Kasteli of Emporio – Santorini

The Kasteli of Emporio is located in the village of Emporio in Santorini, in the southern part of the island, and is one of the best-preserved medieval fortified settlements in Santorini. It was mainly built during the period of Venetian rule (13th–16th century) and functioned as a defensive settlement to protect residents from pirates and raids.

Architecture and Layout

Kasteli is essentially a small fortified, labyrinth-like village. The houses are built very close to one another, forming an outer “wall” that functioned as a protective fortification.

Key features include:

Narrow, labyrinthine alleys that could confuse invaders

Vaulted passageways and arches

Small inner courtyards

White houses with traditional Cycladic architecture

Viewpoints overlooking the village and surrounding plains

At the top of the settlement stands the Tower of Nimporio (also known as Goulas), an old defensive tower that was used as a lookout point and refuge.

The Surrounding Neighborhood

Emporio is one of the largest traditional villages in Santorini, and around the Kasteli stretches a quiet neighborhood with a strong local character.

What you will see around the Kasteli:

Traditional houses and courtyards with bougainvillea

Small churches and bell towers scattered throughout the village

Narrow streets with old cafés and local shops

A sense of authentic local life, away from the island’s most touristy areas

A short distance away lies Perissa Beach, famous for its black volcanic sand, while to the north of the village rises the Kasteli of Pyrgos in the village of Pyrgos Kallistis, another historic fortified complex.

✨ Atmosphere:
The area has a special charm — walking through the Kasteli feels like entering a small medieval labyrinth. The afternoons are very peaceful, and the sunlight falling on the white houses creates a truly authentic Cycladic scene.

I’m in love with this island! After 15 years here, I now feel like a local, as if I were born in this place with its magical energy.

I never get tired of admiring the unique landscapes created by the volcanic land meeting the deep blue sea. Every time you are in this place, there is always something new to discover and explore.

Year after year, living here, I kept discovering something different through new activities. Diving, sailing, viticulture, beekeeping, vegetable gardening, hiking, ceramics, photography. Through these experiences, I discovered again and again the unique beauty of Santorini, which I now share through my involvement in hospitality.

Today, I have the opportunity to add even more magic to my life by meeting new people, learning about the places they come from, and sharing my own knowledge about what I love in this place and what I truly enjoy here.

My greatest reward? A positive message full of enthusiasm or the smile of a new friend who enjoyed their stay and appreciated my recommendations.

Winter is my opportunity to recharge my batteries. I travel around the world enjoying hospitality, food, experiences, and excursions, while learning from other hosts and tourism professionals along the way. ✨
