Lge 1800's Home, much charm, open floor plan-expansive glass with ocean view
About Paula Aschettino
We purchased this beautiful home in Maine after seeing the views and loving older new England style homes. Capt. Proctor, the former owner, was a Navy man and merchant marine and owned this home for many years with his wife Daisy. Capt. Proctor was well known in the area and many of his belongings and writings are located in the Gates House on Rt 92 Machiasport. We have 5 acres of land and 300 ft of oceanfront. I, Paula, grew up in Wayland MA and have always enjoyed oceanfront property with our family owning a home in Eastham MA on Cape Cod Bay. Some of my relatives came from Etna Maine and being a Marston, I feel there is a connection to this area. In our back yard at the Capt. House is a grave of a 10 yr. old girl, Emma Ida Kinghorn, who passed from this life in the 1800's. We deeply care for the wonderful people an this peninsula and the past inhabitants. Michael is from Rochester NY, a sales engineer and now retired. He has a great love of the sea and interest in sailing and building small boats. I am a former Registered Nurse, Real Estate Broker, and artist. We are happy to share our home with others and know they too appreciate the beauty of nature, non commercialism of this special area and respect to both animal and neighbor.

The property is very private and picturesque. Having morning coffee or evening cocktails on the deck was the best!
We love our new 400 sq ft deck also. The ocean views and sun rise are spectacular-
Thanks for visiting- we would love to have you return.
What a wonderful week we had at the Captain's House! Walks along the gravel road, watching the tide rolling in, and walking the beach area were some of my favorite times there. The locals were some of the sweetest people I have met. One gave us a tour of the old school house that is just a few steps away from the house.
Thank you Paula for letting us enjoy your property.
Great place in Down East
Had a wonderful time in Starboard. There is an outdoor shower that was great during a cool morning/evening. Nice and quiet property with amenities close enough to keep you in vacation mode without having to go without "needs".
Thanks for staying at our beautiful oceanfront home- we love to share the 180 degree view of the ocean from our new large deck and hope you enjoyed the beachfront. Come again.
This was the best place to stay, beautiful setting, wonderful accommodations, everything you could want at your fingertips. Did NOT want to come home.
Can't wait to go back
We just returned from our stay and my family is already planning a return trip with even more family members. The house is a lovely old house with plenty of character and room to spread out. The kitchen is very well equipped. There is a closet of games enough to keep everyone busy.
I have never been quite this far up the coast. The area is very quiet and relaxing but there is so much to do as well. My husband spent several days on Gardner Lake locked in epic battles with the fish (the fish won). We kayaked down from the Gates House in Machiasport to the house twice. It was a fun trip although I wouldn't recommend it to inexperienced kayakers. Just past Buck's Harbor, the water does get more challenging. The coastline is beautiful with rocky ledges and crashing waves. Hopefully next time, we will be able to explore some more of the bay. My son wants to kayak over to inspect the fish farm.
The beach in front of the house was great with some beautiful rock formations with purple and white stripes. My kids enjoyed the beach area especially the area heading over to Starboard Island when the tide is low. We saw seals in front of the house as well as when we were kayaking. We also saw two bald eagles, osprey and my nephew saw three moose when he went to pick up our clams. We hiked the Bold Coast trail and drove to Campobello. Check out the obervation area near FAA station. You can look out over Jasper Beach and beyond.
My family has been vacationing in Brooklin, Maine for many decades. Everyone was a little skeptical about coming further north but now we are a family of converts. The area really is like Maine was 50 years ago (okay 47 years ago when I first came).
There are beautiful trails and hikes in Downeast Maine. Many acres have be saved and are natures finest! Wildlife in the Mooshorn National Park is all about! Black bears, deer, moose and bird watching. This is only 10-12 miles north from Machias.
Lobster boats work the waters off the shore and you can buy lobsters from the lobstermen. It is wonderful to go explore the coastline from Beals Island, Jonesboro and Jonesport, Rogues Bluff which has a wonderful state park. No crowds, life as it was years ago! There are grocery stores 12 mi. away in Machias, a general Hospital, the University of Maine Machias has programs in the Summer. There is a great swim club and fitness center in Machias. Area towns hold many cultural activities and music programs all Summer long.
