About this property

World famous house in the beautiful Scottish Borders

Experience an unique opportunity to stay in one of the most famous historical houses in the world: the home of one of the most famous celebrities of the Nineteenth Century, Sir Walter Scott. Perfectly situated in the beautiful Scottish Borders, Abbotsford’s Hope Scott Wing offers luxury group accommodation.

The Hope Scott Wing is a later extension to Sir Walter Scott’s A-listed 'Conundrum' Castle, built in the 1850s to provide generations of his descendants with a secluded retreat. It has been sensitively renovated to offer 8 beautifully appointed double bedrooms. Furnished with paintings and furniture from the Scott family collection, it retains the warm and welcoming feel of a family home. The Hope Scott Wing is a special place; perfect for bringing together family and friends to escape, relax and celebrate.

Our experienced staff will be delighted to help curate a bespoke itinerary that makes your stay truly unforgettable. A range of unique experiences can be arranged including catering, guided fishing days, clay pigeon shooting, private Gin tastings, exclusive guided tours of Scott's historic rooms and hot tub hire.

With seven luxury bedrooms, and an adjoining additional eighth bedroom, the accommodation is ideal for families, groups of friends or colleagues celebrating a special occasion, or those simply looking to escape from daily life in beautiful surroundings. Bedrooms include the Hope Scott Master with a grand four-poster bed, a deluxe fully accessible suite with commanding views to the river Tweed and five other luxurious double or twin rooms all individually decorated and named after family members or prominent visitors to Abbotsford. One bedroom also offers an adjoining queen-size room – perfect for a young family or close friends.

The elegant public rooms provide the perfect place to both celebrate and relax. You can enjoy a peaceful afternoon with a favourite book in the library or a cosy evening in front of the open fire in the sitting room. The large bespoke kitchen comes fully equipped and the formal dining room, with spectacular views of the river Tweed, is the perfect location for a memorable dinner. Outside you can unwind in the privacy of the courtyard garden, explore the woodland and riverside paths of the Abbotsford estate and enjoy exclusive afterhours access to Scott’s formal gardens.

Guests should note that from March to December Abbotsford is a visitor attraction with Scott's historic rooms open to the public to view where he lived and worked. The wider estate and woodland walks are also open for the public to enjoy. There is very little intrusion on the guest accommodation and once closed for the day guests have exclusive access to the formal gardens.

Guests enjoy complimentary admission to the historic rooms and our folklore themed trail, Witch Corner. Guests are also entitled to a 10% discount in our onsite cafe and shop.

Business Retreat at Abbotsford!
Our business group (and spouses) enjoyed a marvelous retreat at the Hope Scott Wing at Abbotsford. We'd seen the general pictures of Abbotsford, which are stunning. But, we were particularly and pleasantly surprised to find our VRBO accommodations at the Hope Scott Wing to be excellent! The house is both comfortable and impressive. And, Donald and Diane (our contacts at Abbotsford) were extremely helpful in setting up this visit, including great suggestions as to things to do in the area, catering, etc. Some of our group took the opportunity to fish on the River Tweed, which looked fun (I wasn't one of the fishermen). If anything - our visit was too short! Would love to come back sometime.
