If you are looking for that perfect romantic getaway or holiday cottage then the Cider Tower is what you are looking for. Cider Tower dates from 1710 and now provides luxury self catering accommodation for 2 people in the a beautifully restored former windmill, once used to press apples from local orchards. The Tower still enjoys a peaceful setting with wonderful views over the adjoining filed so the Dee Estuary and Galloway hills but is still within walking distance of Kirkcudbright. The accommodation is over the 2 floors and facilities include a ground floor bedroom with a four-poster bed while the living accommodation on the first floor makes the most of the outstanding views from the tower.
Kirkcudbright is full of historical and cultural history with it’s quaint “old Town” of traditional townhouses with small closes and pends to explore. In more modern times it has gained a reputation as a centre of excellence for Arts and Crafts with it’s connections to the Glasgow Boys and Girls The town has many galleries to explore along with the historic Tolbooth Arts Centre, Stewartry Museum and McClelland Castle. The castle and harbour square are a central part to the annual Tattoo and there is also an annual Jazz Festival. The town has as wide selection of excellent family owned shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy together with a community owned swimming pool and an active summer festivities programme, including popular Scottish Nights.
The town’s history of being connected to the fishing and maritime life is still present today with a busy harbour and marina. Extending from the harbour there are riverside walks to explore and see the changing wildlife as the tide rises and falls up the estuary. Further afield but still with in a short drive are the stunning beaches interspersed with rocky headlands that fringe the Solway Firth. While inland there is easy access to the UK’s largest forest area of the Galloway Forest Park (297 square miles) with excellent facilities for both walking and mountain bike trails.
