time. One of the best times to visit is autumn, with mild weather, lovely colours in the trees and lower rates than springtime.

Natural highlights

Kyoto's mountain vistas are the cherry on top

Small is beautiful – at least that's Kyoto's motto. Despite its fame and status as a former capital, it's more compact than many other Japanese cities. Kyoto's set in the central part of Honshu, Japan's biggest and most populous island. The city's a mix of ancient and modern, where modern steel and glass buildings rub shoulders with vast, manicured parks and traditional houses. It's set in a valley surrounded by forested mountains, some of them containing temple complexes like Enryaku-ji. Kyoto's famous for its cherry and plum trees, which are celebrated in the springtime with the 'hanami' cherry blossom festival.
