Rose Cottage has a south facing terraced front garden with fantastic views across the dale. Entry to the cottage is via a useful porch, designed to accommodate muddy boots and/or for drying off the beloved pet! The kitchen diner is homely and furnished in farmhouse style with a traditional Yorkshire flagged stone floor. A cosy beamed sitting room provides a relaxing place to "get away from it all" and relax. There is a utility room which provides space for storing outdoor equipment such as climbing or cycling gear. The stairs lead to a newly refurbished shower room and then upwards on to a separate cloakroom with WC and wash basin. The two double bedrooms are at the front of the house and both provide beautiful views across the dale to the opposing hills. Situated in a lovely quiet and friendly village Rose Cottage is ideally placed for those wishing to walk the many footpaths, cycle the quiet lane or simply relax and watch the world go by. It is on the coast to coast walk and close to the Dales Bike Centre where you can arrange to hire bicycles for your stay.

We had a wonderful, peaceful stay. The cottage is beautiful and the location and views are amazing. An ideal place to explore the Dales from and for great walks with our dog

It is pleasing that you enjoyed your stay and you and your dog made good use of the lovely footpath walks right from the garden gate.
I look forward to welcoming you back soon.
We have stayed at Rose Cottage several times and always enjoy our stay. Cottage is cosy with everything you need for a lovely stay. Communication with Gay is really good. A visit to Leyburn was enjoyable and the Kings Head in Reeth do a delicious fish and chips! We had other things planned but sadly had to leave early this time due to a health issue with myself. Hope to return next year.

Prorerty is a quant little cottage set in a fairly isolated area of the Yorkshire dales. Ideal place for walkers or a quiet break from a busy lifestyle. Cottage has everything you want. The only thing i would suggest is that it could do with an all over spruce up.

Thank you for your review, Kevin. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay at Rose Cottage. I take on board what you say. It has been a long and delightfully hot summer season and we will be shortly refreshing the decor and fittings as we usually do in the winter months when it is less busy.
The cottage is in a quiet village location with fantastic views across Swaledale. The cottage is lovely and quirky and fully equipped. Plenty of paths to walk from the door step along the coast to coast route and to inns in Grinto and Reet.
Had a lovely relaxing few days. Total peace and quiet away from it all. Fabulous scenery and walks on the doorstep and Reeth just a couple of miles away for tea rooms and pubs.

Many thanks for your review. So pleased you had a good holiday. At this time of year there are often lambs playing in the field in front of the cottage I hope you had the pleasure of their fun and games.
I hope you will come back to Swaledale and stay again at Rose Cottage in the future.

My family thoroughly enjoyed our time at Rose Cottage. It was a central place for our trip to the Dales. Rustic but comfortable. Everything we needed and more. Would highly recommend it. We will hopefully be back.

Amazing location, quaint cottage with all you'll need for your stay. I brought all food and laundry stuff I needed which was useful as no local shops. I'd highly recommend for walkers and couples looking for a refreshing break away from everything. Highly recommend visits to Reeth market Thursday mornings and Richmond any day for a variety of lovely shops and an interesting architecture ☺️👍

Easy booking process. Easy contact with owner. Information file needs some serious updating (no info o. Rubbish collections etc) and freezing cold shower room needs the radiator sorting out.

Not quite, I'm afraid
Owning an older home myself, I'm in perfect sympathy with the owner's observations that it's difficult to keep a 200-year-old house free from "critters". But it is possible to do so, as I can attest, having spent much of the last 5 months staying in some amazing older B+Bs in the north. I "battled" spiders in the shower area two of my four nights. I think with some additional investment, this property has some nice potential, but on this particular stay I never did quite feel comfortable.

