Town: Named after the Norse word for "bay," Uig is a small settlement on the western shore of the Isle of Lewis. It is well-known for its beautiful sand dunes and breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean. Attractions include the beautiful beaches of Valtos Peninsula and Mealista Beach, as well as refreshing walks along Berie and Ardroil sands, which are both rich in history (archaeologists have discovered ancient hut circles here, and the famous Lewis Chessmen were found here), and more contemporary activities, such as kiteboarding and windsurfing. The spectacular Uig Sands restaurant and the Loch Croistean Café, housed in a renovated schoolhouse, are both available to visitors during the appropriate seasons. Abhainn Dearg is also home to a distillery. In the Uig Community Shop, you can get all the basics. Visitors can go on a boat at Miavaig Pier, located just outside the settlement, to explore the surrounding islands.
