Luxury dog friendly cottage perfect for exploring Pembrokeshire coast

Dympha and Bill are the most welcoming hosts and even meet you to let you know all about the Barn. The Barn is full of extra luxuries and attention to detail for all your holiday needs. It makes it feel like a boutique hotel. The dog welcome pack was an additional treat for our dog and the Barn has everything both families and dog owners would need. Including the most comfy beds for you and your dog. It is the perfect location to explore the Pembrokeshire Coastline with castles, beautiful beaches, Tenby and family activities all within a short drive. This is our 2nd stay and will definetly be back again.

A great family break.

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at The Barn. The hosts were very welcoming and have clearly put a lot of thought into their accommodation covering every possible need of their guests. They are also very knowledgeable of the area and are happy to offer suggestions to help guests make the most of their time. We were extremely pleased with the facilities and their quality. The Barn has all the comforts of home combined with the luxury of a hotel. Highly recommended.

Cosy, immaculate and superbly equipped. Dogs included.

My husband and I, along with our 2 elderly terriers had a great week at the barn. Cottage was well fenced, so no worries about escapees, always my first concern. Dympna met us on arrival and quickly went through all the technical details and storage locations. A lovely unexpected welcome hamper was supplied, meaning we didn’t have to go anywhere else until at least after breakfast the next day. High quality local produce : bread, eggs, honey, milk and butter- not forgetting the Welsh cakes too. A huge array of delicious organic teas, coffees and drinking chocolate were also provided, The dogs had their own welcome hamper that included grain free treats (and a huge jar of ‘normal’ treats) toys and emergency poo bags. The beds and sofas were comfy, with a multitude of throws provided to provide protection from dogs who are used to being on sofas. The TV had sky services and an amazing soundbar, that has made our home set seem woefully inadequate. The kitchen was amazingly well equipped, even down to funnels and a champagne stopper. There was plenty of crockery and glasses, so we never ran out of anything until the dishwasher was full. The holiday was made all the better by being provided with guide books and maps (we used them every day) and all the information on local restaurants which we had lovely meals in.

8/10 Good

Friendly but not for dogs

The property itself is a lovely building with modern, high-tech décor, located in a beautiful village with good access to local sights. The home was spotlessly clean and welcoming, providing a comfortable stay. However, a few aspects could be improved. The presence of a ring doorbell felt somewhat intrusive for temporary accommodation. Communication from the host, while well-intentioned, was quite frequent before and after our arrival, and felt a little overwhelming after a long 11-hour journey, particularly during check-in when we would have preferred a quieter arrival. For guests travelling with dogs, the property is less suitable. There is no enclosed outdoor area, and we were advised to use the local green down the road. Unfortunately, due to heavy rain, this proved difficult and the dogs were uncomfortable, which led us to leave earlier than planned along with other personal reasons. Overall, the house is beautiful and very comfortable, but it may not be the most practical option for guests with pets or those seeking a more private and low-key experience. The photographs are not reflective of the actual property giving a more spacious feel. However, it’s quite cramped and you can hear next door go up the stairs and share a drive. A little squashed but very well maintained. Finally, there is only one toilet. It is situated in the middle bedroom. So you have to walk through someone’s room to get to the toilet and shower/bath. Nevertheless, the bathroom probably has had the most money spent with state of the art shower and lighting.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about your stay at the Barn. Firstly we hope that your other daughter, whose poor health meant you had to unfortunately return home after one night, has improved. Turning now to your thoughts regarding the cottage, we are very concerned about some of the points you have made which do not align with the +138 reviews from our guests since we opened 4 years ago. The reviews from guests staying with their dogs, have been universally positive. For the safety of dogs staying at the cottage, the garden at the Barn has a 5ft high wall with double gates which my husband advised you to close for the safety of your dogs (as we do with all guests who have dogs). The neighbouring guests, who use the same drive access due to the layout of the off road parking area, were informed that you had dogs and would be closing the gates. All guests are advised that, if the gates are closed, they should close them when they arrive or depart the neighbouring cottage. We don’t understand why you chose not to close the gates, yet you suggest that the garden is not enclosed, when it is - if guests close the gates. The green, which is a 2 minute walk from the cottage, is an area we point out to all guests, as we did with yourselves, for those dogs that require grass for their toileting, because we don’t currently have a grass area at the cottage. Many holiday let properties are now equipped with security cameras to ensure the safety of guests and their possessions, along with the properties when they are unoccupied between guests. The cameras also ensure that guests are not conducting illegal activities for which owners could be liable to prosecution. Similarly we have chosen to install security cameras over the parking area and a Ring doorbell for each cottage. The doorbells are a useful facility for guests when takeaway meals are delivered. The presence of the cameras is advised on entry to the properties but they are not routinely watched unless necessary. We do believe that the professionally commissioned photographs are very representative of the cottage, and many of our past guests have stated that they do precisely reflect the property. Our website also benefits from a Matterport Virtual Tour of the cottage which potential guests are free to view to gain a more detailed appreciation of the rooms. We are also very confused as to how you were able to hear the guests next door going up and down the stairs as there is a room between the soundproofed dividing wall which separates the cottages, and the stairs in the neighbouring property. One of our biggest concerns relates to your observation about the “third bedroom” - the Barn only has two bedrooms and this was explained to you in our correspondence when you initially contacted us about availability. When you enquired about the cottage, as your stay was for 3 people, we advised that you could have either two single beds in the second bedroom or, if you preferred, the second bedroom could be made up as a King bed which would mean that the third guest would use the full-sized, single daybed on the large landing. You chose the latter. The bathroom is off the landing, rather than a bedroom, which is the case in almost every house. Part of what makes our cottages stand out from the crowd, and enabled us to win three awards, is the personal service we give to our guests. We have tailored our email correspondence to be very personal rather than generic unlike so many of the bigger operators; in addition we communicate directly with our guests via text or WhatsApp to ensure that all and any questions are answered personally. We meet our guests on arrival, again detailed in confirmation emails, so we request an approximate arrival time with an update when guests are an hour away. We appreciated that your drive from Lincolnshire to Pembrokeshire involved a very long journey (of around 8-9 hours) for a short stay of only two nights, so we ensured that the walk around the cottage and explanation of such things as recycling and use of the Sky TV with your daughter whilst you stood outside, was as short as we could make it at between 10-15 minutes - it’s important to us that our guests get into the cottages as quickly as possible to relax and enjoy their stay. The reason for requesting an ETA is twofold: firstly it means that we can work around the most important people, our guests, and we can plan our day and, secondly (and by far the most important), it means that if guests are caught in traffic, have to stop to exercise their dogs, or they simply want to stop to get a drink or a meal, they aren’t feeling under pressure because they are worried about arriving late. Many of our guests comment on how much they enjoy being made to feel special because of our personal contact and service - and our guests ARE very special to us; they entrust their spare time to our care and it is our privilege and honour to ensure that they enjoy their time away from home whilst staying in our cottages. In an increasingly impersonal and isolating world, we pride ourselves on delivering traditional values of excellent communication and exceptionally good customer service, because every one of our guests is special and matters to us. We are very sorry that our USP did not align with your expectations. We really do hope that you find other, more suitable, accommodation for your future travels.