Thank you for taking the time to give us some feedback. I am sorry you found spiders in the shower room . It is a very old stone built traditional dales cottage and at this time of year, with the best will in the world, it is impossible to be entirely free of the odd spider. The cleaners had done a thorough job just before your arrival. However, as you say yourself, you got rid of the spider(s) in the shower room only to find that within hours you had to repeat the removal.
Wow what can I say, this was an amazing little find.
Authentic traditional charming Yorkshire cottage with gorgeous uninterrupted views across swaledale and beyond, we took the fabulous road from Leyburn to Grinton, views not to be missed.
The cottage was homely, this traditional stone cottage had all the amenities for modern day living without compromising the rustic structure, the kitchen is very well equipped, the bed was comfy, some of the best sleep we both had, with such calm and peace at night. The cottage has not been compromised, traditional walls and Features throughout making this a very special Yorkshire experience, the dogs loved the stone floor in the kitchen when the sun was beaming down, an easy to find location, parking through 2 wooden gates or roadside for large vehicles, lots of local walks without the need to drive, but for those wanting to spread out further it’s a really good base for any of the quaint little towns and beautiful dales.
Check in was easy, Gays directions and instructions where excellent, great communication while we were there, the WIFI was great, never let us down, great to have a smart tv got to catch up on our favourite TV.
If you want to take a step back from the rat run of city life or daily grind and want something relaxing and traditional this is the place to be.
Lovely flag stone garden for the dogs to have a rest between walking, we will definitely be returning.

Health & hygeine hazards - check they have been resolved before booking this cottage.
While the cottage does have a certain charm and is of its age, this is no excuse for the health and hygiene issues that caused us to leave after just one night of the five nights we had booked.
The pictures in the listing were not representative of the reality of this property, which smelt strongly of damp, was covered in cobwebs (and spiders), had dead insects in the bathroom light fitting, and clearly has issue with mice/rats - which we heard in the ceiling & were concerned about immediately upon entering the property, owing to the many high sound frequency deterrent plug-ins placed around the property.
Having decided to give the place the benefit of the doubt, one of us was up coughing all night (undoubtedly linked to the damp and unclean state of the property).
The bed itself was comfortable and the lounge was cosy but we didn't not feel comfortable in the kitchen or bathroom areas due to the cleanliness and pest issues.
Having decided to leave the property early, we contacted the property owner to inform them. To her credit, she refunded us for the four nights we did not stay but only after initially stating she 'did not agree' with our complaints - even though she later confirmed she was unable to check the issues.
The property is in a in idyllic setting and could be a lovely escape but is currently in a state of disrepair and needs a deep clean. I would advise that any potential guests check with the owner that the issues described above have been resolved before booking.

Rose Cottage is a stone built detached house which is over 200 years old. I am sorry that you found cobwebs and spiders as the cleaners had been in only hours before your arrival to de cobweb and de spider as at this time of year like most old properties it is difficult to get rid of them all together. With the best will in the world you can think you have cleared them only to find in hours they are back having scurried away and hidden in one of the many nooks and crannies inherent in old stone houses.
I am puzzled that you felt the house was damp as all the walls are either recently damp proofed or are dry lined as, again typical of houses of that period, there was no damp course.
The ultra sonic devices strategically placed around the house at this time of year are not because there is a pest problem but as a precaution against same. The cottage is detached and surrounded by and fields and in the autumn and winter the warm stone walls which are over 2 feet thick are attractive to small animals so as a precaution the ultra sound plugs are used to deter the odd adventurous one from entering.
I cannot agree that the house is in a state of disrepair or that it is unhygienic but take on board your opinion.
I am glad you found something more to your taste so quickly.
Rose cottage si trova in una buona posizione per visitare la regione, la tranquillità del luogo e la vista sono perfetti . La casa è molto caratteristica e ben attrezzata con un fascino vintage… proprio quello che cercavamo.

