About this property
The Cottage Gite. A 150 year old cosy stone cottage with in ground pool.
The Cottage is an old stone building set in a rural location in the Charente region of France, in between Poitiers and Angoulême in the South West of France. It was restored 6 years ago and was used as a family holiday home. It shares the large space with the owner's converted barn. The climate of the Charente is one of the mildest in France. The region gets 40% more hours of sunshine than in the U.K.
The Cottage has its own private terrace which can be used for sitting, evenings drinks and barbecues. It is a traditional cottage of the region and has very thick stone walls, keeping it cool in the summer. When we renovated the Cottage, we used it as our holiday home for 4 years before moving into the Barn. It was never designed to be 'just' a holiday rental with the cheapest of furniture, decoration and equipment.
There is a large garden which guests can use and there is a private pool. We have parking on the drive immediately outside the Cottage.
As a traditional house of the time, it probably never had 2 storeys. We have no idea when the upstairs was added (long before us!). This means that the ceilings upstairs are lower than normal. There are 3 double bedrooms. One larger and 2 that are very comfortable if smaller. There is a bathroom with toilet and shower.
The kitchen, dining and living room are one long space and the end of which is a log burning stove. Winter has always been one of our favourite times to use the Cottage with a blazing fire, a good book and some good food and wine. The kitchen is well-equipped with a 6 ring stove and electric oven. There is a fridge-freezer and washing machine and access to a tumble dryer.
It has always been a family holiday home, and we think it still has that feel to it. Friends who have stayed here describe it as cosy, friendly and charming. We are very proud of it.

About the host
Hosted by John Hadlow

We have been in education all our working lives. We have now moved to France to start a new adventure. John has retrained to be a professional cook. We have loved renting out our cottage and have met some lovely people. It is a real pleasure to share what we love about France and especially or region of the Charente with other people.
Why they chose this property
John and Jane bought the Barn and the Cottage 5 years ago. We have been using the Cottage as a holiday home while renovating the Barn. The Barn is now finished and we have decided to rent our lovely cottage as a gite for guests. We really loved it while we were there and had many good times with friends and family. It is a friendly, warm and comfortable space. This area of France is not very tourist driven region. It feels very authentic. The weather is lovely during the summer and the countryside is green. During July and August the sunflowers come out. There are hundreds of fields planted with millions of sunflowers and it is amazing when they all come out.
What makes this property unique
The Cottage and our Barn sit in a large garden. We have a new 12x5m in-ground pool. The Cottage has its own private terrace and guests are free to play or sit in the large garden and enjoy the hammocks.
The Cottage was never equipped as a cheap rental property. We used it for years and everything is good quality. For example, John hates it when he rents somewhere and the kitchen is ill-quipped, the knives blunt and not enough saucepans. Our kitchen is not like this!
The Cottage has a lovely feel to it. Thick stone walls keep in cool in summer. The wood burning fire is great on winter evenings. You can barbecue on the terrace while having a glass of rose from our local wine and cognac producer in the same village. We are nearly always there to give advice on local activities such as markets, brocantes, restaurants and places to visit.
We have recently upgraded the wifi in the Cottage and we are now getting around 30 - 50Mbs
