About this property

Dog friendly, characterful, Derbyshire Dales/Peak District National Park, sleep4

17 The Lanes, a sympathetically refurbished ex minders cottage, provides character with modern conveniences. The cottage itself offers a comfortable size lounge with log burner (initial basket of logs provided), free WiFi, Freeview TV with built in DVD player, Netflix and a selection of DVD’s, games and books. It has a well fitted kitchen and a pretty, peaceful and secure garden ideal for relaxing with a glass of wine or local beer. The cottage sleeps four with a king size bed in the master bedroom and a twin room. Dog friendly with fabulous walking and cycling from the door step. Maps and walking books are also provided. Operating as a holiday cottage since 2019 we have over 180 excellent reviews.
Situated in Bolehill, a conservation area a short walk from Wirksworth centre and close to Matlock, it is superbly situated for exploring the delights of the Derbyshire Dales and the Peak District.
Dogs are very welcome but we do ask that they are not allowed on the furniture or beds.
Parking is available at the cottage for two vehicles.
Please note that the cottage is built into a hillside so that the garden is accessed from the first floor across a small footbridge. The door into the garden is at the top of the stairs and there is a quite steep step out of the door and then 4 more steps to the garden. There are drops to retain two sides of the garden from the cottage but these are well fenced with fencing approximately 3'6" high. It is not suitable for wheel chair access.
Wirksworth is a small market town on the edge of the Peak District. There is fabulous walking and cycling from the doorstep. This is a perfect location for enjoying all sorts of outdoor activities or just to use as a base to explore the area. Matlock, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Haddon Hall and Chatsworth are all within very easy reach and Carsington Water is only a couple of miles away.
The high peak trail is on our doorstep along with glorious walking and cycling. There is also secure storage for bikes or other sports equipment in a garden store.
Wirksworth punches well above its small size in terms of its thriving community and many activities. The town’s welcome sign proclaims it the ‘gem of the peak’ and its not wrong.

Superb - highly recommended
We stayed at The Lanes as we were attending a family wedding nearby at Haarlem Mill. It totally exceeded expectations. Firstly, and very importantly for me, it was absolutely spotlessly clean. I am extremely sensitive to dust and so typically staying anywhere away, my dust allergy will be set off. Absolutely no issue at The Lanes as everything was beautifully clean. The kitchen is extremely well equipped with really well chosen china and glasses. Thoughtful welcome basket items were really appreciated too. The beds are very comfortable with very nice linen, and plenty of towels. The bathroom is very nice, with a very good shower. All in all, we all enjoyed our stay immensely, and only wished we could stay for longer. I would highly recommend The Lanes to anyone visiting the area, and will definitely be re-booking ourselves for an adventure in the Peak District. Many thanks Sue for a super stay.

Wonderful comfy and cozy cottage
Wonderful 3 day stay in a lovely superbly renovated cottage. Everything was provided and it was very comfortable and cozy. The rainfall shower was superb, the bed was comfy but the highlight was coming back after a days walking was the log fire. Perfect location for all the beauty the peak dustrict has to offer. It is a tad hilly around the village but nothing too hard. The host maintained great communication from start to finish and the personal touches were lovely. We would feinitely recommend the Lanes.

Cosy retreat!
Absolutely lovely, so idyllic and cosy. Sue was super helpful and we loved the welcome hamper too thank you so much. The dogs loved their biscuits and enjoyed the beautiful walks this area has to offer. Getting cosy after a long day walking with the fire and a film was just what we needed. Will definitely be returning :)

About the host

The property is owned by myself Sue and my husband Richard. We really enjoy walking and exploring the Peak District with our three dogs and wanted a holiday cottage to share this area with others. On a day to day basis the cottage is managed by me and I am happy to help with any queries you may have. We want to give our guests a real home from home experience.
The cottage is well equipped with maps and there is an information booklet about the area and things to do and see, along with games and DVD's for any time spent by the fire. We have also put together walk routes for a number of our favourite 'walks from the door' for you to use.

Why they chose this property

We have been thoroughly charmed by Wirksworth, so much so that we now live here. It is a small market town but punches well above its weight in terms of activities throughout the year. It has a village feel but with plenty of pubs, cafes and small independent shops along with a regular market. It is positioned in the Derbyshire Dales on the edge of the Peak District National Park so the walking and cycling is heavenly and it is well placed for exploring both areas.

What makes this property unique

17 The Lanes is an ex miners cottage and is wonderfully characterful, there is not a straight wall or a recognised angle in the place. It is set on a hillside above Wirksworth in Bolehill, now a conservation area.
