About this property
Escape to an Idyllic Countryside Couple's Retreat
The Cartshed is the very essence of countryside escapes, set in the heart of Devon, just 20 minutes from the A38 yet surrounded by 100 acres of rolling organic pasture, ancient orchards, meandering streams, and peaceful woodland. A thousand years of history echo through this land, but it was in 2021 that the old farm cart shed was lovingly transformed into the inviting retreat it is today.
Here at Your Devon Escape we are on hand to assist with any queries or questions.
This countryside retreat offers a lot to explore on the doorstep. There are several local walks to enjoy from the property (don’t forget your wellies). Or if you want to explore further afield, head up to Dartmoor National Park or onto the South West Coast Path.
The local pub is just a couple of miles away in Harbertonford, where you can also find a convenience shop and local fuel garage. The towns of Dartmouth and Salcombe are a twenty-minute drive away. These beautiful coastal towns are the perfect day out; indulge on local seafood and wander the cobbled streets.
Nearby beaches, Slapton Sands and Blackpool Sands, are nine- and ten-mile drive respectively. Much-loved by locals and visitors alike with lifeguards during the summer months and a selection of amenities, they are perfect for a trip to the seaside.
The farm itself is over a thousand years old. At dusk and dawn, keep an eye out for deer in the steep fields and barn owls that occasionally nest in the cider barn. During the summer months, buzzards’ nest in the valley and dozens of swallows that swoop through fields before having a good natter on the telegraph line (we counted sixty-seven on the line last year!)
Originally, The Cartshed was where the horse-drawn carts and machinery were stored. Opposite is the cider barn, which was used to house a very large apple crusher and press to make cider and stable the farm horses. If you’re here in autumn, you’re welcome to help yourself to the apples and blackberries that fall from the trees!
The entire property.
Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, celebrating an anniversary, or simply seeking space to unwind, The Cartshed offers the perfect rural haven. This thoughtfully restored barn sleeps up to four guests (with a maximum of one child) and offers peace, privacy, and a deep connection with nature.
Inside, the open plan layout creates a light and welcoming atmosphere. Sink into the comfy sofas, cook up local produce in the well-equipped kitchen (note: portable oven, no microwave), and enjoy slow meals in the cosy dining area. In cooler months, the wood-burning stove becomes the heart of the space, perfect for snuggling up with a good book and a glass of something warming. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow you to gaze across the valley, soaking in the quiet beauty of your surroundings.
Upstairs on the mezzanine level is the bright and airy bedroom with a comfortable double bed and views down to the living area and out across the countryside beyond. A sofa bed is also available if needed, just let the owners know when booking.
Step through the French doors into your private enclosed garden, where mornings begin with coffee as the cows wander past and evenings wind down with birdsong from the nearby woods. The natural pond beside the property is fed by a woodland stream and attracts herons, ducks, and the occasional kingfisher, a gentle reminder of the wild beauty that surrounds you.
For those seeking truly restorative countryside escapes, The Cartshed is a place where time slows down, wildlife takes centre stage, and your daily cares melt away. Just bring your walking boots, your favourite people, and a sense of calm.
Please note: children must be supervised at all times near the pond.
Parking:
Private parking for one car.
Please Note:
The Farm has an abundance of natural wildlife, which is what makes this countryside retreat so special. The owners’ birds Kath & Kim the peahens, Rex the chicken (sadly, we lost Camilla to Mr Fox), and Effy the black Pollie dog are all very friendly and will like to say hello, but the owners will do their best to minimise their visits. There are also two new additions to the family, Muffin and Sheeba the rescue cats, both are very shy and like to stay in the farmhouse. The animals are not allowed in The Cartshed to avoid any issues with guests with pet allergies.
