Town: This small, historic market town lies within the Vale of York between the City and the Hambleton Hills, on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Picturesque and peaceful, it is a perfect introduction to Herriot Country. The town's centre boasts a large market square surrounded by splendid Georgian buildings. There are pretty village greens with flowers and seats, and a good selection of shops, pubs and cafes. There is also an excellent community centre with a newly built fitness suite. Close by are many picturesque, well-kept villages and quiet lanes making it ideal for cycling. York, Ripon, Harrogate and Knaresborough and Yorkshire’s old famous abbey sites are all within easy reach. The Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors and Coast are also within easy touring distance.
