About this property
Enjoy Horses as your neighbors on our 600 Acre Horse/Cattle Farm.
Imagine telling your friends you slept in a BARN! But it is the most luxurious barn you can imagine. This apartment is the former milking parlor and office of a 1940's era dairy barn. The barn is now a horse stables, but don't worry, you will not smell or hear horses from inside the apartment. You will, however, see them through the large windows, and you may stroll through the barn to see them up close, or take a few steps over to their paddocks, where you can pet them, feed them apples and carrots, and watch them play.
This iconic bell-roofed barn is at the center of the farm complex at Wolftrap Farm, where we have six other vacation rental homes and host over 60 weddings each year. We converted the Barn Apartment from being a tack room and lounge area for the stables in the spring of 2017. Watch and feed apples and carrots to the horses in the paddocks outside your front door. Take hikes through the woods, fish in our ponds, meet your neighbors who may be staying at the other homes on the farm, and enjoy the incredible views of our little mountain range and our pastures and woods.
And you may want to bring your bathing suits. In the summer, we have a swimming hole in our creek. For cooler months we have a Party Patio with a hot tub and various patio games, including corn hole. The swimming hole and Party Patio are free. You do need to "reserve" the Party Patio by contacting the owner. You can book it for 1 & 1/2 hours per day of your stay, first come first served.
The farm is super-easy to get to (just one turn off a major U.S. highway and after a mile on our farm road, you are there), and is convenient to Monticello, Montpelier, a half-dozen great wineries (most notably, Barboursville and Early Mountain). We are half-way between Gordonsville and Orange (5 miles to each) where you will find excellent restaurants, grocery stores and anything you need during your visit. There is also plenty of antique shopping and beautiful countryside to drive through.
The farm is also convenient to Monticello, Montpelier, UVA, Skyline Drive, a half dozen excellent wineries, and all the beauty of the countryside around Charlottesville.
Wolftrap Farm has been hosting vacationers since 2004 to rave reviews, and in the past few years has become one of Virginia's most popular farm wedding venues. Come see why.

As a horse lover, this stay was perfect for me. We only had a brief stay, but we enjoyed it!

It was so much fun to stay at the barn apartment with horses right outside the front door. Nice morning and evening walks and a fire pit to enjoy before calling it a day. I would definitely stay again.
Check in was easy as can be and the location is beautiful. The barn apartment was perfect for a quick stay during the Holiday weekend. If you enjoy peace and quiet and rolling pastures full of horses I can’t recommend this enough.
Great experience on this property. We love everything about it from the beautiful mountains to the friendly horses. Truly a hidden gem. We will go back for a longer stay.

Had a great time with the wife in the Barn Apartment. Sitting outside with a cup of coffee and watching the horses in the morning was a nice touch.
The apartment was lovely. It was full of horse related antiques and homey touches. We enjoyed walking the road and petting the horses. I was also thankful that the host was so accommodating. It is a wonderful little slice of heaven!
There for a wedding...but this was an added joy! Beautiful sun rise and horses everywhere! Very convient location as the wedding was on the same property...cozy and comfortable for the one night we stayed.
The property was as advertised. A working horse farm with dozens of horses and beautiful views of the rolling hills in the surrounding countryside. It was fun to walk around the property, including down by the creek and the woods trail. In addition to the horses, there is a cat and a dog that work and live on the farm and you will come across.
The barn apartment had a few bugs, but that is to be expected on a farm.
Pros Real working farm setting. Very peaceful and serene. Very clean and cool temp wise. Cons Wifi wasnnt working and cell reception poor which made self check in difficult. Had to buy more TP and salt touse in the kitchen. Bathroom sink took forever to drain BUT overall, very minor issues. Would rent again.
We had a fabulous time!!!! From driving onto the property to driving off the farm, we were smiling the whole time. We met Paul when we drove up who was gracious and just wonderful. The dogs were so adorable and just loved being the center of our attention. The horses were stunning and friendly. We made dinner and relaxed in a very comfortable bed. In the morning, we had coffee by the firepit while visiting with the horses. We saw the hot tub and game room but there was way too many other wonderful things. Thank you for such an amazing stay! We will be back!!!
Beautiful farm and friendly people. However, the Barn Apartment is listed as having a mobile hotspot and I was unable to connect as there were no available networks that came up in my search for same. In addition, it was stated there was a coffee maker and condiments for same. There was a coffee maker but no filters and no creamer or sweetener so I did without coffeee this a.m.

We provide you with the phone number of our hostesses, who are available to make sure you get a mobile hotspot and to bring you filters, coffee and condiments if you happen to be missing those. Of course we never intend for those items to run out, but human error does happen.

Off to a Bad Start
The property is as described and we enjoyed our stay; however, our check-in did not go well. They asked that we text or call with an ETA and we did. When we got there, the door was open but there was no one around, no instructions on whether or not we needed to check in, and no key to the place. We called and texted the property manager again and got no response. We wanted to leave to go to dinner, but wanted to be able to lock the door behind us as we had an expensive bike and other items in the apartment. We eventual contacted the property owner who provided the lock box code, but we had to change our dinner plans as a result of the delay. Tina, the property manager, came by the next day to apologize; apparently she was in the mountains and had no cell service. All of this could have been avoided with an automated email upon payment explaining the check-in procedure and providing the lock box code. Also, I would recommend a map of the area be available in the apartment. They have text describing the location of many things, but a map would be very helpful.

We usually get very high marks for our "no hassle" check-in procedure. The usual message when guests call is "the door is open and the key is inside." Sorry there was no key inside this time.
With 8 properties and hundreds of bookings each year, occasionally something goes wrong. We apologize and ask for a little grace when that happens.
Apartment was small but suited our needs. Scenery is beautiful. Took long walks with our dog. Easy drive to Charlottesville. Hope to stay again and go wine tasting .
We really enjoyed our stay at this barn attached apartment. It was very clean and well maintained. The atmosphere of the farm setting was relaxing and we were able to pet horses.
What a great spot! Serene setting watching the foals and moms running in a field. Owners and staff responsive and polite. It is in the heart of horse country and vineyards are everywhere.
I recommend on all fronts.
The apartment was very nice. We enjoyed the beautiful horses, the amazing views and exploring the small towns near the area. We traveled about 15 to 20 minutes (South Route 15) to Rhett’s River Grill and Raw Bar in Zion Crossroads. We had an excellent meal. They have a wide selection and we really enjoyed it.
The farm does offer quite a few options for rentals to accomodate every size family. This unit, the Manor House and the Servant’s Quarters are the ones closest to the main barn.
We had a wonderful time. The apartment was just as cute as could be and it felt like home away from home. Sitting outside watching the horses is a memory I will hold onto for a long time:

About the host
Hosted by Keith Cuthrell
This is our family (as of a few years ago, when I could still fly). My wife and I live in Virginia Beach. Our three adult children and their families live in Chesapeake, Nashville and Boston. There are now 6 grandchildren. The farm is a terrific place for all ages. I am a retired business lawyer. We have renovated a number of properties over the years for fun and profit. The farm is definitely the most fun.
Why they chose this property
I was looking for 5 acres and a cabin near the mountains during my mid-life crisis when I was about 50, and I got carried away.
What makes this property unique
Owning the farm is sort of like having your own rural resort. The land itself is gorgeous, with the mountain views, the rolling pastures, the ponds, the woods, etc.
