About this property
Large farmhouse with valley views in rural setting
General Follions is a substantial late-1800s stone-built traditional Northumberland farmhouse located just outside Thropton and Rothbury close to Morpeth, Alnwick and the Northumberland coast including Holy Island. This home from home has been lovingly renovated retaining many original features and a country charisma.
Follions has five bedrooms and two bathrooms on the upper floor. 2x King size beds (5'), 1x Queen size (4'6") and 4x Single (3') beds. In total, Follions sleeps ten guests in 7 beds. There is also a cot, high chair, stair and door gates available for use by guests. Dogs (up to 3) are more than welcome to stay (£50 charge per booking).
Details Follions has five spacious bedrooms serviced by two bathrooms and a WC suitable for up to ten guests and three dogs. The house has a large private garden and private off-road parking for four cars.
The dining room has a large dining table which comfortably seats ten diners. The well-equipped kitchen has an oil-fired range, separate integratedelectric oven and hob, toaster, bread maker, electric frying pan, slow cooker, and a Nespresso coffee pod machine (pods, not Vertuo) and milk frother in kitchen. Due to the design of the kitchen thereis no dishwasher
A travel cot with mattress (no bedding provided), high chair and stairs gates are also available for use (at no charge). Guests have full access to the garden with a trampoline, play house and picnic benches. There are also apple trees, strawberry runners and raspberry bushes to enjoy in season. Up to 3 dogs welcome (please bring your own bedding and bowls). Please remember to include that a pet will be joining you in your booking information so that we can invoice you accordingly.
The farmhouse is adjacent to a small working sheep farm. So long as you can cope with the odd sheep's bleat and the sound of the farmer's quadbike doing the rounds in the morning, then that is all you know of the farm next door. Guests are not permitted to enter the farm buildings or areas of the working farm - this is for your own safety (farms are dangerous places!) and to allow the farmer (who does not own the farmhouse) to carry out his busy duties of running his farm.
Location The property is located five miles from the nearest town (Rothbury) which has a mini-market (Co-Op) and a selection of pubs and restaurants. Slightly closer to hand is a charming village (Thropton) with two good pubs (of which one serves exceptionally good food).

Wonderful house, stunning views and great set up for young children
We had a fantastic stay at Follions. What a location with the most amazing view. The house is beautiful with large rooms, equipped with everything you need and makes you feel at home. The facilities for young kids were ideal- cot, high chair, games, trampoline, outdoor play house etc.
Only comments would be lack of dishwasher was not ideal (but we knew this on booking) and that 5 pm checking is late when travelling with young family.
Overall we loved our stay and will be coming back. :-)
Such a beautiful Farmhouse!
It has that warm homely feel as soon as you walk in!
Through out the house it has been tastefully decorated and what ever window you look through the views are amazing.
Richard the host is a very friendly and helpful person and nothings a bother with him.
The beds are really comfortable. The kitchen has everything you need. I can’t recommend enough and we will definitely be back.
Really stunning modern property and ideal for a family get together. Would definitely recommend. Very clean and lovely comfy beds.
Beware of the potholes!! The roads leading to the property are very poor.
A more generous supply of toilet roll, firewood and kitchen essentials (oil, salt, pepper) would have been appreciated.
Great location, nice spacious rooms. Decided last minute not to take dogs with us, as learned a few days before they couldnt come upstairs. Also small fee jumped from 50 on website to 75 in message. Lots of rules, fair enough, but dont need to be told everyday to get out by 10am. Excellent communication, easy check in etc, but nothing to make guests feel welcome.
Richard was a great host though there were quite a lot of strict rules sent before fhe stay and during which made us feel a bit on edge! Felt a bit like someone had let us stay in their home rather than we were paying guests. But the house is immaculate and grand so I can see why care is needed.
The area is very quiet and theres not alot in the nighbouring towns. Probably Alnwick a 15-20 min drive away is your biggest town. You need to be self carering but kitchens well equipped.
Comfortable stay. Host communication excellent and quick. Very clean.
Beautiful property. Lots of space indoors and outdoors to relax.
The surrounding area is stunning, with expansive views of the rolling countryside. The only sounds are birdsong and the very occasional car!
The only downside of the property( which had been flagged-up by the owner) was the lack of dishwasher.
As a group of 10, staying for 3 mights, there was a substantial amount of time spent washing and sorting crockery and cutlery! This time could have been better spent catching up, exploring or walking!
That aside. We would all happily return!
This beautiful farmhouse was ideal for a fabulous family weekend. Large but still homely and so clean throughout.

Liked: Communication, location
Follions
Follions has some great features but is let down by a couple of things:
Pros: great location for accessing Northumberland coast and other attractions
Enclosed garden
Trampoline
Parking
Spacious rooms
Three bathrooms
Cons:
No outdoor seating apart from picnic benches( not the best for us oldies)
Poorly laid out kitchen ie fridge freezer in utility area
No dishwasher combined with lack of worktop space near sink made washing dishes for a party of nine very difficult
With a little tweaking, Follions would be perfect!
Location was excellent.
Central for touring Northumberland.
Good parking facilities.
Plenty of wildlife.
WiFi was not consistent.
Telephone landline inconsistent.
Very poor reception for mobile phones.
We so looked forward to our first trip away together as a family since Dec 2019 and Follions was all we needed and more. The garden is delightful, the rooms so spacious and light and the views all great. Having 2 supermarket deliveries meant we didn’t need to shop at all. Lots of places for day trips (hikes, quiet beaches) but perhaps our best day was spent just at the house relaxing!
We have just returned from a fantastic week in Northumberland. Follions is a gorgeous house with a great garden perfect for the kids to play. The house was really well stocked with everything we needed and lots to see and do in the surrounding area. I would definitley recommend!
My family and I had an excellent stay at Follions. The house is an excellent size with everything we required and great for our family get-together. The location is perfect, being close to nearby villages but also very secluded. Richard and Julie were excellent hosts who were responsive to my questions. The house is well set up for kids with toys, books, dvds and excellent hide and seek spots!
We had a great stay at Follions. Excellent communication from the owner meant arrival was easy which was much appreciated after a whole day in the car. The property is beautiful with loads of space and really comfy beds. The kitchen is well equipped and I really enjoyed watching the birds feeding in the garden. Great location, lovely and peaceful with stunning views but within easy reach of lots of visitor attractions. We visited Alnwick for the castle, gardens and the excellent Bater Books. We also drove to Holy Island, Cragside and Bamburgh Castle.
An excellent property- highly recommended.
