About this property

The Captains - Nautical themed traditional crofters cottage

A cosy two bedroom cottage for up to four guests in Bettyhill on the beautiful North Coast of Scotland. Located right on the popular NC500 tourist route, the cottage offers a view of the spectacular scenery and empty beaches right from the front door and is in an ideal central location along the north coast to explore right out to Durness in the west and John O'Groats in the east. Get away from it all, enjoy the scenery, the wildlife and gentle pace of life.
The space
This traditional Scottish crofters cottage overlooks the beautiful River Naver, Torrisdale Beach and the sea. Known as The Captains, the stone cottage combines all the benefits of modern specifications with a charming nautical, seaside theme. It has a well-equipped fitted kitchen, shower room, double bedroom, twin bedroom, off road parking and hillside garden, and is complete with TV, DVD player, games, Wi-Fi and EV charger.
Guest access
The cottage sits on the A836 road, making up part of the NC500, so is easy to find and access at the end of a long journey. There is off-road parking with EV charger, and easy, level access to the front door. At the south end of the cottage there is a small lawn which is an ideal location for watching the wildlife over in the river or a good place for a morning cup of coffee or a picnic on a sunny day. Behind the cottage is a steep hillside garden, accessed by steps at either end of the cottage, which guests are welcome to enjoy. The property is fenced so it is clear where it ends.

Pleasant stay

I enjoyed staying there. It's in a quiet area just as you leave the village. No problems at all.

Lovely little cottage

Cottage was perfect when we approached and went through the door , we moved the wicker basket to use it as a coffee table as it had glass on top of it , underneath there was lots of dead beasties , dread to think what the bottom of the basket was like , I swept them up and carried on , to realise we could not lock the door from the inside so had to leave it unlocked , apart from that it’s a lovely little place for a night or 2

About the host

The Captains has been a family owned cottage since 1983 and I first visited it in 1994. In that time, it has been used as the base for Geological Fieldtrips and family holidays and has been an important backdrop for creating happy family memories and healthy childhood experiences. In 2023 I took on the task of fully renovating it in order to put new life back into it and bring it up to a standard suitable for sharing with visitors.
With 30 years of experience of holidaying in this beautiful location, I want to share my love for this remote and beautiful area where it is possible to get away from it all and while away time without guilt or the feeling of there being anything pressing that needs doing.

Why they chose this property

To fully appreciate this area, it is necessary to slow down. It is all too easy to whizz along the coast road, attempting bumpy photography of the sea views from the window, in a rush to tick off the next location but that is to not do it justice. Even from the cottage doorway you can enjoy watching wildlife feeding in the estuary, osprey hunting, the ebb and flow of the tides, and the ever changing sky delighting with new shapes and colours.
Within walking distance and easy driving distance there are a whole host of beautiful beaches to explore, river walks, woodland trails, and history to discover. Enjoy having the beach to yourself, of finding secluded spots at the bottom of rugged tracks and living in the moment.

What makes this property unique

There is a certain kind of charm about The Captains which captures hearts. Being instantly recognisable and distinctive, even to fleeting passing traffic, it well-known in the area for its fishing floats and buoys, collected over many years of beach-cleaning walks. As a guest, you have the privilege of accessing inside where you will see that the seaside charm continues throughout, with nautical themed décor and delightful details to discover in every room. It will be hard to forgot this cottage once you have stayed here.
