🌅 History & Setting
The Barn, which sits adjacent to the Log Cabin, has a storied past. Built in 1857 as part of a working farm, it played an essential role in the local community for generations, supplying milk and meat to County Durham and beyond.
In 2007, we (Paul & Claire) became its proud ownders. Over the years, we restored and modernised The Barn while keeping its historic essence alive. In 2023, we built the Log Cabin—sourced directly from Finland and handcrafted on-site—adding a new chapter to the estate’s rich legacy.
You’ll notice special touches throughout the property, like:
A dry-stone wall built from historic Seaham sea defence stone
Granite plaque & wrought iron gates marking the estate entrance
Stone turret with cross & knight inspired by Durham Cathedral
Highland cow emblems made of pebbles and local art
Wild pond with ducks, geese, and a resident pheasant
📍 Location & Local Attractions
Situated just 15 minutes from Durham City, our cabin offers the perfect balance of peaceful seclusion and easy access to local attractions:
Durham Cathedral & Castle – a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Durham’s museums, restaurants, and historic streets
Local walking & cycling routes from the doorstep
Oakenshaw Nature Reserve (a 45-minute circular walk with 3 lakes and birdlife)
Family-friendly play park just down the road
Whether you’re after cultural sightseeing, outdoor adventures, or quiet countryside strolls, there’s something here for everyone.

About the host
Hosted by Claire Glendenning

We’re a small family who built The Log Cabin as a retreat—an escape from busy days and a way to reconnect with what really matters: quiet mornings, good coffee, and time spent in nature. Every detail in the cabin was thoughtfully chosen with comfort and charm in mind, blending rustic simplicity with modern essentials. What started as our peaceful getaway slowly grew into something we wanted to share. We love welcoming guests who are looking for the same kind of rest, wonder, and togetherness that this place has given us. Whether you’re coming for a romantic weekend, a family adventure, or just a deep breath in the trees—we’re honoured to be part of your story.
Why they chose this property
We chose this area because it offered exactly what we were looking for—peace, beauty, and a true connection to nature without being too far from the comforts of town. The woods here have a quiet magic to them: the way the light filters through the trees, the stillness in the mornings, the sound of owls at night. It felt like the perfect place to slow down and really breathe. We wanted a spot where we could escape the noise, let our kids run wild, and make real memories. The bonus? Friendly locals, charming small towns nearby, and year-round outdoor fun—hiking, cycling, and cozy winters by the fire.
What makes this property unique
What makes The Log Cabin unique is its personality. This isn’t just a holiday rental it’s a handcrafted space with heart and history, built with natural materials and filled with thoughtful touches that make it feel like home. The cozy mezzanine, wood-burning stove, and peaceful porch all invite you to slow down and enjoy the moment. Surrounded by woods, but still close to local facilities, it’s the perfect mix of seclusion and convenience. Guests often tell us it feels like stepping into a storybook a place where memories are made, and time slows down just enough to catch your breath.
