About the host
Hosted by Tanja Holzhaus
Hello, We are Andy and Tanja and we live in the Netherlands. Andy is originally from England and I was born and raised in Amsterdam. We've been married for over 20 years and we love to travel whenever we can. We have our own company in IT and Photography which allows us to work from different locations. When we came to Madeira for the first time we just loved it immediately. After a few more visits we decided to look for a second house here and after more then 4 years we finally found 'the one' .
Madeira is so beautiful, versatile, safe and friendly. It has a vast history, culture, beautiful nature, unique sea water-swimming pools, a network of Levadas and mountain trails. You can go to the beach and catch some sun and then later set of in the ancient Lauris Lava (laurel tree Unesco protected forrest) and find yourself amidst the clouds. The weather is very nice throughout the year (give or take some windy or stormy days sometimes) and there are whales and dolphins swimming near by the coast. (there are several Sea-life watching trips with guaranteed sightings) There are many different and affordable restaurants with great local dishes and loads of little (Poncha = local alcoholic specialty) Poncha and traditional bars. For real clubbing and nightlife Funchal is the place to go. Most people speak (some) English so it's easy getting around without speaking Portugese, although a few words are always highly appreciated :)
Why they chose this property
Although we love Funchal and the surrounding area, and also many other different places around the island, Arco de Calheta has overall the best weather, more direct acces to the mountains and sea-life and a small (handmade) beach surrounded by a cute harbour and nice restaurants and 5* hotels. It is less busy and very central to go anywhere on the island.
This property was shown to us because we were in the area looking at another house. And while it was bigger then what we searched for, the moment we stepped upon the balcony we were sold! The view is all we ever wanted, the pool is an unexpected plus and the spacious house with it's modern and local features truly our style. Luckily it turned out that it was already a Holiday let with impressive reviews and that the property managers would keep running it for us as they did. They are a couple from England and Madeira and such wonderful service-minded and friendly people, that we dared to make the leap and here we are.
Although perfect at is we are looking at some future improvements and extra's, without taking away anything that made people love it so much so we truly hope we can make people love their stay their as much as we love to be there :)
What makes this property unique
Here I'm supposed to say what our UNIQUE benefits are and I'm not sure what 'unique' would be as not much is unique nowadays but I can say what WE love about the house; The view (oh had I already mentioned that?) the 10 x 3.5 infinity pool, the sunrise over the mountain on the left - sun all day - and then the sunset on the right into the ocean. The spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, the balconies top and poolside overlooking the ocean. (Even from the top floor you have constant view around thanks to the glass walls and windows) The side terrace with garden and BBQ.. The fact there is room for a full size game room and that everything is well kept and modern in style .I love to cook, so a fully equipped kitchen is a must and I love the granite cooking island. I guess maybe in short it's better to ask what I don't like :) - The climb back up on foot with groceries - Taking the wrong road up (read OUR directions not Google maps!) in the car (Holland is as flat as a pancake so I have to get used to some of these steep hills- maybe their no bother to you) but other then that we just totally love the place.
