About this property

Idyllic 2 bedroom cottage in the Village of Wanlockhead

Dialknowe Holiday Cottage, at first glance is an unassuming holiday cottage sleeping up to 6 people over 2 bedrooms. Please be aware this is a converted miners cottage and some of the bedrooms are in the attic space where there are no doors. It's welcoming and comfortable but what really makes it stand out is the location in the heart of Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland which is only 6 miles from the M74 and only 1 hour from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle. Fantastic views, breath-taking walks and exhilarating hill bike trails which will leave you deeply envious of the locals, who can enjoy them every single day of the year. Wanlockhead is a pretty sleepy village, although really central. The cottage is within walking distance of the Wanlockhead Inn and The Museum of Lead Mining but still incredibly peaceful with amazing views of the hills throughout the day and beautiful clear skies at night. Dialknowe Cottage is suitable for both couples and families or to enjoy with friends. and is available all year round.

Wanlockhead is a captivating mix of hills and charming whitewashed cottages like Dialknowe. It's elevation 1531ft makes it Scotland highest village. The hills aren't only beautiful to look at, they hide lead, gold and other precious stones and minerals which have been mined since Roman times. When walking through the village it's hard to believe the the village was once a very industrial area with visible remnants such as the Beam Engine. The Museum of Lead Mining is a main attraction and you are able to pan for gold and hopefully find your fortune.

The Southern Uplands Way passes through the village and other footpaths lead to the nearby village of Leahills which has a well stocked shop and the Hopetoun Arms Hotel which offers a well varied menu. Other places to explore include Biggar and Moffat which is about half an hours drive from Wanlockhead. Other local attractions include the Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway and Drumlanrig Castle. With good road links Glasgow, Edinburgh and Carlisle are only around an hour away.

Dialknowe Holiday Cottage is a great place to stay if your looking for a summer break away for hillwalking, biking or the magical winter break with snow covered hills.

To Be Avoided
There were issues with obtaining the checkin details in a timely manner. Property only superficially clean set in a not very pleasant location with an appalling access road. The boiler was extremely smelly and there were no instructions for the heating. Towels were totally inadequate in this day and age.

Holiday cottage
Had a lovely time even though it rained didn’t stop us doing things….. They only things I could fault was no mirror in the bathroom…… plus I didn’t think equipment wise the kitchen was equipped for 4 people…..Plus no manuals on how to work the washer/dryer plus microwave…..Also in the other twelve cottages we have stayed in they have always had basic stuff ….. ie salt pepper there was nothing except washing liquid ….. regards Danny

A Very Comfortable Overnight Stay
Having stayed in Wanlockhead for a week at the end of June 2021, this property seemed like an ideal overnight stay during a house move from the the South Coast to Aberdeen. Within easy distance of the M74 and very peaceful. Loved the bold décor. Excellent nights rest , the downstairs bed was very comfortable and the property spotlessly clean.

Great base for exploring local area
We had a lovely stay at this cottage with our 2 kids. Cottage was well stocked with essentials and a nice hot shower. Walks straight from the front door, kids loved exploring the old mining valley.
