All 10 of us had a lovely holiday (5 adults and 5 children.) Beautiful setting, gorgeous views and countryside. Local butchers and post office. We were lucky to be there for the village carnival, so much fun, just like stepping back in time. Terence and Imelda were great hosts, Imelda baked 2 delicious chocolate cakes for us during our stay. Lots of room for us all, My husband and I stayed in the cottage which was comfortable.
Absolutely wonderful stay here, spiral staircase a bit daunting but soon got used to it.A lovely welcome cake which was enjoyed by all. Thank you for your hospitality.
Lovely property for our large group, VRBO hiccup caused stress, spiral stairs not 4 everyone
Our family of 9 (6 seniors, myself, + 2 children) stayed at this lovely property. Plenty of rooms/beds to accommodate a large group. 1 bedroom is separate, a studio apartment adjacent. The house had everything you could need. Well stocked with bedding, kitchen items, appliances. Heating was on so we never felt cold. Garden to enjoy meals/sunsets. Quiet neighborhood. The hosts were easy to reach and friendly and also kind enough to bring us a welcome cake! Did not explore too much on foot. It's short drive to Matlock and Matlock bath. We enjoyed the area and found it safe and relaxing.
Only access to the kitchen/dining area/garden are down spiral stairs. I underestimated how much of an issue this was for the elder folks, who felt the stairs were daunting/dangerous. If you have children or elder folks you may want to consider another property.
That there was a hiccup with VRBO where they never sent me any sort of reminder about the second payment. I made the initial booking, paid the deposit, then days before our stay (months after booking) I was sent emails from VRBO with check-in and property info. I thought we were set. The owner came one morning while I was asleep, demanded to speak to me immediately and was quite irate that the second payment hadn't been made. I was unaware since I'd never received any email. The host initiated a request for 2nd payment. I got the message and sent payment then and there. Could have been addressed in a calm, friendly manner instead, IMO.
Great value property in good location just outside Peaks
Very helpful owner who brought us cake! The property has everything you need for a group of friends, with 9-10 separate beds. Downside is it is bit cramped - particularly the kitchen and the narrow spiral staircase. But for the price it's great and we'll probably go again.

Nice house but a very tired garden also the stairs to the kitchen are shocking & unsafe for young kiddies to walk down also the older generation as very steep very tight very poor design but a nice location but I’d certainly change the stairs as we wouldn’t return purely for that factor
We rented the property for a reunion of 8 women friends over 60 as it provided enough bed space to spread out. It was ideal and we had plenty of laughs going up and down the spiral staircase, some of us with creaking joints! The owners were very helpful and we enjoyed Imelda's chocolate cake. Only thing missing was a folder of instructions for the use of the equipment and numbers such as local doctors etc, and we'd have liked a visitors book to write in.

Girls walking weekend.
Excellent location we could begin our walks directly from the property. Everyone commented that the beds were very comfortable and the lounge had plenty of sofas enough for everyone.
The stairs to the kitchen and dining room were a bit steep for some of the older members of our party, but the dinning area was spacious for us to eat in. Good value for money and would recommend.
The main property is on three levels with a spiral staircase between the bottom floor and the middle floor and a more conventional staircase to the bedroom on the upper floor. The lounge is on the middle floor and the kitchen and dining room on the bottom floor. This did not cause our group of 5 adults, aged between 35 and 67 years, and 5 children aged 7 to 10 years. I think the children enjoyed the novelty.
The place is very well equiped with cutlery, crockery, kitchen utensils and pots and pans. The big dining table could seat 10 comfortably and there was also a small table for 2 or 3.
The cottage, which sleeps 2, is completely separate, also well equiped, and the entrance is not in the same courtyard but is 20 metres up the road from the main gate. This splits the family up but meant that the oldest member could have some peace and quiet.
This is a great place to stay with lovely walks in the valley along the canal and past all kinds of industrial heritage, old mills etc. Much more is in easy reach by car. The property itself has a quirky layout which makes it feels even larger than it is - and means big groups can comfortably enjoy the space without feeling crowded. Great value too.
Very interesting and quirky house. Great views over the valley and would be a lovely spot for walking from. We visited for a family wedding where we needed space for a large group. We were out most of the time, hosts couldn’t do enough for us and also baked a delicious cake on arrival. The spiral staircase is narrow and quite steep. My only criticism would be that the house was cold when we arrived and didn’t really warm up until the following day. I suspect it had been unoccupied for a while with the heating being off/low prior to our booking.
I stayed with 8 of my friends to celebrate a belated 50th birthday delayed due to the pandemic.
We had everything we needed to enjoy a weekend with friends going on a local walk using the local pub very friendly and just relaxing in the peaceful countryside. Would also like to say a big thank you to the owners whom had baked us a beautiful chocolate cake very much appreciated.
We had a great stay here . There was 10 of us staying & there was plenty of space
The hosts were very kind & the freshly baked cake went down a treat
Alton towers is about a 50 minute drive from the property
Would definitely stay again
Property worked well for us with 4 different households, one of which had a baby and a toddler, so downstairs rooms very useful. Also cottage was seperate. Spiral stairs were a little challenging especially taking children down. Overall we really enjoyed our stay. Good location and handy shop close by. Very good pub in next village
The Old Mill was the perfect size for 14 of us (grandparents, two families, unmarried daughter and boyfriend). The facilities and equipment are ample and generous. The lounge is a lovely room for everyone to come together. There are flowers everywhere outside the property, which is attractively built in local stone, and apparently goes back to 1790. The one tricky feature is the original mill spiral staircase, but you soon get used to it. There's a lot of history locally - I hadn't realized that Florence Nightingale's home was literally opposite the end of our road; and the Arkwright miles are just a couple of miles away - but you're close to lots of key attractions, which the green, lush Derbyshire countryside hides away in the background very effectively. All of us, from 3 years old to 73, had a brilliant time, and the care and pride of the owners in their property contributed significantly to that. (As did the homemade chocolate cake which they presented us with...!)
We had a great time at The Old Mill and Cottage. Terrence and Imelda were lovely hosts, they even baked us a welcome cake. The place itself was nice and clean and had everything you would need for a comfortable stay.
Great local walks and not far from Matlock Baths.
I'd never been to Matlock before. It's a great place, steeped in history and lush natural landscaping.
Terence is a great host, gave good information about the area and once we'd checked in, he left us to it. Although he was very friendly and approachable, so if we did need anything I'm sure he would have been happy to assist.
The property is ideally located and quirky in a good way, being an old mill. Well suited to young families and older parties alike. It was easy to make cosy in the evenings.
I would definitely recommend and might even be back for another visit, as still plenty to explore around the area.
Cheers Terence and Imelda!
Beautiful house in a beautiful location, the house and cottage were very well equipped, there was nothing we couldn’t find that we needed 😃 the owners were very good, let you get on with things but were there if you needed them and Imelda baked us a fantastic chocolate fudge cake 😋 such a nice touch, we would definitely stay here again and definitely recommend to anyone else 👍🏼 Thanks Terence and Imelda ❤️
