The Domesday Book of 1086 records the village's existence, but it was most likely founded as an Anglo-saxon settlement in the sixth century. Although the once-impressive Folkingham Castle no longer stands in the village, its site can still be seen today. The village now features a convenience store where guests can pick up food and other supplies for their own cooking, as well as a pub called The New Inn.
