About this property

Ottertail Lake, MN cabin with 3 Bedroom, Sleeps 6

Wonderful Cape Cod style cabin on one of Minnesota's premier lakes! Great for boating and fishing or relaxing on the sandy beach. This cabin features full panoramic lake view with windows across the front and sides for excellent ventilation. Finished in knotty pine, the interior of this 1060 square foot cabin has 3 bedrooms; 2 king beds, 1 queen bed and a daybed with 2 twins. We provide the bed linens and kitchen towels. PLEASE NOTE: BATH AND BEACH TOWELS ARE NOT PROVIDED. We rent Sunday to Sunday.

There is a full kitchen furnished with almost everything you'd have at home; with a full stainless fridge, oven, microwave, dishes, Calphalon pots and pans, cups, mugs, glasses, rice cooker, crock pots, mixer, cutting boards, pizza pan, griddle, bowls, platters, roaster, steamer, knife block, silverware, coffee pot and 4 slice toaster. The bathroom is small but has a shower. We have a stainless oven and vent hood. We have vinyl flooring in the kitchen and bathroom and upgraded our main cabin AC unit to a 12,000 btu unit. We have comforters all the bedrooms. We also added a 3 in memory foam topper to the king and queen main cabin beds. We have a very comfortable couch and love seat as well.

There is a large flat panel TV with DVD player and many family friendly movies to watch. We have a PS2 video game counsel with games . There is a good size kitchen table with extra leaf. There is a 6 seat deck table available for your use. A comfortable couch, loveseat and pine wood and leather rockers are found in the large living room.

There is a Weber gas grill out back for grilling your fresh caught fish, steaks, burgers, hot dogs or chicken. The large spacious deck has wrap around seating and a wooden table that seats 6. The wooded lot is set back and deep with wonderful shade and great places for yard games.

We have the largest beach in the area at 125 feet of sandy beach and you can walk out in the lake for over several hundred yards without going over your head. There is a 45 foot long dock and 2400 pound lift available for your use. Our personal Pontoon and boats are not for rent and do not go with cabin rental, but we have found reasonable rentals on kayaks, paddle boards and pontoons. A fire ring with ample FREE woodpile allows for great lakeside bonfires at night. OtterTail Lake is one of Minnesota's premier Walleye fishing lakes at 13,728 acres (21 sq miles). It boasts holes of 75, 90 and 120 feet deep and many flats and drop offs for excellent fishing and boating. There are gorgeous sunrises and beautiful moon rises and the many local loons will sing you to sleep at night. There is more lake shore in Otter Tail County than any other state in the nation with all of the other excellent local lakes. Bring your own or rent local boats, pontoons, jet skis and Kayaks. Fishing Guide services are available in the area. Again, our personal pontoon and boats are not for rent and do not go with the cabin rental.

You can golf at one of the numerous courses in the area including the Thumper Pond and Balmoral courses on the other side of the lake. You can shop at any of the quaint local shops in OtterTail City or within 20 minutes to Perham or Battle Lake. This is a great deal for this 3 bedroom cabin . Eight people in one cabin!

Jon and I brought our daughter and her family to Ottertail Lake to build on the foundation of loving lake life that we had grown up with. Although we were first concerned with the road dividing us from the lake, we found that to be very workable....a learning experience for the children and very considerate drivers. Randy did his best to make sure there were provisions (kitchen supplies, cleaning supplies, playing supplies, etc.) and concern for our safety. The kitchen was so very well supplied. The living room offered great comfort, the bedrooms gave great sleeping with fresh air and the sounds of the lake. The front deck was a joy for evenings, the fire pit was wonderful for roasted hot dogs and s’mores! The beach was most awesome, the boat lift worked great, the yard afforded plenty of play area for the children, the neighbors were very welcoming, the bridge on the river provided wonderful fishing for our 10 and 6 year old, giving them many beautiful memories of MN lake life. Thank you, Randy!

