About this property
La Goupillère, farmhouse and extensive grounds in a tranquil country setting
IMPORTANT ! This listing incorrectly states in some places that your booking will be for one room! The rates quoted are for the entire 3 bedroom property with sole occupation. VRBO are unable to fix this problem!
La Goupillère is a spacious, restored old farmhouse which stands in the grounds of what was once a large working farm. The property has been a very successful holiday rental since 2011 and most of our clientele are returning guests or recommendations from previous guests so our fairly recent listing here does not reflect the very many five star reviews we have eaned in that time. Please read on to see what we offer...
The property is surrounded by arable land. There are no animal facilities or commercial installations anywhere in the vicinity. This is not to say there are no animals around, of course there are but only in the nice sense.
With living accommodation of 185 square metres (2,000 square feet) and with three double bedrooms and two bathrooms, each with a proper shower cubicle and one with a bath, the property is designed to accommodate up to six people in comfort.
La Goupillère is not a gîte in the traditional meaning of the term - it is a very well appointed detached country house and, although we live nearby and are therefore on hand should you need us, we are not on-site, so you can enjoy your privacy. The house is stand-alone and there are no other guests sharing any part of it.
What you see in the pictures is what you get, the whole property, the grounds and lots of covered parking hidden from public view. Because of this it is popular with visitors to the Le Mans 24 hour and Classic events, an hour's pleasant drive away.
This area of France has much to offer. It is farming country and most of the villages and towns hold events throughout the summer. There are lots of small medieval towns that retain their charm and history, amazing many visitors that they have never heard of them e.g. Sainte-Suzanne with its walled town, ancient fortress and château, Jublains with its extensive Gallo-Roman remains and Lassay-les-Châteaux with one of the best examples of a fortified medieval château in France, complete with a working drawbridge and barbican. Le Château de la Motte Husson, Dick and Angel's place featured in Escape to the Château, is a 30 minute easy drive. The map shows all the nearest ferry ports and airports and also what is within an easy one and two hour drive.
The Plantagenet city of Le Mans is an absolute must, especially so in July and August when the "Nuit des chimères" is enacted. You have dinner at one of the many wonderful, inexpensive restaurants then just as it's getting dark be prepared to experience one of the most enchanting spectacles you have ever seen. There are similar, if not quite so spectacular, events in Mayenne and Laval.
There are plenty of activities and the area is particularly noted for walking and rambling, cycling, fishing, horse riding, exploring ancient woodland or just driving through the beautiful and traffic-free countryside and forests. The Alpes Mancelles are 25 km but; although stunning, there is no skiing! There's plenty of scope for picnics and indeed these are a regular local pastime.
For swimming, there is a wonderful lake with a sandy man-made beach at Sillé-le-Guillaume, just 17 km away, another at Gué de Selle, slightly nearer and quieter and excellent public pools at Bais (7 km), Villaines-la-Juhel (11 km) and Evron (16 km). The beach at Sillé-le-Guillaume also has horse and donkey rides, boat trips, pedalos and bars and restaurants. It's great for kids and adults alike.

About the host
Hosted by Peter Marshall

We have run our very successful 4 star gîte for 14 years and can honestly say we have never had dissatisfied guests. Many have and continue to return regularly.
We are not really running a business - it doesn't matter to us if we don't achieve maximum occupancy or the highest possible rental because that's not what we are after. We own La Goupillère, which we bought for its land and we have invested in its renovation and fitting-out in the hope it can pay its way. The house deserves to "live" and by offering it as a holiday let we hope we can achieve our own objectives and give others the pleasure of staying in a part of France we thoroughly enjoy ourselves.
What this means to you, should you decide to book, is that we will do all we can to make your stay comfortable and memorable. We've tried to fit out La Goupillère as if it were our own home and we'd like you to feel it's your home for the time you spend there; a very comfortable home from home. We think we have succeeded, judging by the feedback we have had from our guests, the comments they have written in our own guest book and their public reviews posted on the Owners Direct and Home Away websites, the ancestors of VRBO and of course here.

What makes this property unique
La Goupillère is beside a quiet country lane half way between two small villages, 3 km from each. The nearest main road (between the towns of Mayenne and Le Mans is 3km away) so it is very quiet with clean air, no aircraft or industrial noise and no pollution. It is farming country and those are pretty much the only sounds you will hear, apart from the many birds and animals who live here.
The extensive grounds are very secluded and bordered by mature trees, hedgerows and large "hangars" which you are free to use as you wish, for parking or outdoor enjoyment if it's wet. Beyond the grounds there are only arable fields all around, no other roads or habitation within sight or sound. Very little traffic passes by, usually only the occasional local or farm vehicle and there are no neighbours, except us, 250 metres down the lane, and a reclusive but charming retired couple in the other direction. You will not be disappointed if you are looking for privacy and tranquillity!
The house is large, bright and airy, comfortable and very well appointed. We try to have available everything, except food and drink, our guests could possibly need to enjoy their stay…. but then we do provide a “welcome pack” that will see you through the first night so technically all you have to do is turn up and you’re ready to go!
