About this property
Wheatsheaf Barn Retreat
Forget all your preconceptions about Essex!!!! This part of Essex, the Tendring peninsular, is ancient rolling farmland, with the added bonus of easy access to river and sea. It is very quiet, and has an air of remoteness, which belies its proximity to London, an hour and a quarter away. The climate is generally dry and bright, with wide open skies and the special light quality which has made it a favourite for painters from Constable onwards. Wheatsheaf Barn is situated in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the site of Special Scientific Interest.
The house is, and feels, very spacious (c 3,500 square feet) with plenty of room for friends and family to be together in the large open plan downstairs room or separate on the balcony (with its view towards the river and wonderful sunsets) or in the downstairs bay. It can sleep eight comfortably, with a useful downstairs bedroom and shower room, and further sofabeds available for shorter term use. The kitchen is well equipped and easy for several people to cook together and the dining table accommodates up to twelve.

About the host
Hosted by Host

The Barn was built in 1715 as a typical threshing barn with two large cart doors that also helped to blow the chaff from the wheat. In 2010/11 the barn and the cart lodge were incorporated to make one modern dwelling and the structure was carefully restored by the current owners, (well, Tony, really), using as much as possible of the original building and keeping the large scale of the barn; there are partially retained double height roof voids, making for wonderful light and airy spaces with the original exposed old roof beams in the bedrooms and the construction wooden “knees” still bearing their oak bark. In the build we used modern environmentally thoughtful technologies, such as ground source for the underfloor heating, and recovered rain water for the toilets. The styling is contemporary and kept deliberately simple and uncluttered.
