The Millgate Cottage is a very unique and quirky 17th-century cottage with a modern contemporary feel. It is located in the heart of the historical and beautiful Georgian market town of Richmond in North Yorkshire and is at the doorstep of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park.
This cozy, historic cottage has many unique characteristics typical of the period, such as wooden beam ceilings, solid flagstone ground floor, and, yes, very steep stairs - the bathroom is on the top floor conveniently next to the bedroom. The property feels spacious with rooms on three different floors, which are furnished in a way to make your stay comfortable and relaxing.
Just a short walk down Millgate road, literally at the corner, is the impressive 11th-century Richmond Castle, whose 950th anniversary is celebrated last year. There is a stunning view of the Richmond waterfalls from the castle and the River Swale, which is also just 5 minutes from the cottage. From the waterfalls, you can turn left and you can take a lovely stroll along the river to the ruins of Easby Abbey, which was founded in 1152 and was a subject of the British artist JMW Turner. Turning right, you will soon reach the National Trusts Hudswell Woods. Another treat on this path is an award-winning pub, the George and Dragon with one of the most beautiful beer gardens in the country.
For a more cultured evening, you could take in a show at the Georgian Theatre Royal, or check what is on at The Station, a community enterprise with live concerts, an art gallery, an artisan café, a local brewery, and a cinema.
There are also several pubs, groceries, independent shops, and cafes to choose from, in and around the market square. There is also a lively local food market here every Saturday.
Please note, as this is a 1700-century cottage the stairs are steep. Therefore, the cottage may not be suitable for those with any mobility issues.

Many thanks for your review Andrew which is really appreciated. Also, thanks for leaving the cottage in such an impeccable state. You are welcome back anytime. Very best wishes, Neil
I was staying over Xmas and was greeted with a warm house, Xmas biscuits and little decorations. It was full of kind touches and the location is superb for walking and exploring It was superbly clean. Can't praise it enough!
We had a lovely stay in this well situated holiday home. It is cosy, clean and has everything you need on the doorstep. The parking was fine, a lovely walk along the river to and from the car park, and a weekly fee that was very reasonable, just be aware of the hill (as flatlanders it took a bit of getting used to!).
The stairs in the cottage are steep but manageable if you have no mobility issues, they are in keeping with the age of the house. The shower was lovely and the bed very comfy.
Overall, we had a great stay in Richmond and explored the surrounding area, returning each afternoon to a comfy, cosy base. Richmond itself is great and you couldn’t stay much closer to the castle!
Great communication with the owner. We would stay again.

Hi Anne,
Many thanks for your review. We're very sorry you had issues opening the windows; this is due to recently having the exterior of the cottage painted which may have made the windows a little difficult to open. This has now been resolved.
We endeavor to keep the cleanliness of the cottage at the highest level we don't actually find the cottage to have a musty smell. Our cleaners work very hard and take great in maintaining the highest cleanliness.
As with many 1700-century building, the stairs are quite steep and the cottage is on 3 floors, this is stated in the description. However, I will highlight this further.
I don’t understand your comment regarding parking. We always provide details to the guest giving several different options to park nearby. Furthermore, there is welcome pack in the cottage with this and other and I did email you personally with the same information. So I don’t really understand why did you have any problems to park.
We really value our guest's feedback and would like to thank you for your booking.
Best wishes,
Millgate Cottage
Really nice cottage on 3 floors. Description of property is accurate and also comes with everything you need. The location is a 60 second walk from the main town square , but it’s still very quiet, as there is very little through traffic on millgate. Great walks round castle walls and along the side of the river, close by.
Will be back again.

We're really looking forward to welcoming you to Millgate Cottage. It's a lovely cosy place with a contemporary feel and in keeping with the charms of a period cottage.
I was born in the North of England and feel a strong connection to this part of the world, especially North Yorkshire. For me, this part of the UK has many hidden natural gems, many of which can be found in the Yorkshire Dales.
I am a lover of the outdoors and well-traveled. I work as a photographer and lecturer, my photographic artwork focuses on the complexities of the natural world. I also have many other interests such as the arts, exploring different cultures, self-development, and meeting all sorts of people.
Why they chose this property
We really love our cottage, this is because of its uniqueness, location, and its lovely homely and warm atmosphere. To be honest we never want to leave.
What makes this property unique
It’s perfect for a quiet getaway to recharge the batteries and for leisurely strolling along the cobbled streets of the old town. At the doorstep of the town is the stunning landscape of Swaledale, the most northerly of the dales and has the wildest, most unspoilt scenery in the National Park. Here you will also find picturesque villages such as Reeth, Gunnerside, or Muker. If you are an outdoor activities lover this is a paradise for hillwalking, trekking, or bike hiring to name a few.
