Heron House on Westcott Bay – Waterfront living near Roche Harbor

Welcome to picturesque Westcott Bay, a quiet retreat, 5 minutes walk from Roche Harbor Resort, shopping and all marina facilities. Heron House is a dog friendly vacation rental newly constructed in October of 2017…3 minutes walk to Roche Harbor’s dog park. Fly in, boat in, or drive in, you’re never more than 5 minutes walk to the Heron House.

What to do on Westcott Bay? Well, you could walk 50 feet out your back door to the beach, or stroll, on all but the highest tides, to Picnic Island. Use the two fishing kayaks to paddle around the bay, troll a line, or set a crab trap. On the weekend, paddle over to the Westcott Bay Shellfish farm for their famous barbequed oysters. Maybe you’d like to hike the nationally recognized trails … all without having to get in your car! If it’s a stroll you have in mind, walk the 3 mile loop past the sculpture gardens (off leash for dogs), through Roche Harbor Resort itself, stopping briefly at Westcott Bay Cider for a tasting, catch a rare Pokémon at the lighthouse mailbox opposite the old quarry 9 swimming hole, and … you’re back home.

If drive you must, head over to Lime Kiln Point for some orca watching, tide pooling, or having a picnic lunch. You could drive 9 miles into the big city of Friday Harbor for all the amenities of a small town.

Roche Harbor Resort provides the opportunity to book a whale watching trip, join a kayak tour around the north end of Henry Island, or, if you’re lucky…schedule a wedding 

The Heron House is named for the great blue herons that daily stalk the shallows or perch on Picnic Island. Bring your camera for some close up shots of them or the bald eagles that fish in Westcott Bay.

Our family had a wonderful stay at the Heron House. The view and location were amazing--it was so relaxing to sit on the balcony and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. There was abundant room for our party of 6, and all the rooms were beautifully decorated and cared for. The kitchen was beautiful and had everything we needed to cook. If we come back to San Juan Island we would love to stay longer.

This is an incredible house and just a short walk to Roche Harbor. The property is located right on Westcott Bay. With everything you could want or need to enjoy the water. If we weren’t busy everyday with a family wedding and their activities we would have been able to utilize the kayaks, clamming gear and crab pot. We would definitely go back and stay in this house but would stay much longer.

This was the perfect place to get together for these elderly siblings and their dog. Beautiful and comfortable home where we could spread out but still be together.It was very peaceful and quiet and we could easily drive to places of interest.

Wonderful house! Beautiful view and property, so fun to explore the little cove and peninsula. Saw an otter playing out on the beach. Great set-up for our trip with grandparents, parents, and two little kids (5 and 2).

Our stay at Heron House was amazing, from the beautiful views from inside the house to the views from the outside decks. The house was clean and the bedroom set up worked perfectly for our group. We loved the ability to walk to Roche Harbor as parking can be a challenge. The ping pong table was a plus since we had some rainy days and the clamming gear was a fun way to get outside in nature, we were actually able to dig enough clams to make a delicious pasta dinner. The living and dining room furniture is uncomfortable. Thanks again and I hope we are able to stay here again sometime in the future.

Heron House exceeded our expectations. The view and location were spectacular, and we saw harbor seals from the deck every day. The private beach right outside the house is perfect for launching kayaks, although unfortunately we didn’t take advantage of that on this trip.The layout was perfect for our group of three couples, with everyone having their own space and bathroom. The large kitchen and dining area made it easy to cook and spend time together, and the kitchen was very well stocked with dishes, utensils, and everything we needed. The beds were comfortable, with plenty of extra blankets.We experienced a power outage for a few hours on our first night, but Dave and Sue contacted us immediately, and we found battery-powered lanterns in a drawer. We ended up playing games by lantern light, which made the trip even more memorable.The ping pong table was a huge hit, and being able to plug in our hybrid vehicle was a nice bonus. Wi-fi wasn’t fast, but not a big deal.This was our first family trip with our two adult children and their partners, and we’re already planning to make it an annual tradition. Dave and Sue were wonderful, communicative hosts. We highly recommend Heron House for a comfortable stay with spectacular views.

We had our annual girls weekend and the place was perfect! The view was absolutely beautiful and it was in walking distance of so many places! We walked to the Sculptures, Roche Harbor, did some hiking and had a wonderful time. We were able to eat in with the fantastic kitchen, play games, etc. The only thing I would recommend is maybe having an outdoor heater so we could hang out on the deck later! They had everything else you could think of from Kayaks, Paddle boards, Ping Pong, etc. The hosts had prompt communication and the place was just perfect!

It’s easy to talk about how beautiful this home is as well as how fantastic the location is. My wife and I have stayed here four times, and it truly is a beautiful setting. What gets lost is how fantastic the hosts Dave and Sue are. Communication is very easy, and both Dave and Sue are great to work and visit with. No matter how beautiful a place is, if the experience with the host is poor, more than likely you’re not coming back. There are multiple reasons that we keep booking this home, and Dave and Sue are a big part of that! We look forward to making our 5th reservation!

We purchased the property in 2015 and began construction June of 2016. We worked through the winter finishing the interior of the house with Sue doing the tile work, stone work and painting. Dave mostly drank beer and watched golf matches :-p We completed the finishing work in October and are proud to offer the house as a brand new residence.

Why they chose this property

This property was irresistible to us mostly because of the beach, the island, and access to the ocean for water activities. We hope you will use the two kayaks and the paddle board to explore Westcott Bay and maybe catch a few dungeness crab in the process. This is the second house we have built together and had so much fun on the first one, that we decided to do it all over again.

Beautiful sunrises, abundant wildlife and magnificent views across and down the length of Westcott Bay. Walking distance (3 min to Roche Harbor's dog park and 5 minutes to Roche Harbor Marina. Also, immediate access to a nationally recognized trail system. Don't miss the view from the top of Mount Young.