Great location on the lake with plenty of room for everyone to unwind both inside and out. We liked the up North feel to the area and the cabin location has some great history you will find out if you have a chat with Randy or the neighbors. We enjoyed our stay up North but definitely had some interesting discussions with Randy prior to. About 4 weeks prior to our arrival Randy sent a message about a cleaning fee due and a system booking error that is costing him a night of income loss. We decided to pay the optional cleaning fee in good faith to offset the system error causing loss of income. Upon arrival we were surprised to see that the roof of the cabin had a tarp on it never mentioned in any conversations with Randy, we were told it was used to cover storm damage from the previous year. Randy also told us that we could not use the shower for 24 hours as he had attempted to fix a shower leak. Yes the bathroom was indeed small and though it wasn't our main hangout the continued leaking shower was frustrating every time someone showered it made for a lot of sock changes. The host was notified of the continued leak and also concerns for the leaking kitchen faucet as well with evidence of leaking for quite some time. I also had to get cleaning solution out of fridge before use. The fishing on Ottertail lake, Walker Lake and neighboring lakes was successful and we had so much fried fish that we ended up sharing with a couple of the neighbors. We did unfortunately have a problem middle of the week, we brought our own mid size fishing boat and used the lift provided by the Randy. We had put our boat on the lift after fishing one night, the next day was very windy on the lake so we didn't use the boat. When we went down to check on it we saw that there was a bent piece on the lift so we took a photo and contacted Randy; we received No response, very disappointing. After we got home we were notified that there would be a charge through VRBO for damages, I take no issue with that as it states in the contract but we did have damage insurance and could have filed a claim while there for full damage coverage had Randy responded. Although I feel bad that something while in our care was damaged, I feel worse that there was stress put on us pretrip and what felt like misrepresentation of the property when we arrived based on the host expectations. We would love to visit Ottertail Lake again but will look for other accommodations in the future.

While I appreciate the kind words our guest had to say, I do dispute the negative comments. Starting with their reservations, we only book 7 night stays, Sunday to Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This is noted multiple places in our information on VRBO's website. However, when they booked somehow they were able to book a 6 night stay due to glitch in VRBO's system. I allowed them to do only the 6 night stay and didn't enforce the 7 night minimum policy we have costing us 1 night's stay income. As for the cleaning fee, this was a new policy we began last year due to so many guests leaving our cabin unclean (previously we had a policy of " it's clean when you come, leave it clean when you leave" policy or we charged a cleaning fee). Unfortunately, we felt we needed to add a cleaning fee to our policy and they were the 1st renters after the policy was added. We gave them the choice of cleaning the cabin or paying the fee and they elected to pay the cleaning fee, it was totally their choice. As to the tarp on the roof, they were aware of it being there prior to their arrival per conversations I had with them. We had storm damage and the insurance company put it there to prevent any leaks ( we did not have any). While it looks alittle funky, it does not affect the cabin usage at all. We have contacted over 12 roofing contractors in the area. Of the ones we contacted, only 4 came and gave us a bid and only 1 was willing to give us a time they would come (July 4th week). When we asked for alternate dates, they only had after Labor Day available and told us to contact them late summer for a date. They never responded when we contacted them. After talking to many people in the area, it is noted it is very hard to get any contractor to come do any jobs that were not considered a big job. We are still in the process of getting it done, but there hasn't been any leaks noted. As for the shower leaking, we had just caulked the shower and asked them to wait till the next day to allow the caulk to cure. I only had 4 hours before their coming to do the change over and do the repairs as we noted some water on the floor prior to their coming. It appeared they did not wait for it to cure and the caulk did not hold, hence the water leakage. The kitchen faucet was fully functional and not leaking, but we have high mineral content of our well water so some brown staining was noted at the base of the faucet. After their complaint (they were the only ones who ever complained) the faucet was replaced with a brand new one. As for their damage to our boat lift, their damage deposit only covered $500 of the $750 it cost us to have the lift repaired. They were advised not to tie their boat up to the lift but did so and bent an aluminum support post of the lift. It was their fault for improperly tying up their boat. I did inform them I would be applying the damage fee, but was only able to collect partial repayment for the damage done. I do feel bad they felt stressed, but I had limited time to repair the damage they did. I try very hard to communicate with my guests and give my personal cell number to text or call me with any questions or concerns. Never once did they communicate any complaints to me about the roof. I repaired what they had problems with the faucet and shower and even went above and beyond doing replacement of working items. If they had waited for the caulk to cure the shower would not have been a problem, I had to completely tear out the caulk I had just put in and re-do it all over again adding additional time, expense and stress to an already tight turn over time -table on top of trying to get the boat lift repaired before our next guests. I made every effort to do what I could to make their stay enjoyable, but I guess you can't please everyone, especially if they don't follow some simple requests like waiting for the caulk to cure. We make every effort to have good pictures of our cabin and property and good descriptions our

Great Family Get Away

The property was just as we expected. A true cabin feel! The swing set and tire swing were a big hit with the Grandsons. The beach during the day and the deck at night were great areas where family bonding took place. I know if there wasn't such a drought going on we would have had a blast around the fire ring. The kitchen was stocked to well with everything you would need to cook with. If we ever come back up to that area we would love to stay again!

