About this property
Huntsham Court by Group Retreats
Experience the grandeur and charm of the award-winning Huntsham Court, a luxury Devon wedding and country house venue rich in centuries-old history. This sprawling estate has stood the test of time, with its story dating back to 1760 when it was acquired by the Troyte family.
Today, the magnificent manor standing proudly is a testament to love and exacting architectural brilliance. Born from a romantic tale in 1868, the estate was transformed from a derelict Tudor mansion into an awe-inspiring Gothic revival masterpiece. The manor`s overhaul was commissioned by the Walrond family who deemed the original mansion unfit for their daughter, Katherine, who was to marry Charles Arthur William Troyte. The impressive redesign was orchestrated by renowned architect Benjamin Ferrey, a founding member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. This work of art, intended as a marital home, now fittingly serves as a backdrop for unforgettable weddings.
Huntsham Court also stands as a memorial to Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Leonard Acland Troyte who inherited the estate in 1896. A hero of the Great War, he was tragically killed during a civilian evacuation in 1918. Following his tragic loss, the estate passed hands to his brother, Gilbert, who later became an influential MP for Tiverton.
In recent decades, Huntsham Court has transitioned from a private estate and hotel into a premier venue. It has played host to a variety of prominent figures, from an undercover Russian spy named Oleg to rock `n` roll icon Liam Gallagher who chose this unique location for his 2013 `Shine a Light` music video. Perhaps most notably, the estate also served as a serene creative haven for author Douglas Adams as he penned the fourth installment of the legendary Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series. Experience Huntsham Court—where history, romance, and luxury intertwine.
