This area is a haven for wildlife which you are sure to encounter on your journey. Lambton is amongst a row of cottages in Esk Valley which has the most incredible view of the heritage steam railway, as it makes its way through the countryside.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway travels past the cottage on its route between the historic coastal town of Whitby and the market town of Pickering, stopping at beautiful villages along the way, including neighbouring Grosmont, which is just 1 mile away on foot, following the footpath past the engine sheds.

The local village of Grosmont was once a hive of industry due to the discovery of ironstone in 1836 and the row of cottages were built for miners and their families. Now the area is more popular with tourists as many visitors return year after year, falling in love with the scenery, the history and the charm of this picturesque part of Yorkshire.

The owners have lovingly furnished and decorated the cottage throughout, making this a welcoming, beautifully presented holiday home. It still retains is country cottage feel, with lots of character and warmth. At the front of the cottage, the living room enjoys incredible views of the steam train, framed perfectly by the large window. The cottage itself takes its name from one of the steam engines, ’Lambton Colliery No. 29’, built in 1904 and which has been making its journey along the moors since 1969, and can still be seen today passing the cottage, billowing mighty clouds of steam. The cottage was built for the Esk Valley Mine, and the mine can be visited as part of the Land of Iron project. There is an open fire ready to warm you in an evening, as you bask in the glow from the embers after a busy day of exploring, relaxing on the sofas as the night draws in. Out here with little light pollution, on a clear night the amount of stars in the skies are dazzling. The kitchen with dining area is well-equipped so that you can serve up a range of culinary delights if you wish. There is also a downstairs shower room. From the kitchen, the doors lead out to the back of the property, where you have off road private parking as well as a beautiful lawned garden with a fabulous summerhouse, where you can sit out and enjoy the sunshine. Back inside you have two bedrooms upstairs, a master double bedroom as well as a bunk room which has a double bed on the bottom as well as a single bunk on top, making this flexible for families as well as couples. There is also a bathroom with a roll-top bath, surround yourself in bubbles and let time slip away. Your well behaved dogs are welcome to join you as there are so many walking trails to discover.

Grosmont is a picture perfect village, with a pub, railway themed club and a selection of cafés and shops. Following the Rail Trail footpath from the bottom of the street further leads to the hamlet of Beck Hole and then on to the neighbouring village of Goathland, past the Mallyan Spout waterfall. From here you can take the circular route on foot or you can return by steam train, you may recognise the platform as Hogsmeade from the Harry Potter films.

You are also just a 20-minute drive from the historic seaside town of Whitby and the dramatic coastline, including Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes and Sandsend. There are many days out to choose from, including nearby Dalby Forest with cycle and walking trails as well as zip lines through the trees. Thornton-le-Dale or Hutton-le-Hole are quaint, picture perfect villages to explore and for a special treat, the children will love Flamingo Land theme park and zoo. There is also plenty for history lovers, you can search for fossils along the Jurassic coast, discover Captain Cook’s story in one of the nearby museums, visit Helmsley or Pickering castle as well as Whitby or Kirkham Abbey. This is a delightful cottage, ready to welcome you into the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors. Beach 10 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