Lovely rustic, quirky cottage in a tiny hamlet. Very warm and cosy thanks to the Esse range which I was just getting good at cooking with when we had to leave, loved it as did our dogs who were happy to curl up next to it all night! Plenty other options for cooking in the cottage, the microwave combo grill was a fantastic. Lovely walks from the doorstep, especially the path that takes you from Marrick to Grinton (approx 3 miles) for lunch at the Bridge in, dogs and muddy boots are welcomed inside but there are tables outside too. The downside was the path takes you through a farmyard which has an aggressive farm dog (black lab type called Sam) who bit our dog. Slightly spoiled the walk knowing we had to come back through on our way home, thankfully he wasn’t out! Communication with Gay was 1st class, even without a phone signal! If you are looking for perfection, this is not the cottage for you! It is a beautiful old cottage with spiders, steep stairs and no straight walls or level floors, we loved it!

Beautiful location
We were disappointed with the cleanliness of this property and also the furniture, it was very mismatched and cheap. I spent our first day cleaning and removing spiders and cobwebs.
The kitchen was so cluttered we couldn't use any cupboards for food as they were full to bursting with so many dishes.
The beds were very clean and comfortable and this was lovely.
This cottage is beautiful and the location is stunning, we enjoyed local walks and the surrounding locations which was why I rated this holiday a yes I enjoyed my stay.
Rustic matching furniture and a major declutter and clean would have made this stay much better....I understand the cottage is rural but it can also be clean and tastefully decorated.
Guests do not need all that clutter in the kitchen.
A holiday is what you make it and we enjoyed our stay in the glorious Yorkshire Dales.
This farm cottage is a lovely hideaway and all you’d expect from an old building nestled amongst the farms. It’s wonderfully situated to walk many footpaths around Swaledale and soak up the beautiful landscapes. The cottage is comfortable, warm, and offers a real taste of a simpler country life.
The Esse cooker is certainly a cooking experience all on its own. Gaye has left excellent instructions.
The king size bed was very comfortable which is a refreshing change appreciated by us tall folk. There were one or two bumped heads on door frames when we forgot to duck!
Gaye was easily contacted when storms knocked out the power to the local water supply, and really couldn’t have been more helpful in reporting the problem and ensuring we were well taken care of.
We’d thoroughly recommend Rose Cottage to those wishing an authentic Yorkshire hamlet visit!
The house was superbly clean and absolutely lovely - was enchanted by it as was my husband. Beautiful inside and so much character. The area was surperb for walking our dog. The Dales were fantastic and our favourite place was Leyburn - cannot recomend this property highly enough. We would happily book it again. Great place in every sense of the word.
Great property in a very peaceful area. Cosy cottage with lovely views. Didnt use the Esse as good alternatives but it warmed the kitchen well. Excellent wifi in house.
This was our second stay at Rose Cottage and it is a great base to explore the area. Set in a quiet village with 3 farms. From the garden at the front you can say hello to friendly walkers passing by on the coast to coast walk, see the sheep in the field opposite and watch the tractors. Occasionally sheep are driven along the lane. In the evening an owl landed on the telegraph pole, scanning the field below. The cottage is a step back in time with modern facilities and the beds are very comfortable.

Rose cottage is just as you would expect, a lovely little place ,tucked away in the village of Merrick. With Richmond a couple of miles away and the Yorkshire countryside all around ,you cant go wrong .We enjoyed our visit immensely.
Wonderful peaceful location with fabulous views
Cosy and warm cottage ,really quaint with very comfortable bed
Had a lovely relaxed stay
Lucky to have had great weather to enjoy sitting on the terrace
Friendly locals
We had a great week in this lovely cottage with country decor and traditional features, very warm and cosy. The Esse cooker is easy to use for casseroles and slow cooked meals. Modern options of electric wok, halogen cooker and microwave oven and grill. The king size bed is very comfortable. Good size enclosed front garden with off road parking was enjoyed for sitting out, safe for the dog, even with sheep and coast to coast walkers passing along the lane. Friendly neighbour too. We had good weather and did lots of walking and enjoyed a trip into Richmond. Would love to return.

Excellent area. Lovely cottage could do with small amount of work to certain doors, possibly go back to stone floor in room. Otherwise perfect relaxing break.
