Solar Egas Moniz Charming House & Local Experiences is a manor house from 1890, located in Paço de Sousa (Penafiel), region of vinho verde and just 30 minutes from the city of Porto or 45 minutes from the Douro. This manor has got 10 double rooms and has been restored, maintaining its original characteristics, in order to preserve history, endowing it with modernity and comfort. Maximum capacity 20 people.

On the ground floor of the historic house, guests can enjoy the library located in the first room of the house. Here you will also find a corner with a work table waiting for you. Sofas, bookcases and a salamander, as well as the use of the old "loveseats" of the house, ask that you sit here a little. In this area furniture with local products brings a certain charm, we want you to take a little of our region with you to offer or simply remember.

In continuity, you will find the enoteca, where you can use the wines you will find here, highlighting the region's green wines, but also a sample of other regions of the country. You can use them (honesty bar), with the prices properly presented. This is also a beautiful living room with a sofa and TV. For colder days this space and the dining room share a fireplace, and we will add wood to be able to enjoy this unique moment that is the sound of the fireplace crackling. The kitchen is right next door, at your disposal and equipped with all the utensils to prepare beautiful meals.

The outdoor swimming pool is open from May to October and we will provide you with umbrellas, sun loungers and towels. The children's park will cheer up the little ones, so that they can be outside, with their feet on the grass or relaxing on a blanket, while the little ones play. Children will also enjoy seeing the cats that stroll around here. The friendly Mel is very affable and likes to come and play with the children.

On the top floor of the house you will find the rooms, all properly equipped, with air conditioning and with an extremely careful and thoughtful decoration. There are 6 double rooms in the historic wing of Solar and 4 double rooms in a new built wing. The rooms are located on the 1st floor.

Nearby, and within walking distance, you will find grocery, bakery and cafes.

Portuguese history is also evident in the geographical area where the Manor is located, namely in the route and discovery of the “Rota do Românico”, starting point for a journey full of culture and heritage.

Iva was by far the best hostess I've ever had through VRBO or any rental anywhere. She was amazingly receptive to all of our endless questions about the property, location, directions, activities, etc. My family continued to ask questions throughout our stay, and Iva never tired of us! She and Natalia cooked us a gorgeous meal, with an amazing charcuterie board and chocolate mousse cake. Every morning she delivered fresh rolls and other pastries. We could not have had a better experience with Iva. Highly recommend.

Awesome place for a family of 12 adults.

We took our five adult children with their spouses to Lisbon and Porto. This is a magical place. Iva made our stay fantastic. It is hard to find a place to house 12 people. It is out of the city, but worth the drive. The big take away was the huge kitchen. After our stay in Lisbon, we remembered how small kitchens are in Europe. This place had a huge, well stocked kitchen. It also had a large washer and dryer which was appreciated since this was our second stop on our tour. For anyone wanting quiet and not the noise of the city, We would recommend this place.

Best VRBO stay yet

A group of 10 friends stayed at this gem of a place and we all loved it! From the start communication with Iva, the host, was very pleasant and detailed and helpful. The actual house was perfect, clean, comfortable and unbelievably well stocked. Iva thought of everything. Not only did we have fresh bread every morning but she had the kitchen stocked with coffee and other food stuff for us to eat. She gave us a wonderful welcome and is a ray of sunshine and a font of information. She and Natalia also arranged a wonderful meal for our group one night and made reservations for us another. I can’t recommend this place enough! I’m hoping I get to return someday!

Family reunion

This was the most amazing space for our family reunion of 13 people! The property is stunning with SO much room for people to stay. We had 7 of the 10 rooms but essentially had an entire boutique hotel to ourselves for 6 days. Iva was amazing- so easy to communicate with and very accommodating and accessible. I have never seen a place be so well stocked with everything you could need. She even provided some groceries and beverages for us so we could have our first breakfast there. Fresh rolls and pastries delivered daily - scrumptious! I cannot express how fantastic this place is- felt like home away from home. I feel like I could reach out to Iva at anytime- she was SO lovely.

Wonderful week at this beautiful house

We have just left Solar Egas Moniz after a wonderful week staying at this beautiful house. Thirteen of us from Australia visited to celebrate my wife's birthday. We had the best time! Iva and Natalia were awesome hosts. Iva made me feel welcome from the moment I made my booking. She was in regular communication with me before we arrived to make sure that the rooms were properly set up and everything was ready for our arrival. Iva also helped me to organise tours and dinners for our group. The house is very large, light filled and spacious, with several separate upstairs bedrooms, each with its own aircon sand bathroom. Upstairs is reachable by stairs or a lift. Downstairs, there is a lovely lounge area, a big dining room, large and well equipped kitchen and laundry. In the grounds outside there is a swimming pool, sun lounges and (in a separate space) a wood fired oven that we used to make pizzas. The house is only 30 minutes drive out of Porto or 5 minutes to the railway station. We chose it because it gave good access to Porto and to the Douro valley for a range of excursions. Natalia and Iva also cooked dinner for us on our first and last nights at the house. The food was lovely and the meals were a wonderful way to start and finish our time at the house. I can't say enough good things about our stay. The house was brilliant and Iva was the best host. have a lot of experience booking shared holidays. The stay at Solar Egas Moniz was the best I’ve had.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful

Where to start? First the Manor House. It is big! Old on the exterior but modern in the interior (without losing the traditional elements). Big bedrooms, everything we needed, sparkling clean! Even a nice modern elevator provided (especially useful for luggage) Lots of living space downstairs. We had the whole house for our group and there was plenty of room to be together or be apart. Everything had been thought about and provided. (We also loved and used the pool!) Second, and most important, is Iva and her team (who look after the house). They are the NICEST people, nothing is too much trouble. Iva booked taxis for us, recommended local restaurants & trips and catered my birthday dinner for 20 people (delicious food). She even rented a keyboard for us for the event. The meal was outstanding and the whole evening was filled with joy and celebration. Third, location. We split our time between Porto and more local activities. It is very easy (and inexpensive) to get to Porto - Sao Bento on the train from Cête. 30 minutes on the train. It takes about 20 mins to walk from the station to the house (some people liked to walk) but we had also rented some cars and there is lots of free parking on the south side of the station - it took about 3 mins to drive. Next time we will spend more time in the local area - there is so much to do locally! We had a truly wonderful week at Solar Egas Moniz and strongly recommend.
