A mixed bag
Firstly, context. My friends and I have made many trips of this kind around different parts of the UK over a number of years.
It was surprising then to check in and find no property folder or local information beyond a few flyers. This caused challenges through the stay, from the trip switch tripping ovens to the need to avoid storing our fruit in the fruit bowls (due to historical problems with fruitflies).
The house is big enough for 6 children and 6 adults with living space that was accurately described in the advert for the ground floor. There is a gas barbecue but we were instructed we should top up the bottle after using it. We couldn’t be sure if we would be topping up from nearly full, nearly empty etc so sadly we gave that a miss. The main sticking point for the ground floor however, is one the solitary opening window on the ground floor (in the kitchen). This makes it very warm in even vaguely warm weather. The French doors in the living space both open, but the road outside (A16) is a very busy, national speed limit road and is therefore extremely noisy. To further highlight this, in the upper bedrooms to the front, it was difficult to sleep with the window open beyond 530am.
Both bathrooms are a problem. The first the shower wouldn’t always work when you tried to start it. After 5 days we established that if you ran a bath tap it would seemingly kickstart the shower. This bathroom drew on a noisy water pump in the upstairs cupboard which seemed to be going on even when we weren’t drawing water (even at night!). When we raised this issue we were advised this was because the water system was also connected to a container unit next door that a family member was living in. They reassured us they had been advised NOT to draw water after 9pm. The second bathroom has no lock on the door (not ideal when you’re staying with non-family members!) but has a shower that was so sensitive it would shift from cool to very hot in a millimetre. It became clear this was not suitable to use safely, especially with children. Thus rendering 12 people sharing 1 shower.
In the interests of balance, the owner raised a query about one of our party plugging in his Hybrid car for a few hours each night and once it was established that we weren’t leeching 300miles of range over 24 hours, they were very reasonable.
In summary, this a curiously plumbed property in a good location for Boston, Skegness and Lincoln. Some changes needed...
