Agüimes offers several leisure alternatives to its visitors, whether strolling through its historic quarter, its green areas and natural landscapes, or taking part in the various cultural activities that take place throughout the year.
One of the most interesting visits for tourists is the Parish Church of San Sebastián, a stone building with a certain cathedral style and a façade that represents one of the best examples of Canarian neo-classical architecture. It was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1981.
In the Plaza de San Antón is the Agüimes Interpretation Centre, which allows the visitor to interpret the architectural, artistic and historical characteristics of the historic quarter; typologies of the different buildings that exist or existed in it, such as peasant houses, bourgeoisie houses, artisan workshops, chapels, churches, convents, archaeological sites...
If you want to visit the natural surroundings of the municipality, there are two places where it is essential to go: Temisas and Guayadeque, a beautiful landscape declared a Representative Canary Island Farmhouse by the Government of the Canary Islands. Here we can contemplate an extraordinary landscape of mountains, the Roque Aguayro and the most important olive grove in the Canary Islands, where the 18th century San Miguel Chapel is located.
Guayadeque is a deep ravine that divides the island. It is home to the interesting troglodyte settlement of Cueva Bermeja, the chapel of San Bartolomé Apóstol, as well as several cosy restaurants carved into the rock of the mountain itself. It also offers one of the most beautiful almond blossom routes on the island, which can be enjoyed in January and February. The Guayadeque Ravine, classified as a Natural Monument and an Asset of Cultural Interest, has an Interpretation Centre located in a building excavated from its slopes. Here you can take a journey from the most remote past, when erosion and volcanic activity formed this landscape, to its current use, including the aboriginal occupation and subsequent colonisation.
The Montaña de Agüimes is another of the most attractive places for visitors, as it preserves archaeological remains where you can still see cave art and aboriginal dwelling caves. The most outstanding site is Morro del Cuervo, where there is a unique group of petroglyphs.
The Balos petroglyphs, located in the ravine of the same name, also stand out as one of the most important engravings in the Canary Islands.
Among the beaches of this coastal municipality are: Playa de Vargas, ideal for windsurfing, Playa de Arinaga, about 2km long and very popular, and Playa del Cabrón, with one of the most biologically and ecologically rich seabeds in the Canary Islands archipelago.
