About this property
Mount Coggill, A Delightful, Contemporary Country House In South East Ireland
The house, downstairs, has a large open plan living and dining area with kitchen and two double bedrooms (one with double bed, one with 2 single beds)which share a central bathroom with shower, bath and w.c. The main sitting area has a large wood burning stove and the other sitting area looks out onto the lawns, pond, and the Castlecomer hills in the distance. The dining area is an almost perfect oriel window up to nearly 30 feet high looking South East to Brandon Hill. The first floor comprises a small library area, a further sitting area and two good sized double bedrooms(both with double beds) with walk-in wardrobes. There is a bathroom on this floor with w.c., wash basin and wet room with 2 showers.
Yet another, smaller floor, which is accessed via a spiral staircase, is ideal to relax in with a drink and enjoy the beautiful views of Mount Leinster, the Blackstairs Mountains and on a clear day, the Wicklow Mountains. It is a private house which is vacated for letting. The owners have a self-contained flat at the end of the house. The kitchen is well equipped with cooker, dishwasher, microwave. There is T.V., DVD. C.D.player, internet and laundry facilities. There is a barbecue neatly built into one of the dry stone walls near the patio. Because of certain design features, the house is not suitable for children under 8 - open plan stair case and a pond outside.
Over Christmas - December 24th to January 2nd, minimum booking is for 3 nights mimimum. The owners live in the flat at the end of the house during rental times.
In Winter, heating costs are extra. As the main living space is large and open plan, oil heating costs can come in between €30 and €45 per day depending on how hot people want the house to be. The house is usually between 19 and 22 degrees. €4 per day for electricity is allowed for in the rental cost. Usage above this amount is charged at 38 cents per unit. Wood for the stove is €15 per load as required. If the stove is kept going efficiently (we would show you) it can keep the ambient temperature up.

About the host
Hosted by Felicia Hulme-Beaman

Mount Coggill was rebuilt in 1999-2002 by two musicians. The main barn building was intended as a performance space. We lived in it for 3 years before we ‘interfered’ with it as it is such a beautiful building. And so the upstairs, which was one big performance space, is now divided into two good sized double bedrooms and a further floor or mezzanine is above these two rooms. It still leaves a spacious balcony area to sit and relax. We were very careful to carry out our alterations to blend into the existing building. Helen Dillon helped us to develop the garden. She advised us to create the patio and decking area outside the kitchen to bring the house more out to the garden. She was very keen not to change too much and to keep the wildness of the surrounding grassed areas and flower beds. At the very end of the house is a large room which was built by the previous owners as a recording studio. This we have made into a separate, self-contained dwelling for ourselves and so we are on hand for any queries or help that may be required. Mount Coggill is situated on the Kilkenny Carlow boarder and quite close to Wicklow. All these counties are renowned for scenery, river and hill walks, their art and crafts with world famous festivals in many fields. We enjoy all of these amenities and we can offer information to those staying at Mount Coggill.
Why they chose this property
Mount Coggill is a very unusual and beautiful house. It is included in Grand Designs (Trade Secrets section). It is a house where people just want to sit and relax and enjoy the beauty of the house and the surrounding scenery. Nearby are the picturesque small towns of Graiguenamanagh and Borris with the beautiful River Barrow. The historic Borris House is the seat of the descendants of the Kings of Leinster. Also in Borris is the award winning restaurant and hotel - The Step House. Mount Coggill is convenient for New Ross, Kilkenny, Carlow, Thomastown, Inistioge and many other local places of interest.
What makes this property unique
The house is a most relaxing space to be in. It lends itself, particularly, to groups of people as there are 5 areas in which people can sit together or sit alone to read or listen to music and yet still be in company. It is a very secluded and private house, off the beaten track. But within 30 minutes, you can be in Kilkenny City with its medieval buildings, National Craft Gallery, theatre, cinema, and a choice of good restaurants. Carlow Town with its Saturday Farmers Market, New Ross and the Dunbrody Famine Ship, JFK Homestead and Arboretum and Ros Tapestries and the Hook Peninsula with sandy beaches for swimming.