It was an awesome experience!!!

I loved staying here and so did my family. The lake is right across the street, the rooms are pretty spacious for a cabin the bathroom is small but it is true to the photos and I mean its not like anyone is gonna spend their vacation in the bathroom anyway so it wasn't detrimental to the experience. I couldn't find any fault with it and I am picky as hell. The downside was the darn mosquitos but it's infront of a lake so mosquitos are to be expected. The lake was see through, it was clean so was the beach. All in all if your seeing this book your stay it was awesome.

Lovely spot on Ottertail

We had a great week at this property. Randy was very responsive and helpful. The house is comfortable and the kitchen is well appointed. We used the dock, deck, and beach daily. Our only complaint was the policy of having the prior renter be responsible for cleaning. We left a clean house, but received what I would describe as a "tidy" one. The bathroom and shower in particular had not been cleaned. We'd have happily paid a cleaning fee to arrive at a truly clean house, particularly in the middle of this COVID scare.

Thank you for the kind comments, but I am disappointed that nothing was ever said to me about the bathroom, even when I was there after they came. I gladly would have done what I could have to make it better for her. I always review how the cabin was cleaned by the previous renter and felt it was left very clean. About the only additional thing I could have done was spray bleach cleaner again so it smelled cleaner. The water has a high mineral content, so every 2 weeks a cleaner is used to dissolve the minerals, but this was the off week, so maybe it appeared less. It is hard to please everyone To the fullest extent, but we try and will be more diligent to assess these areas in the future. We also use a antibacterial and antiviral spray on surfaces between renters and use the Microban spray for the bathrooms that is especially potent against Covid 19, killing the virus for up to 3 days.

Nice big deck where we spent the majority of our time when we weren’t fishing. Bedrooms are nice size. The bathroom was a little small and we had a couple of bigger guys that had trouble maneuvering in it. Randy was great to work with and very responsive with questions. The neighbors and neighborhood are nice as well. Thanks again Randy! We really enjoyed our stay at your cabin!

Cozy Relaxing Cabin

We stayed at the cabin over NDEA, October 18-22, for a nice fall get away. It was the perfect size and had all of amenities needed to enjoy our weekend. The yard was perfect for running through the leaves and just enjoying the fall colors. We enjoyed the fire pit and even though it was chilly enjoyed the sandy beach area. We will definitely come again!

Very relaxing vacation.

We rented from Randy for a week this summer. This was our first time renting a vacation home and it was a wonderful experience. When we arrived Randy was there mowing the yard. He welcomed us and gave us a tour of the property. The cabin is very nice and cozy. There was plenty of room for all of us to sleep. The beds were very comfortable. There is a full sized kitchen with everything you could possibly need for cooking and baking. The beach just across the road was very nice for swimming and relaxing. There is no air conditioning, no television (there are tv's for watching movies, but no local channels) and no wifi. So, we were forced to actually enjoy each other and talk with one another. ;) I have 2 teenage boys that actually survived the week and enjoyed our time together without their technology. :) The house stayed very cool with just the windows open, so that was never an issue. Randy was wonderful to work with. He responded to all of my messages within just a few hours. We greatly enjoyed our time here.

The cabin was cozy, quaint and rustic. It was conveniently located near shopping and food.

The cabin provided enough sleeping space for everyone. Randy was great to work with and provided us with his personal contact info in the event we had questions or for emergency purposes. He called to check in on us several times which was appreciated since we were unfamiliar with the cabin. The weather did not cooperate so unfortunately we weren't able to take advantage of the lake.

Disappointed!

