The town is full of character with many buildings of architectural interest, including its magnificent parish church of St Mary’s. Thriving independent grocery stores sit alongside a popular zero waste shop, gift shops and two butchers with a strong local food ethic. The weekly Tuesday market and monthly farmers' market (first Saturday of the month) provide local produce, coffee and crafts. Visitors will enjoy exploring the ancient “jitties” and courtyards of the Puzzle Gardens up above the Market Square, leading to the Star Disc with fantastic views high above the town. Visit the Heritage Centre and the delightful surrounding countryside, including nearby Carsington Water, Black Rocks and the High Peak Trail. Rock climbing and cycling can be enjoyed here at every level, and there is fantastic walking all around. Well Dressing is unique to Derbyshire, and Wirksworth combines this tradition with a lively carnival in May. There is also an annual Arts festival in September with an amazing Art & Architecture Trail, showcasing contemporary art and international performers of every kind. The award winning Le Mistral Bistro along with a range of pubs – do not miss micro pub The Feather Star – a range of cafes and takeaways and an independent cinema are all within walking distance. The town offers a leisure centre with a climbing wall and a small trainer swimming pool, The Eco Centre, The National Stone Centre and the Mount Cook Adventure Centre.
