About this property

Romantic Tree Cottage in the Rainforest

No detail overlooked! A serene custom-designed studio retreat in the treetops of Volcano, Hawaii. Tree cottage includes a beautiful kitchen, spacious bathroom with indoor/outdoor shower, private driveway, top-level lanai off the living area for viewing the unique local flora. Interior is mid-century tropical with pristine hardwood floors, hanging rattan chair for daydreams, queen-sized bed, and bistro table setting provides an intimate setting for morning coffee, or evening dinner for two.

Relax in the tranquility of the ohi'a and hapu'u trees native to this unique part of the world, while enjoying your favorite creature comforts.

The tree cottage is 300 sq. feet, custom-designed and adorned by the host/owner providing a more personal experience for the guests. Amenities such as an easy to access entrance, beautiful decor, a well-appointed kitchen, consistent hot water, electricity, fluffy towels, ceiling fan and comfy bed make a luxurious take on the treehouse experience we all dream of experiencing.

Coffee, tea, and oatmeal are also provided for morning foraging. :)

The living area has glass french doors that welcome you in to the cottage. Once inside you'll be inspired by the beautiful pitched pine ceiling, large windows and 8" sliding glass doors providing a perfect vantage into the trees. At this height you can see the colorful birds flitting from tree to tree and the clouds rolling in from the coast.

The kitchen has hardwood flooring, custom cabinetry and quartz counter tops. It comes complete with a four-burner gas stove, small fridge, full-sized sink, coffee maker, and toaster oven.

The bathroom has a lovely tiled shower with pebble floor and a rain shower head for an incredible experience. The big windows, flower-shaped vessel sink, quartz counter tops, tiled floor, and fluffy bath linens provided give the bathroom the feeling of a beautiful, relaxing spa.

The outdoor garden is spotted with new, young plants but still evokes a feeling of privacy, peace, tranquility, and a change of pace from everyday life.

House water is potable and chemical-free. Piped in from the outdoor rain catchment system, the water is purified with a UV system and filtered.

The tree cottage was built by a local contractor, engaging local businesses for the materials. Shannon's hands-on management (even cleaning between guests!) and pride in ownership for the property results in a tree cottage guests can feel comfortable staying in.

*For the comfort and safety of guests, personal belongings and the property the exterior of building has surveillance monitoring.

One of the best VRBO stays ever!

This property was so cute and the perfect size for a couple. The proximity to Volcano NP is a highlight point! It’s exactly as described in the post and the dehumidifier was a game changer. We’ll definitely stay here again if we’re back!

The place was very nice, exceptFor the outside area underneath. It was not really usable and it looked as if stray animals had been on the chairs. Without that space it was quite small, but the bed was good and the kitchen was surprisingly well equipped. Bathroom was cozy but just fine.

Fantastic Stay

Everything was great! Cleanliness, location, communication with host, etc made this an easy 5 star review. If you are a couple or a solo traveler looking to stay in Volcano, I would recommend staying here. Especially if you plan on hiking in the National Park, it’s only a quick drive away from the park entrance.

Great Getaway

We loved our stay here and wished we could have stayed longer. The location was great as it was next to volcano national park and not to far from Hilo. It was a quiet accept for the occasional chicken. Everything was as expected and check in was easy.

Up in the trees near the world's most active volcano

If at night time you notice a red glow then Kīlauea is erupting again, a short drive to the National Volcano Park will give you the most amazing sights.

Perfect Location for Volcanoes National Park

The unit is quiet and cute, and had everything we needed before we went to check out Volcanoes National Park. I would recommend it to any couple who is in the area looking for a place to sleep, make a meal and grab a shower before exploring the park.

This is a cute little cottage in a beautiful setting in your own little forest. The cottage was built using all space efficiently. The bed was comfortable, bathroom very nice and the kitchen was very usable. The negatives would be there is absolutely no place to put your luggage (2 small carryons)so we had to use the two chairs that went with the table which left no place to sit to eat. The only place indoors to sit is either in the bed or the hanging chair which we had to use to stack all the bed pillows on. There is a nice space down below to sit outdoors.

Rainforest Cottage

This is a lovely, private cottage in a forested subdivision. The cottage has the feeling of a treehouse. It is very well equipped and clean and comfortable. We especially appreciated the mattress cover warmer, for the chilly nights. Very quiet, you awake to birds singing. Close (3miles) to Volcanoes National Park. Only thing I would suggest is that you provide bath soap or bodywash.

The best tropical treehouse getaway!

Super adorable treehouse cottage! Shannon left no detail untouched like all the reviews said! Super clean, super adorable! Falling asleep to the sound of the rain, and frogs every night was magical! Being close to Volcano national park was perfect for hikes. All the directions and updates for instructions of how to use things were perfect while we were there. Would absolutely stay here again if we ever are lucky enough to visit the Big Island again!

Not for winter stay

We were there in February and it was rainy and quite cold. The room although very nicely decorated was cold and the small heater was barely helpful even though the room is small It was damp and the small dehumidifier really didn’t help. Every day there was moisture dripping down inside the entrance sliding glass door and it smelled musty. We actually didn’t want to stay there and cook because it was not comfortable to be there. We were there for 5 nights and although we asked for and got extra bath towels, they didn’t dry because of the temperature and dampness. There were several lights out on the outside steps up to the room making it difficult to see. That said , the decor is nice and new items in the kitchen. The surroundings are beautiful like rain forest . Don’t go in the cold wet weather, summer might be good. It’s very close to Volcanoes National Park

What can I say, this place was perfect to celebrate an anniversary. It was romantic, very comfortable, clean, relaxing and every detail was thought of. The bed is to die for, comfortable, warm and the center of the treehouse overlooking the rainforest. Slept with windows open to hear the frogs. Owner really did a great job stocking the place with beautiful local art and all the comforts of home. There was a couch and soft lighting beneath the cottage for evening relaxing. She even took extra care with the property planting flowers, bamboo and native Hawaiian plants around the property. We were lucky enough to be only 4 minutes from volcano national park and got to see Kīlauea erupt. Hostess also sent me a whole list of sights, restaurants and stores. Kīlauea lodge was fabulous for dinner highly recommend. We flew into Hilo, but did take a trip to Kona side to swim with the manta rays. Well worth doing and was a trip highlight. Would recommend staying at this cottage for so many reasons but loved no tv, cleanliness, bed comfort, location and exceptional privacy. Wish we could have spent more time at the actual vrbo but will be back and recommend to all our friends!!!Oh and don’t miss the botanical gardens just north of Hilo on scenic route. This was another highlight of trip and not to be missed for anyone that loves plants, flowers or landscaping. Akaka falls and rainbow falls are right near here so see all three as a side trip.

About the host

Hosted by Shannon

Host profile image
Aloha! My name is Shannon. I'm an entrepreneur and soon-to-be grad student who loves to travel, live in new places and meet new people. I custom-designed the tree cottage, had it built to spec, and manage the property. Over the last several years my travels, experience living abroad and pure enjoyment of helping others have led me to become a host.

Why they chose this property

Shannon’s home is located in Volcano, Hawaii, United States.
True to the Hawaiian translation of the street name, meaning 'beautiful forest', the property is surrounded by rainforest jungle on all sides with a driveway from the street. The tree cottage is set back about 100 feet off the street for extra privacy.

Just two miles (four minute drive) from the infamous Volcanoes National Park and one mile away from the quaint and charming Volcano Village. This artistic enclave has an art center, gallery, gardens, shops, restaurants, lodges, gas station, and a nature reserve.