Our family has used VRBO for several vacations/getaway's and have always been very satisfied. Generally the descriptions of the properties have matched online vs. seeing it in person. This was not the case for this property. The cabin is much smaller than the pictures make it appear. The only bathroom is very small, the one toilet is a very tight fit. The owner has many personal items also stored inside the property. My wife and her sister spent an hour + cleaning the drawers, pantry and kitchen floor that had a considerable amount of mouse droppings. They also spent some time cleaning out the cobwebs & bugs from the window screens (Some of the screens had large tears & the windows could not be opened). The grill also needed to be cleaned before it could be used. The toilet also backed up 1 time and there was not usable plunger available. We just chose to deal with most of the issues instead of bringing them to the attention of the owner. The one thing that I chose to call the owner on (excess tall weed growth around fire pit). He chose not to return my call. So we took care of that ourselves also. As for the cleaning list the owner leaves for tenants (quite lengthy and many duplicated items). We did not bring in the cushion for the outdoor porch swing (that the owner put out on his own behalf) because it was wet from the rain. It happened to rain while we were out fishing. Sheets were not taken off from two beds because nobody slept in them. Overall it just a frustrating experience for our families. On top of it the owner has refused to refund our full damage deposit.

This renter wrote a bad review because we applied the cleaning fee when they left our cabin filthy dirty. I have pictures as proof. I am disappointed and frustrated as well with a guest that doesn't tell you there are concerns or problems. I was 5 min away during his stay. I stopped by 45 min after he checked in to see if everything was ok and he never complained until 8 days later after we applied the cleaning fee and then threatened to write a bad review unless his fee was returned. His one call, -a tall grass emergency- I did come by within the hour to pull it and he had already done it, so no return call was needed. In our 4 years of renting only 1 other renter did not receive their full refund. We usually try to take care of any problems as soon as we can when we know about them. I can assure you they did not clean anything including drawers, windows or grill. All of our cabinets and drawers, grill etc are cleaned routinely, however this is the country and this is a cabin. Even in the best and newest of homes, pests can come when you least expect them. Mice, spiders, ants are a fact of life in the country. If there was mice, it's because they left food out. We do not charge a cleaning fee. We leave the cabin clean and ask that it is left in the same condition or the cleaning fee will be applied. We send a detailed checklist of items that will need to be done (simple basic things like, sweep/vacuum the floors, shake the rugs, wipe down the appliances, bring in swing cushions, etc.). We ask renters to strip the sheets. They didn't on 3 of 5 beds. How did they sleep the 8 guests on 2 beds? If renters do not want to do the check list and choose to spend their time fishing, as he said he did, the cleaning fee will be applied. It is noted on the VRBO website this is a PRIVATE cabin, not a resort, EVERYTHING is personal that is there. We have extra sheets, blankets, pillows, etc. that are left on site. Our cabin is 1060 sq ft. We post all the pictures VRBO allows us to post so potential renters can get the best view of our cabin. I agree the bathroom is small, but who spends alot of time in the bathroom? The cabin IS open and good sized. The pictures do it justice. You can't fit a king bed in a room that isn't good sized. There is a working plunger at the cabin, but it hasn't backed up before, it makes me wonder what they put down the toilet. Only 1 screen needed repair and has been fixed. All windows have always been fully functional.

My family has owned cabins on this side of OtterTail Lake since 1909 and has a deep love and appreciation for this wonderful lake. This family cabin is our retreat from city life and we look forward to sharing it with you. We have some families who have rented from us for years.

Why they chose this property

This cozy cabin provides a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sleep late and relax or get up early and fish one of MN premier Walleye lakes. We have tried to make this cabin a retreat, a home away from home. The beds are comfortable and inviting. The beach is sandy and you can walk out from shore for 300 yards and not go over your head.

What makes this property unique

This cabin features panoramic lake views with the wall of windows across the front of the cabin and this adds to the excellent ventilation this cabin has. We have the longest stretch of beach in this area of the lake at 125 feet of sandy beach which is excellent for tanning, building sand castles, swimming or being lazy. OtterTail Lake is approximately 5 miles wide and 20 miles long, and at 13,278 acres is easily the largest lake in the area. It features large areas of flat bottoms, steep drop offs, deep holes of 75, 90 and 120 feet and numerous other great places to fish. There is access to Walker Lake through Dead River, a short 100 yards away and more excellent fishing and boating there. This prairie area of Minnesota also is a flyway for many species of ducks, geese, and recently, beautiful long necked white swans and bald eagles have returned to the area. The fall provides beautiful color changes and our family has enjoyed many countryside drives to see the leaves. Many golden eagles are seen in and around the area as well.