Perfect Cosy Base for Pembrokeshire

We stayed in the Barn which is for up to 5 people for our stay and was lucky enough to win this as part of a Xmas giveaway. It has allocated parking, 2 bedrooms, large kitchen diner, living room and bathroom. There is also a landing room adjoining the rooms upstairs which has an extra bed and a desk. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. There are plenty of crockery and cutlery. We also received a welcome pack which was a beautiful touch consisting of fresh bread, eggs, milk, honey and fruit cake. Recycling is encouraged and there are relevant bins for this. In the living area, a smart TV is provided with access to Netflix and other streaming apps. My favourite feature was the log burner and there was enough wood and kindling available for our stay. The bathroom was spotless and includes both a tub and shower cubicle. Towels are soft. I loved the little touches such as make up cleaning cloths and cotton buds. The whole place was eco-friendly and noticed the use of refillable. Both Dympna and Bill were amazing hosts and fantastic to work with. I would highly recommend this cottage. I forgot to say, it's also pet friendly.

Beautifully restored Barn (next to a similar restored Coach House)

The photos on the website certainly lived up to seeing The Barn in real life. We were extremely tired after an almost 6 hour drive to Honeyborough, & couldn't wait to put the kettle on & start unwinding! We were shown how everything worked etc, and soon we were able to sit back & get over a journey that involved windscreen wipers the whole way! No need to unpack the tea etc, as everything is provided for the start of your holiday, simply everything has been though of. The welcome basket was a real treat, & the book with details where local places to explore were detailed, a real bonus. I would love to give 5 stars across the board, but as I was recovering from heart trouble, we only went out during the day, & I simply had to lay down each evening, as the tablets make me so lethargic - which left little room for my husband, who always then had the corner end of the corner settee, which made watching TV a bit difficult. If there were 4 adults (it sleeps 5) it might have been tight! Everywhere else in this lovely barn conversion was very roomy. The adjoining property had a small fenced in garden, which would have suited us more, seeing as we always holiday with our two dogs, it would be nice to sit outside knowing they were totally safe. All in all, a beautiful restored holiday home, in a beautiful area (nearby Marina had a lovely restaurant) as did Milford Haven Marina.
Response from VrboOwner on 12 Aug 2023
We are so delighted that you enjoyed the Barn; we take the point about the corner settee - it’s a tricky one due to the layout and shape of the room which is why we added the small sofa. We will definitely get you booked into the Coach House next time as there is a huge sofa in there with loads of space.

About the host

Hosted by Dympna

Host profile image
Bill grew up in Neyland and Dympna is from Sussex; we met many years ago when students. 14 years later Dympna moved to Pembrokeshire to marry Bill. We have both travelled extensively for work and leisure - we think holidays are great fun so we wanted to host guests in our beautiful county to give them a very comfortable Home from Home experience with their friends, families and four-legged friends. We love meeting our guests, some of whom have become our friends, and we love to share our knowledge of Pembrokeshire for others to enjoy.

Why they chose this property

Bill grew up in Neyland; his father was a fish merchant in Milford Haven in what is now the retail and restaurant quarter of Milford Docks. Pembrokeshire is an amazing county with stunning beaches, plentiful activities for guests, and some wonderful history and beautiful wildlife. We love to share all of it with our guests.

What makes this property unique

Our cottage is cleaned to a very high standard between guests, ensuring that both guests without dogs, and dog owners, will be comfortable during their stay. We are now super dog-friendly but also provide a luxury feel for our guests. For guests who have dogs that don’t go on the beds, we use high quality hotel linen which is hand ironed for added luxury. If your dog(s) like to sleep on the beds we are very happy for you to bring your own bedding. If your furry friends like to snuggle up on the sofa, we provide throws for them; you will also find a dog towel, a hose outside for rinsing off sand or mud, plus a selection of dog toys, poo bags and dog treats. We don’t forget our human guests of course; a starter pack of firefighters, kindling and logs will keep you warm on cool evenings, your Welcome Hamper contains locally produced items and a selection of teas and coffees will keep you hydrated, along with the filtered water on tap for refilling your water bottles.
