Down by the water in the beautiful Vågslid nature area, you’ll find this architect-designed dream of a cabin, 800 meters above sea level. With its simple, now weathered wooden facade and grass roof, it stands in striking contrast to the classic dark cabins nearby. Here, you can let yourself be embraced by the tranquility of the landscape and the intimate, inviting interior.
Inside the cabin, it’s easy to see that the hosts have an eye for detail—from vintage finds given new life to thoughtful design solutions like distinct social zones. At the dining table, you can enjoy long, cozy meals or creative projects, while the long bench by the windows or the sofa offers the chance to settle in with a good book—perhaps with your favorite music playing in the background from the hidden sound system in the living room. Upstairs, the loft and oak beams create the perfect setting for the kids to play.
The cabin has two bedrooms on each floor, and there is plenty of space for families or multiple generations to gather. At the same time, the cabin doesn’t feel so large that a couple or a family won’t also appreciate its intimacy. In the main house, the large windows create a fantastic flood of light and give you the feeling of being at one with nature. If you’re lucky, you might even spot hares and foxes outside the living room windows.
Outside, you can enjoy the sun on all sides of the cabin, from dawn until it sets behind the mountains in the evening. Lose yourself in the stunning views of Lake Vågslivatnet and the surrounding mountain landscape, and warm up by the fire pit in the twilight on a late evening.
All around you, the stunning landscape offers beautiful nature experiences, whether you choose summit hikes to, for example, Simleskjåen or Vesle Nup (1,510 m), or take the kids around Vågslidvatnet, to Hermodshola, or around Vasseventyret. If you’re looking for a truly special experience and don’t mind getting up early, Trolltunga, Dronningstien, and Via Ferrata Åkrafjorden Nature—with three alternative routes—are all within reach. You should expect a 1.5- to 2-hour drive each way to where the hike begins.
In winter, Haukelifjell Ski Center—with access to high-mountain trails for downhill skiing or snowboarding—is just a few minutes’ drive from the cabin. You can also choose to simply strap on your skis right at the cabin and spend much of the day exploring the excellent trail network that Vågslid has to offer. Your hosts also recommend Sæsnuten, which sits at an elevation of 1,392 meters above sea level.
